Itís just dawned on me that the Switch is getting actual third party support. Weíve known it for ages but Nintendo combining handheld and console is paying off, and it totally excuses the usual compromised of Nintendo ports.

Doom is a bit blurrier than PS4? But this ones portable. Rocket League has a few jaggies? But this ones portable. Unlike the past where it was ďwhy on Earth would I get this version instead of the better looking oneĒ thereís now a pretty damn good reason for consumers to get the Switch version of certain games.

Could be a real game changer (teehee)

Why am I tempted by doom on switch even though I have the PS4 version. I wouldn't even play it handheld that much I don't think. Mmm I need help.

Is LA Noire already out? Never played the original, but I like the idea of having a proper detective-style game on a handheld, wrapped up in some GTA-esque gameplay. Looked good on the gameplay vids, too.

Shame about Rime though, was waiting for the Switch version of that. Guess I'll pick it up cheap on the PS4 at some point.

Think the Switch is a great idea, but Mario games aside is there anything worth playing that isnt a rehash of an old game that can be picked up on another console for £5?

Splatoon! Also Stardew Valley and Rocket League are a price match to other console versions.

Some of those screenshots of rocket league in handheld look like a ps2 game. Great system but I think they should stick to what works and games that work best for the system.

This really can't be understated. I don't play RL for the shiny graphics but in hand held mode it looks dreadful. Horrendous pop in of textures at the start of every match and I have had some slowdown now as well.

In docked mode on a 43" LG 4K tv there is a marginal improvement but if you have played the ps4 version it is leagues apart in looks.

All in my opinion of course.

Plenty of people will double-dip for portability on things like RL and Doom, especially at £15.

It's not for me but i can see the appeal.

@PrivateFloyd the explanation from the dev is that they always knew that in general the game wouldn't be all that graphically demanding so they went absolutely all in on tons of ridiculous particle effects and alpha stuff just because they could. That kind of stuff doesn't scale down to switch hardware very well.

When we built Rocket League, we were targeting PS4 and PC and didn't make those tradeoffs which is why you see things like a transparent "cage" surrounding each map so you can read wall and ceiling bounces, and why each car has a huge particle spewing booster on the back. It's also why our vehicle physics simulation is pretty complex. I don't think we would have made any of those specific choices if we were targeting Switch hardware from the jump, but they do incur a performance cost now. It's come a long way already just to hit 60 FPS on Switch and there's hopefully still some decent headroom to improve now that we've hit our original goal (launch at 60 FPS in 3v3).
The good news is they're still looking to improve, so I'd expect they'll be looking to ramp it up resolution wise in the future.

It must be the crazy effects - SARPBC on PS3 looks much better after all, on weaker hardware.

I have never played RL before. I fired it up on my lunch break and played 2v2 against bots and didn't think it looked all that terrible. Sure, a bit of jagginess was obvious at the start of a match but barring that, things move so fast it genuinely didn't bother me.

Do things get worse in 3v3 online? Because if not, I'm fine with it.

I would imagine the dynamic res is stronger against AI since it's doing all their behaviour calculations on top of everything else. Resolution should be higher in online games.

Maybe it's just me but from the footage I've seen it doesn't look that bad in handheld mode. Performance wise it looks spot on which is surely the most important thing with this game.

Still on the fence about it. Not really played the PS4 version that much.

So I have now Played Rocket League for a couple of hours this morning both docked and undocked and having previously owned it on PS4

On the plus side it played, to me, identically and was a smooth experience where I was equally as shit as i always was.

Docked the graphics are a downgrade on PS4 obviously but nothing that stopped me enjoying the game. It helps that i never really get bogged down in achieving the highest graphical fidelity.

Undocked I was pleasantly surprised when I first started playing as was expecting a graphical disaster judging by some online comments however it was perfectly playable if a little low resolution. However later I played a different stadium 3 v 3 and this did look noticeably worse. Nothing that stopped me playing and enjoying it including at least 5 "this will be my last game.. oh go on one more"

I tried fiddling around with different settings - so tried tabletop with one joy-con - as fiddly and playable as other games that play that way - I am fine, my chubby fingered friends perhaps not. I was on my own but tried checking out split screen. Half a switch screen is of course tiny so not sure how much you could tell going on 3v3 would be. But have played Mario kart like that successfully. However to go split screen it would appear you have to have another user on your switch, even to play offline which seems annoying. To play online that user would need a linked Nintendo account.

Rocket league is the only game where when i am trying to stretch a jump for the ball i physically move myself and the controller like a kid playing games. I must look a prize idiot.

Here's hoping they continue support as promised and can boost graphical performance to match the enjoyable gameplay. Even if they don't I am a happy owner.

I just don't care about graphics all that much. Everything after the Amiga looks great to me. There's no way I'd sit down in front of my pc and play Rocket League but it's appealing on the Switch for some reason.

I'm waiting for those Black Friday deals, hoping for a killer Switch offer. That said, as much as I really want one, Mrs F_P will not be impressed if I drop £300+ on a new console when we're due to complete on our house purchase within the next 3-4 weeks.

She was on board with the idea of buying it for our boys for Christmas, but has now gone cool on the idea :(

Not that I need one, but I'm keen to play the Nintendo exclusives, as well as Skyrim, Stardew Valley and Rime etc. And maybe Doom, although I'll probably buy it on the PS4 first to see how much I like it...

    @Flying_Pig

How about making the super bold move of selling the ps4 and getting a Switch in its place? Certainly a compromise but arguably a sensible, if nerve wracking move for some people.

Played a fair bit this afternoon and think it's fine handheld. Maybe it's a generational thing but looking at it from the perspective of it being handheld and being able to devote time to it without hogging any other screen anywhere, I think it's fab. I've seen much much worse, put it that way.

I'm certainly not sure about the comments I've seen elsewhere about it being PS2 era at times. There's some rose tinted views about the quality of ps2 graphics in that case. :)

Maybe it's from viewing handheld res videos on big tablet / pc screens? I dunno.

I havenít seen Rocket League on Switch, but i remember the GBA era when itíd get its own version of console games, and just having those games on a handheld was amazing enough. I remember being blown away by Doom and Mario Kart on a handheld.

I don't see any big price drops until after xmas. There's a lot of money to be made given the boatloads of Switches that should be shifted this xmas.

I'm now convinced it's a viable platform, maybe not shifting ps4 or Wii numbers but I think it's going to be ok and worth owning over the long term. Hardly a day goes by without new indie games being announced. Today's Switch indie game is The End Is Nigh, coming in December.
