Would anybody here pick up The Division Gold Edition over any Mass Effect game? That's on sale on PSN in the Ubisoft flash sale. Gameplay-wise, doesn't it scratch quite a similar itch?

Andromeda will only get better over time. The Division is already as good as it'll get.

P.S. Did Division get PS4 Pro support?
    Over this ME game? Yes.

Over the other ME games? No.

Something happened to this game whilst it was still in development. Something bad.

Notice how much better the facial animation is on the human dude.

Maybe they decided to go with Ugly mod 2.50?

It looks like something happened in the game engine itself. Thats a shocking regression in appearance. Maybe the facial animations are just a symptom of a much larger problem in the engine itself.

I'm pulling all of this out of my arse of course, I know nothing about how these things work.

Lighting is totally different and much flatter. Textures noticeably worse everywhere. Additionally there's no longer any animation on the eyes and the mouth is less expressive at a few points.

The mouth being less expressive could potentially be deliberate as we've seen in some of the other weird clips they can definitely pull stupid mouth shapes. The big problem seems to be (and in other clips) that the eyes are totally dead and the mouth seems to be the only part of the face that animates.

Not an animator but do work with them and there's two ways you can go for facial animation really, you can either use blendshapes or "bones" in the face. Judging from what I've seen where I work, I'm wondering if they've gone with a bone based solution and had to cut the number of bones in the face for performance reasons and weren't able to update the animations to properly fit/affect the new structure. Might also explain weird pingu mouths in places, the mouth rig might have had a couple more bones.

Maybe they bit off more than they can chew. And now ea just wants it out the door before the end of the financial year to appease stockholders. Seems the most likely of all.

Maybe, and I'm also talking out of my arse...

They had all these wonderful assets, models and worlds build after years of labor, but then they found out that there was a massive flaw in the engine that would prevent its sale.

Then they tried to impose all those wonderful assets, models and world upon a new, updated engine... and all those wonderful assets, models and worlds suddenly seemed a bit naff.

With the incredible amount of work done however, it was too late to start over.

It's built in Frostbite. It's the same engine that all of EA uses, that Bioware had previously used for DAI.

I am also no expert, but maybe the awesomeness of Frostbite was too much for them to handle, so they dropped back to Unreal 3 and hoped no-one would notice.

Then that proved too much, so they went with vanilla Gamebryo in the end.

Jesus, the lighting during dialogue (Xbox One) is abysmal at times.

Also, zooming into planets is so tedious after the first few uses.

People look a bit shiny/plasticky in this, and they did in DA:I as well. Is that BioWare's art direction or does that have something to do with the Frostbite engine (haven't played any Frostbite games apart from DA:I I believe)?

I know, but there must have been some sort of intricacy they had not seen coming.

Oh my god, these glyph 'puzzles'. So clearly aimed to flesh the game out. Who thought they were a good idea!

So I got to play a little bit of this earlier and I actually found the combat to be rather good. What I experienced of the rest of the game was pretty mediocre at best though.

Just in case anyone hadn't seen this particular gem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMX-kn_9-3M

I'm in the minority here but I couldn't care a less about the facials look a bit shit.

I'm not a ME fan, but gave this a go today due to the trial with EA Access and loved it. I've just got the Tempest and explored a few planets, from what i've played, I will buy and hopefully enjoy just as much.

Heh, just like how she tries to flirt with the Scottish lady. Seems like "Sara Ryder can't flirt" is the new "Shepard can't dance" running gag. I like it.

It's the critique of the writing that damns it for me. I'd play an asskey game if it were a good read.

I don't know how you can look past the weird shit going on with the faces when (if it's anything like the last 3) the majority of dialogue exchanged is with the camera pointed squarely at the face. Couple that with the fucking terrible dialogue and VO's.

It's the pingu stuff, it's just too funny. There's no way i'd pay full price for it, but I am definitely going to play it one day.

I like the Salarian saying 'kill me now', that's pretty self aware- but I don't think the line was created knowing the game would ship in the state its in.

The animation is so jerky, you can see the transitions very clearly. The blinking is particularly awful, it looks like a twitch.

I'd love to hear what was going on behind the scenes. I highly doubt EA wanted to release it in this state. They would know the reception wasn't going to be great and the Bioware brand is going to be tainted by this.
