I would have said it was up to God - new Pope required, issue a recall on the current one.

Surely the Vatican could have arranged a little something in his cocoa to arrange a more traditional transition?

The top tweet if you search for Pope is from Frankie Boyle:

    -------------------

    Frankie Boyle ‏@frankieboyle

The Pope must have done something even the Church finds unacceptable. I'm guessing he's shagged an adult woman.

There's been reports of Peter Odemwingie arriving outside the Vatican demanding that a deal be made.

Yeah, heard that a couple of days back. It was coming from some seriously dodgy sources then though. I wonder if it has just done the gossip rounds and become news or if there's really something to it. This could be very, very interesting.

Yeah, same. And it's probably the former but then again it's such a leftfield rumour that you can't help but wonder.

What stops police from arresting members of the Church?

Not some silly, we will sort them out special handshake between governments and them?

Apparently he doesn't come out of this new documentary at all well authorising payments to keep abuse victims quiet amongst other things.

i wonder if David Icke is getting his CV ready. he's already performed his first miracle during the meat scandal when he amazed onlookers by curing a ham.

    From a Reuters article

After he resigns, Benedict will no longer be the sovereign monarch of the State of Vatican City, which is surrounded by Rome, but will retain Vatican citizenship and residency.

    LATERAN PACTS

That would continue to provide him immunity under the provisions of the Lateran Pacts while he is in the Vatican and even if he makes jaunts into Italy as a Vatican citizen.

The 1929 Lateran Pacts between Italy and the Holy See, which established Vatican City as a sovereign state, said Vatican City would be "invariably and in every event considered as neutral and inviolable territory".

Same as when the Pope visited the UK, some people wanted him arrested. As he was a Head of State he had diplomatic immunity

Vatican City is classed as the smallest country in the world. Well with the Pact the way it is currently that's the legal view point

couldn't resist. probably how the Pope feels about now...

Bishop O'Neill: So Father, do you ever have any doubts? Is your faith ever tested? Any trouble you've been having with beliefs or anything like that?
Father Dougal: Well you know the way God made us, and he's looking down at us from heaven?
    Bishop O'Neill: Yeah...
Father Dougal: And then his son came down and saved everyone and all that?
    Bishop O'Neill: Uh huh...
Father Dougal: And when we die, we're all going to go to heaven?
Bishop O'Neill: Yes. What about it?
Father Dougal: Well that's the part I have trouble with!

So he might resign for any number of reasons but you would sincerely prefer that circa 5,000 choirboys have been buggered by the guy just because you disagree with an institution that he was the figurehead of?

A bizarre stance if ever I heard one.

i'm not one to get in the way of a good dustup but i do like to contradict myself so here goes...

i've got to say the way i see Deckard's comment is that he'd be happy for the allegation that the Pope, head of an organisation long dogged with accusations of expoitation of minors, is himself proven as an abuser and subsequently exposed as such rather then simply that the Pope is surreptitiously a child molester.

am i the only one who sees it that way? or do i see the best in people because i've been told that down at the high security prison where i teach rapists the only way to really love others is to love themselves.
