If you consider them a company, country or business, again, 4chan.

Seriously, I reckon 4chan actually is the Catholic Church in disguise.

Hell yes the Catholic Church is a business!

I just don't see what everyone gets so riled up about, and I'm not Catholic and I don't particular agree with the Catholic Church. I say let them do their thing and I'll do mine.

Well the problem stems from them trying to prevent you from doing your thing if your thing is something they aren't cool with this century. Such as being gay or, yes, unsodomised by a priest.

But surely they haven't actively tried to prevent it? Not that I'm aware of anyway, they just put out big speeches basically going 'IF YOU ARE A CATHOLIC YOU CANNOT BE X OR DO X'. I don't think they're doing much against non-Catholic homosexuality etc.

Of course, the problem comes with the missionaries that go out to convert people to be Catholic, then they don't know any better and when the Pope goes 'YOU MUST DO X OR BURN IN HELL' they oblige willingly, but that's not as prevalent as it was for obvious reasons. Still an issue though, and probably the biggest in the church, to be honest.

Again, not that this is a good thing, of course it's not, in the same way that a member's only club going 'NO FAGS' is a stupid fucking thing, but to say they're trying to 'prevent you from doing your thing' is a bit misleading.

Yeah, I could see from a gay's POV, or obviously someone who had been sodomised. Fortunately, I don't fall into either of those categories and I doubt 99% of the people who are so upset do either.

Not that there's anything wrong with that!

    @ meme

It probably goes deeper than them just saying you shouldn't be one thing or another. They probably go against gay rights and gay marriage and everything gay that they can get their hands on.

There was picture in the London Evening Standard today, where the Pope looked just like the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland.

I don't think they're doing much about gay rights, even speaking out about them, and even if they are, they hold little to no sway over legal matters in any major nation as far as I know. They're certainly not on a level as things like Fred Phelps and his (thankfully tiny) Westboro Baptist Church, picketing soldier's funerals with 'GOD HATES FAGS' signs. The vast majority of the Pope's (and by default the CC's) stuff is condemnation rather than activism.

The Catholic Church is hugely influential in many countries. As a religious organisation it is, by definition, in the business of making people behave in certain ways and think certain things. One of those things is that homosexual acts are an immoral crime against God and, through their schools, they like to teach children this little nugget. Some people might consider this a direct contribution to hatred of gays and somewhat worse than mentalists waving signs.

As for the thought that "if you're not gay or being bummed by a priest I dunno why you're riled"... some people manage to give a fuck about people who aren't themselves. Even if you just believe the Catholic Church does nothing but talk about their religious beliefs, they do so in order to try and persuade people of certain views -- why is it hard to understand being "riled" enough to oppose their rhetoric? They get to make their arguments but no-one should argue back?

Some people take Twitter far too seriously, the Pope is on it for five minutes and then jacks in his job.

Maybe he was coming round to Cardinal Martini levels of progressiveness, and the Vatican couldn't allow that.

You all know what this means right? We're going to have another "End of the World" year, as if 2012 wasn't bad enough. Pope Benny 16 is supposedly (if you believe interpretations of a prophecy from around 800 years ago) the penultimate Pope before the world ends.
