The other two threads are growing rapidly with all kinds of stuff, from game screenshots to controller discussions, so why not keep this one to talk about the specs.

    Fuck it ...

Let's just talk about the specs.

Ok UL 2T FLOPS what do you think feasible?

    Flops are bullshit. (imo)

A nice way to judge supercomputers but useless for realworld apps that depend on more than just raw processing power.

And I still haven't seen a cell ina ction on any reputable hardware magazine/site.

Judging fro the specs the ps3 and x360 will be remarkably similar in power, I think.

    256MB running at 3.2Ghz?!

    Fuckme, that's a bit fast!

Which is better? Interlaced or Progressive?

    I'm always forgetting.

As an aside, before a new console I need a new TV! :D

I was thinking that. it's a bit unbelievable, actually, unless rambus works through a different system.

What do you guys think of the difference of how the memory is used? Unified on the xbox and split on the ps3?

The unified one will give more freedom, I'd think. Giving the opportunity to use more ram for one or the other if needed.

More flexible, definitely, but also slower for the main memory (is it 700Mhz vs 3.2Ghz?).

That's the PS3s. 700mhz on the GPU and 3.2ghz on the CPU.

I still say there's something dodgy going on there. Pretty soon the tech sites will explain how this works, I'm waiting for that. :-)

Reads pretty much all types of CD-sized media. Time to hoist the Jolly Roger me hearty. Arr!

Seriously though, Sony as well as Microsoft are pratically encouraging piracy by supporting CD/DVD-Roms in the coming generation. I wonder if they do it on purpose...

Kinda the whole point of the thread summed up.
Sony are saying the CPU is capable of 2T FLOPS but in reality what is it capable of.
From what I can see of the specs it looks slightly knobbled by memory again. Ok it's got 512Mb RAM but it's distributed. I really think the 360 has the edge here ...

SEE! I'm not the only one who thinks something smells bad about the entire thing. There is something very manipulative and incomplete about the whole thing. Something...evasive.

I know what the smell is. The smell is the PS3 isn't nearly as far along as Sony wants people to think it is. So it's fluffing. It's manipulating. But it knows it can fix everything later, once reality manifests itself.

Tell you one odd thing though... at the 360 presentation they confirmed that both iPods AND the PSP will be compatible!

    Weird. :)

No, no. I was comparing the PS3's main memory clock speed (3.2Ghz) against the 360's (which I think is 700Mhz).

And Sony have also apparentl;y bought 100% exclusive rights to the next GTA game.

Didn't see that one coming. :)

Throw in some next gen. PC graphics card specs and things get even more confusing!

Ok hang let's not overstate things ... I do think something smells about the specs. The 2T FLOPS thing really does seem like theory. The memory architecture leads me to think it will be Emotion Engine all over again. Great CPU knobbled by RAM

Of course this is obvious, but something tells me the Xbox 360 is going to be infinitely easier to develop for.
