It's about to "go off" (as are nerds everywhere) as the first Nvidia Pascal cards, the GTX 1070 and 1080, are due to be announced in an hour in a live stream.

Let's hope they remember to put all the memory in them this time!!

So when can I buy a massively discounted card from a previous generation. My motherboard fried so I'm looking to upgrade everything fairly soonish.

Yeah I'm excited but tbh, with a 970, there's like a handful of games I can't shit on. I guess the Witcher full bore would be nice.

    1080 - 27th May - $599
    1070 - 10th June - $379

Allegedly the 1070 is faster than a Titan X, and the 1080 is about 20% faster than a Titan X.

Unfortunate naming if the 1080 can do 4K easily :p

I've sworn off first gen cards from a new process, been burnt in the past. The best cards I've had in terms of long livedness, noise, heat and performance have always been later revisions of a new nm process.

Helps that I'm happy to stick with 1440p for a while yet anyway for frame rate purposes, and I'm displaying rare patience when it comes to VR. Cancelled my Oculus order yonks ago (was June ship date), intend to sit out the first round, or at least till there's some actual games that truly interest me. As I've not yet experienced it, I don't know what I'm missing thankfully.

Having a freesync monitor doesnt tie me on to AMD, but obviously if I want to use the tech I will need to stay red.  I coud do with a bit of an upgrade at 3440x1440 though the 390 is coping ok at that res.  Who wants ok though?

Really need proper hands on with these new cards so the marketing fluff can be proven or debunked.

It's why I'll be sticking with 2560x1440, G-Sync and my 980 Ti for a while yet. It's a sweetspot that will hopefully last me till there's a healthy volume of v2 Pascal cards, and games that can take real advantage of them. I dabbled with 3440x1440, but performance went from extraordinary to merely decent, wasn't worth the trade off for me.

I'd take that with a massive pinch of salt. Nvidia have a habit of talking shit about how fast cards are.

My GTX 770 is still holding strong at this point, but I'll be watching this new set of cards to see how they develop over the coming year.

I guess if it is faster than a titan x, ironically that should temper early adopters; I mean if they're prepared to do that to customers who have laid out nearly a grand for a titan. Mind you, that's the game bleeding edge owners know they're playing when they get into it.

Anybody moronic enough to pay Titan prices for a graphics card deserve all the salty bitterness they get when cards as powerful are released at a fraction of the price further down the line.

I'll probably go for the 1070... Overkill for 1080p, but should last me bloody ages if it's anywhere near as powerful as they say it is.

I'll wait for the quiet versions from Msi and Asus and see how benchmarks are, I may upgrade my PC at the end of the year.

I thought this. I was happy with the 770 for all the usual big titles but I decided to chuck a 970 in over Christmas after my 770 fan went a bit weird.

Like most I studied the various benchmarks and graphs and came to the conclusion that there probably wasn't going to be much difference and I should wait for the next thing™. But honestly the difference from 770 to 970 was night and day.

DP1.4 is big, allows faster hz at higher resolutions such as 120hz at 4k so I'll be a happy upgrader

@graysonavich Interesting; I was wondering how much difference there was.

Think I'll still hold out, though... :)

I'm getting four for a quad sli. I'm going mod in a spoiler to each and paint on go faster stripes with tippex.

My processor is a 386 SX25. Do you think that'll be a bottleneck?

~I'm still happy with 1080p but I'm definitely looking to bring my rig up to XBOX One port ready.

I have the 980ti and I only play at 1080p so not much point un upgrading although it claims almost double the performance in VR, which is annoying.

When will gfx cards be good enough to output to four 4K VR headsets so we can play local MP Rainbow Road on a Gamecube 2 at face-melting levels of graphical fidelity?!?

Agreed. However, an early adopter would have still had 'the best graphics' for three years by now, right? Or am I getting my dates wrong? Paying to be ahead of the curve for three years sounds pretty good compared against early adopters in other areas, e.g. for smartphones.

Edit: I see it's only been about a year since the Titan X released. It was so crazy expensive I simply just forgot it existed for the good of my wallet. Yeah, a year isn't very long.

980ti will probably prove value for money all things considered. I don't think the titan brings much more to the table except ram.
