    That's the fourth region done. Last main mission there was pretty straightforward. Human bosses definitely seem easier than demon/monster ones.

    @Rajin if you think you're in it for the long haul, the DLC is essential IMO. Adds 2 new weapons, lots of new loot and some of the best missions and bosses in the game.

    The problem is it swells an already very long game, so only get it if you see yourself playing the thing for 50+hrs. Otherwise you may find yourself getting bored before you reach it, and it only unlocks once you finish the main game.

    I love the new content though. Hayabusa!

    Said I'd give a bash again this evening for an hour before I went out to dinner and fell in love again... Who'd have thought playing it in the middle of the night after a night on the town wouldn't end in tears...

    Made it to the boss room of the mission in region five I was having trouble with, and scored three of four items in a set, plus a new spear that's the most powerful weapon in my inventory (even before gaining experience with it).

    Just did the first main mission in the 5th region (the one with the burning village). Fuck me, that wasn't very much fun. Don't know whether it's because I've been away from the game for a few days, or because the mission's full of environmental hazards, but I found that really hard and really fiddly. Boss was a piece of cake, though, who I one-shotted without breaking a sweat.

    "Tricky missions, easy bosses" seems to be turning into a bit of a theme now.

    @GarlVinland

    Think I will buy them soon then, I have already finished the main game and 90% of the sub missions (including twilight mode).

    THis is driving me insane. How do you Do that thing where when an enemy attacks you, you can go behind them? No idea what it’s called so I can’t look it up. I did it in training once and never really felt a use for it until I came up to this spider cunt boss

    Quickstep?

    It’s not that, it’s a move where when they attack you use your sword to wipe away the attack and swing behind them, like a parry

    Dunno. Shouldn't be too hard to find if you can remember what weapon it was with, there's not a huge amount of moves and they've all got demo videos in the options.

    You should just use quickstep though.

    Water shadow. Oh this is embarrassing... I’ve only just found out that you can scroll further down in the ‘learn skills’ menu 😳

    @Decks yeh thank, I think quick step, or swift step works with dealing with this boss better

    That skill you're thinking of is a parry iirc, and they don't work on (most) bosses.

    Going to pick this up, is it worth me getting the dlc too ? I do like my souls type games but have about a hundred odd games to finish.

    Unless you're going with the complete edition I would hold off on the DLC. You can't play it until after you completed so you're looking at at least 60 hours.

    Well, the DLC does also add the Odachi and the Tonfa, if you want more weapons to fuck with.

    @Rivuzu And the Odachi has been an absolute game-changer for me.

    Oh so the tonfas are not in the base game? I bought the game with dlc. I use them now and again - will try the odachi too.

    If you're not using a single katana you're an uncouth savage quite frankly.

    Definitely. I use the Kusarigama as secondary, I use that to cheese a few bosses when I’m not getting anywhere - the high stance has a long reach 😉

    Odachi is my weapon of choice. Once you start soul matching later on, you can create some real heavy hitting weapons.

    Finished the region 5 main missions tonight (though still have a few sub-missions to wrap up before I move on). My enthusiasm for this is starting to wane now. The combat's ok, but it's too dependent on i-frames (a problem shared with Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3). More enemy variety is desperately needed. The area design is at best middling and in places bad.

    But I think I'm fairly near the end now, so will stick with it to the finish. There are some of the fundamentals of a really good game here and I'd love to see Team Ninja take another shot at it which adjusted for some of the weaknesses. But in terms of 2017 Soulslikes, I think I'd rank The Surge very marginally above this one.

    Maybe the last region (and the DLC) will change my mind.

    I've learned to accept that you're a tory voter but Surge better than Nioh? Surely euthanasia is the only way forward now.

    Just finished bloodborne, now onto the Nioh DLC.

    And I was firmly team katana, but found the whirlwindy thing with dual swords late in the game and it was a game changer.

    It didn't help that all the best drops were single blades. I actually started off with the axe but got jack shit dropped for me on the first couple of stages.

    @Decks Meh, it's a close run thing and I might just have been feeling a bit grumpy last night. Really didn't enjoy the Sekigahara region missions.

    I think Nioh and The Surge largely invert each others' strengths and weaknesses. The Surge is a bit on the small side and somewhat overly streamlined, but has some of the best world-layout design since the first Dark Souls and boss fights which really feel like major events. Nioh is a huge, generously-sized game with god-knows-how-many layers to its combat and equipment systems, but has poor area design and anticlimactic bosses.

    @Rogueywon

    I think innitially, the boss fights are great and relatively unique. The issue is that at one stage there are too many human bosses that feel stale after a while.

    Are the bosses of the dlc's of high quality btw?

    I've used a single katana on my PS4 playthrough, but now I just use an Odachi. I guess an axe would make sense as a second weapon, seeing how they are both strength-based? But maybe they're too similarly slow/heavy.
