@Syrette Yeah, the main story probably is about that length if you *just* did the main story. But, as others have said, that's nigh-on impossible in this game!

I probably should have completed the real estate/cabaret mini games before finishing the main story but never mind, still enjoying them post story.

What I found most difficult combat-wise is enemies with firearms - I find them a real pain, am rubbish at avoiding the shots.

If there's one thing I'm sure of now it's that all stealth missions in games should involve buying pornography for children.

Doing the Cabaret Club section fully before proceeding at the moment.

I have never before enjoyed entertaining Japanese business men this much.

Also, completely forgot Kiwami is this summer. Real excited for that, as my jumping on point was Yakuza 3 and never played the first!

Is there a difficulty spike hidden in this game? Either it's in my head or all of a sudden the random encounters in chapter 2 went from being piss easy to nails overnight. I seem to be immediately surrounded and then have the shit kicked out of me every time :( any good crowd control tips?

Still loving it though to the point I don't really know what I'm gonna do if I want more of the same when it's over. Am I right in thinking a remake of the first one is coming out...?
I have heard that there is a certain book or item that massively increases the difficulty if you have it equipped. I don't know what it is, but maybe try unequipping the things you have on?

Wait a minute. That rings a bell. I'm pretty sure I equipped a book/item of some sort which I thought was boosting stats, and yeah that was more or less when the difficulty spiked.

Something was up because I'm on the next chapter now, obviously with a different character and no equipment and the game is back to being easy. /shrug

By the way, sort of on that topic, I'm not really bothering yet with shopping around for gear, anything I've been equipping has been stuff I've found or had given to me. Is that OK or should I be paying more attention to my equipment?

Not really. Equipment doesn't make that much of a difference. Having a few knives in the inventory is a good idea when you come across REALLY tough enemies so you can heat action gut stab them. Those and the Staminan XX's from Don Quixote (they replenish Heat and HP, like normal Staminans, but the Don Quixote XX ones do more of each).

Equipment is only really worth grabbing for things like the Enemy Finder and that.

No, it doesn't usually matter so much. But if it's the book I'm thinking of, it does make a difference!

EDIT: After some consultation, the book is called 'Charismatic Autobiography'. If you have that on you, unequip it!

There's a similar item for Majima, a photo that makes people really hate your guts.

Completed the storyline and 32% of the game in 51 hours, so much more to do and I'm sticking with it. Best game I've played in ages.

That's it! Yep, I can confirm this is true and it made the game difficult as fuck.

Well taking this at a natural pace (doing substories as I find them rather then seeking them all out immediately (I do tend to make doing all substories bar Amon ones one of my precompletion criteria) and just starting chapter 3 with Majima. One more annoyance to join the prefight/introductions Japanese text being missing making things feel a bit blander is the saves having 0 info, not even the chapter you are on... I do appreciate the localisations happening but it is definitely lacking some consistency with previous games on the little things like this.

Funny you mention this because this is something I feel is often lacking from games nowadays.

I know it's only a minor irritation but I'm sure more games used to tell you, say, your total playtime than they do now. The ability to see how long you've spent playing any game is something I really appreciate about the Wii U, which you can see from the activity log regardless of whether the game itself has this functionality. I like knowing how many hours I've poured into a game! Admittedly Yakuza does tell you this, just not as part of the save game data.

Quite like the recap every two chapters when it switches characters.

I beat Mr Shakedown for the first time just now! Made a cool 14m.

Great work. Shame about Mr. Shakedown is that by the time you can beat him the amount of money he holds is a pittance.

Well I was only on chapter 2, so 14m wasn't too shabby!

It wasn't too difficult with the Rush style. Wait for him to attack, dodge, punch him a couple of times, retreat, repeat. I assume he'll have a bigger life bar next time though.

Maybe I'm just not in the right frame of mind but chapter 1 was a bit heavy on dialogue and handholding. Let me explore dammit!

On the subject of Chapter 1 - that's some stunt they pull at the end. I mean most of the chapter is made up of tons of dialog with some easy mini fights thrown in. At the end of the chapter there is a massive fight, opponent after opponent. What's the deal with big guy holding the black chair? i got past him, but only by taking hits.
Even as a series veteran (played through 1-4 and half of 5) I always find those chair guys annoying in these games particularly early on where they are very difficult to get if you don't have heat or a good weapon (if which I don't think there was one for that chapter 1 guy)

Haha, the chair guys. The one later at the Tojo Headquarters I just kept throwing garden lamps at him, which doesn't sound like much but when you realise they're giant fucking pieces of stone, he soon felt it.

The opening chapter is very focused on setting things up, once you get past that it opens up. There are other parts to the game where you are restricted by what you can do but the story should have its hooks in you by then.

A word of warning to anyone who hasn't finished it: once you go past the point of no return in the final chapter you'll need the best part of a couple of hours to finish so if it's late at night, save where you are and leave it for when you've got plenty of time to do it.

That's a fair criticism; the opening bit of the game does tend to go on for quite a bit. It's worth powering through, though, since the main game let's you go at the game at your own pace.

As a Yakuza noob that loves GTA, the 1980s, all things Sega how would this fare?

There's a single copy of it left in town (no Nioh!) so tempted to bite, but did just get Sleeping Dogs in the sale and am enjoying the slightly shonky Arkham-style king fu. And karaoke...

Get it, you'll (almost certainly) love it.
