This is the PS5. It's a standalone console and it's coming 2018. Usually they brief developers two years before launch.

This makes perfect sense. That's a normal console cycle. The appetite will be ripe for a new generation then. Especially due to the requirements of VR.
At least someone in here talks sense lol. Would explain why maybe there are so many remasters. As this gen is viewed as a stepping stone to next.

Nah mate, it'll be an addon device that connects to the PS Camera port and adds more cores and GPU teraflops to the PS4

    ...More DDR6 RAMS too

So we'll be going from a barely able 1080p to a barely able 4k.
But hopefully a very stable and capable PSVR experience!

They haven't made enough decent games for the PS4 to move on and release another console.

I'm up for ps5. Already most games released are gimped with dodgy frame rates.

Who actually has a 4K screen? There's no way this would happen this year, and I doubt the penetration would make it worth it next year either.

I love how people hate the idea of change, with every new advance.

I hope this comes to byte Sony on their arse. Okay I can sort of understand Microsoft doing it (it's still a terrible idea) because the One never fully recovered from its disastrous reveal, plus the fact that it isn't as powerful as PS4 but the Sony console is selling very well. I'd certainly quit console gaming for good and go exclusively PC, which is where I spend the vast majority of my gaming time anyway. The fuck are they thinking? Don't fuck with a good thing.

Admittedly it sounds like a very retarded business gamble when your biggest success in years is a striped down console. Maybe they are placing all their eggs in one basket, because Sony are so fucked?

This makes it sound like you aren't the person they need to aim to please anyway.

I do think though that the console makers are looking at the mobile phone market, with its yearly iterations, and that that is a highly false comparison to be making. The mobile phone business only works because the mass market goes on contracts, instead of fronting up hundreds for the hardware.

OK,  let's say this new rumour is true and that the earlier rumours of the Xbox One getting some kind of upgrade are also correct.

What are the chances that both Sony and Microsoft decided to go down this route at the exact same time?

Is there some type of collusion going on?

Espionage maybe. I think it would be naive to think Microsoft and Sony don't have a fair idea what the other is doing at all times, via third party developers. Sony kept its 8 gig of ram secret by telling devs it was 4, and obviously there's little danger of anyone learning Nintendo's secret plans.

Surely it would need a massive power boost to be able to offer a stable 4k experience at all. Unless you're prepared to play at 10fps!

It's the whole fragmenting the market thing that makes me think this is bullshit though. 30 odd million PS4 owners will be made to feel redundant and left behind and what developer is going to spend all of that extra time/money making their game 4k for the comparitively tiny portion of PS4 owners that would have this new hardware and/or a 4k TV to play it on.

Nintendo have done this for decades with their handhelds. I don't see why consoles are such sacred cows or think their owners will have such glass jaws.

@Dirtbox I was thinking more about the extra optimisation effort required on the part of the developer to get the game running at 4k while also maintaining a stable and playable framerate etc.

Got no doubt they're working on their next consoles now. A new PS4 at the end of year with a VR 'boost'? There's no fucking way. Also isn't Kotaku utter shit?

A current PS4 couldn't do 4k under any circumstance as it's HDMI 1.4. It would need at least 2.0 to hit a resolution beyond 1080p.
Actually both the X1 and PS4 are perfectly capable of outputting a 4K signal. They just don't have HDCP 2.2 or HDMI 2.0 that's all.

HDMI 2.0 is not a requirement for 4K in the general sense, just 4K as the current standards go. However it would be limited to 30hz.

But yeah there is no way a new PS4 would be able to do 4K gaming @ 60fps considering its barely available on PC as it is. Yes the new GPU's coming this year might change that somewhat but even so.

I can see both Sony and MS bringing out an updated console that includes HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.2 for 4K video though, thats certainly a possibility at some point.

@beastmaster Slightly alarming that Sony haven't dismissed this out of hand. The should be reassuring all their PS4 owners not saying "We don't comment on rumours or speculation"

I wonder if it's just a minor revision, maybe to get a 4k dash or UHD Blu Ray support rather than a full fledged 4k gaming machine, which is very much impossible right now.

How would that utterly meaningless phrase be reassuring?...
Roger Sony would need to appear on TV and say " we're not making this thing, and oh yeah, Knack is coming to PS+ in April!!!" For me to feel at all reassured.

I'm a little annoyed that Sony haven't sent a representative round to my house to hold me and tell me everything is going to be OK.
