    Dead Island.

Had it for ages, never really got into it much, but for the sake of clearing some backlog loaded up my 30%odd save and knuckled down.

Suppose it's not that bad, but it's not that great either. The diabolical voice acting really stands out and the animation is, well, give me two weeks in a 3d engine and I can probably do better.
The weapons mods seem pretty cool but you don't really get enough varied weapons for you to make full use, I found myself pretty much using the same machete until late in the game where I swapped out for a better one. Down to luck to a degree, but when every weapon is inferior? Meh..
Also "infected", fuck those bastards. Great, yes, but fuck when you get 7 or 8 running at you at the same time. =-O
Last boss was a joke to, but that would be due to my super awesome shock katana.
    "Dance, zombie! Dance!"

Don't think I'll bother with riptide, gonna play through Ryder White and be done and move on.

Finished Resident Evil 5. Glad I stuck with it; turned out to be a great action game in the end, even if it was a bit hammy. (But that's Resident Evil, right?) Got the sixth one for NZ$30 recently so going to give that a try soon.

    Tomb Raider (Xbox 360)

I'm in two minds about this one. 90% of me loved it and found it thrilling and exciting but 10% of me hated the hand holding and the illusion that it was a big open island when it really wasn't.

Overall though I was really impressed and think with a few tweaks the next game could be absolutely superb.

    Negatives:

The first couple of hours hold your hand far too much and there's far too many QTE's. The puzzles in the tombs are ridiculously easy as well.

    Positives:

You really connect with Lara, she's actually very likeable and you feel the pain she goes through. The locations are also stunning and I never got tired of using the crossbow! I also never got tired of making a long jump and smashing my pick-axe into a cliff face!

    8.5/10

    Spec Ops: The Line

Really fun third person shooter that gives Gears Of War a run for its money.

It even shares one of the same flaws, with its sticky cover system. There are some graphical glitches which spoilt the otherwise highly polished sheen to it all, with enemies disappearing into walls now and then. But the biggest let down was the length of the game. I clocked it in a gnat's todger over five hours. If I'd paid full price for this, I would have been mightily unimpressed.

However, during those five hours, the gameplay is just quality, quality, quality. Some great set pieces, brilliant touches (I loved it when I took out a group of soldiers by lobbing a grenade, that took out a burnt out car to the side of them...releasing a wall of sand that buried them all. And I loved it because there was no icon telling me that was going to happen. I just discovered it through my own playstyle. I wasn't told how to play the game - the developers let me do what I want and discover a great moment like that for myself) and a great range of guns to use.

Definitely worth getting cheap for any fan of third person shooters.

    Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

    Brilliant.

Suppose it's because underneath it all was an amazing engine and superb game mechanics but what made it was the visual style, dialogue regularly had me in stitches, it's got lasers, zombies, dragons, cyborgs, a quad barreled explosive shotgun, stealth, action, jeeps, Michael Beihn!!, a neon bow.

Look. If you haven't played it. Play it.

And the soundtrack! Not only an excellent homage but excellent in it's own right.

    10/10

    More please.

I'll try Blood Dragon again, although I'm pissed that the "autosave",, after 30 minutes into the game, has me starting from the very beginning, including the heli gun turret scene and the annoying tutorial.

So far I couldn't come around to like it.

    Tomb Raider (PC)

    + Fantastic Visuals
    + Gorgeous Environment
+ Enjoyable Gameplay and Combat with great weapons
    + Stunning Cinematic Set Pieces

    - Predictable Story, crap characters (except Lara) and Dialogue
    - QTE
    - Utter shameless in the way that it copies Uncharted in every single way
    - Limited Exploration without shooty snooty
    - Some utterly cringeworthy Voice Acting

Despite the complete lack of originality and other issues I thoroughly enjoyed this, great fun, atmosphere, pacing and amazing to look at.

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit (360)

+ Oddball sense of humour, reminds me of Bangai-O
+ Looks gorgeous, lots of environmental variety
+ "Boss" fights are mostly fast and varied enough to not be too grindy (there are 101 of them)

    - Infuriating mini-games to end each boss fight. If you fail them, you lose health, are knocked back (possibly to your death) and the boss gets some health back. This dragged several fights out way longer than they should have been
    - Sometimes, the background makes it hard to see what's going on

So when I wasn't stuck waggling or mashing the controller in some stupid mini-game, I had a pretty good time.

Just finished The Walking Dead (TellTale)

    Simply epic

    + Character driven storytelling
    + Graphical style
+ Cutting off your own arm
    + Great open-ending
+ Player decisions carry through to each subsequent chapter

-Initial controls were a bit all over the place
    -made me feel sad

    9/10 - Cant wait for season 2!

Indeed, almost justifies another playthrough to see what would happen if I had done things differently. Probably will just before S2 comes out.

I didn't play without cutting off the arm, but clearly the last episode was designed around a two-armed protagonist. Everything he did looked silly and improbable without the arm.

Don't knock it till you try it, some of the things Lee managed to do with one arm would have been suspiciously difficult but the man was driven blindly to save Clem so managed to overcome obstacles

EDIT: think i read your post wrong but my answer still applies.

    Far Cry 3
    360
    Hours: 25
    Skill: Medium
% at completion at the moment: 70%

Loved it. I played and completed the awesome Blood Dragon (12/10! ;) ) just before, so this was very much a change of pace albeit familiar pace.

So much (too much ?) to do across the 3 islands/areas. I would do a couple of story missions and then climb towers and liberate encampments.
Then maybe collect flowers/'erbs of skin animals...you know the things I'm sure we all do in a our daily lives :)

I thought the story was fine, I mentioned in the FC thread about not liking certain parts, but overall it was good crazy fun.

I have played one co-op mission and thought it was really good, I understand the match-making is pants, so it might well be the only one I play, as for MP, I have read too many bad things, in fact I can't remember reading anything positive about that side of things, which is a shame, as the main game is brilliant.
    I'm going to score it
    9/10

I finished Far Cry 3 yesterday too (in preparation for playing Blood Dragon) and I absolutely loved it. Our experiences were very similar by the looks of it. I took the entire thing pretty slowly and even picked up quite a lot of the relics and letters.

I kind of wish they hadn't given free weapons so easily, at the midpoint of the game I had a pretty devastating arsenal and never really felt like money was an issue. I barely ever play any of the money making things as money was never scarce.

I really quite enjoyed the story, the mission where you burn down the marijuana fields was absolute class. I thought the story serviced the action and the more trippy elements blended well. I think they made some excellent stylistic choices, such as everything being told from the first person, rather than having third person cut scenes. I do wish they hadn't included QTEs towards the end but they also seem to be standard now with all games.

I could have done with the on-rails shooter bits too as I thought they didn't necessarily chime that well with how I played much of the rest of the game but you have to have a mounted gun section in an FPS, it's presumably some kind of developers law.

Probably my GOTY based on what I've played so far this year.

You are a factory of sadness.

    Deadly Premontion.

Had this for over a year before I got round to starting it, but I am so glad I did.

+ The characters and characterisation, especially York.
+ Excellent plot that kept me guessing; engrossing and engaging.
    + Superb music throughout.
+ Strong feeling of being an outsider and discovering a place for the first time.
+ Quite creepy when it wants to be.
+ A genuinely refreshing mash-up of survival horror and detective story.

    - Obviously the much-maligned controls, driving especially, weren't great but had no real impact on my enjoyment of the game.
    - Graphics a bit naff.

Gutted to have finished. Whether you end up loving or hating it, it is a game you must play, and, for me, one of the true unique gems of this gen.

Lego Lord of the Rings (Vita)

LotR is probably the best lego game so far. This however is not the best version of it. Once again it is a fairly shoddy port but I enjoyed it far more than Batman 2.

Quite fun if a little repetitve. It has a lot of charm and keeps the clever writing I've come to expect from Double Fine.

Think I actually enjoyed it more than the first one. The story wasn't as good but the combat was much better making it more fun to play.

    Thomas was Alone

Loved the narrative but grew bored of the game before it finished which is kind of damming given how short it is. Worth playing as it is a little oddity but not actually that great a game in my opinion.

3DS Professor Layton. Fantastic, I really do never get tired of these games. 9/10

Vita Everybody's Golf. It's taken me a year, but I finally beat the opponent that gives you the ending credits, so may as well call it completed.

Awesome game, and it says a lot that I reached this part before and lost my save but was happy to do it all again. Still lots of crowns to mop up, but I don't think I will manage them all.

I've just finished this myself and thought it was mostly excellent, I really enjoyed it!

    >I was surprised that a group of shapes could have such personality based purely on their distinctive abilities and individual primary colours!

    >I didn't think the game was long enough to have become bored of it, for me it was a perfect little slice of indie gaming that I didn't feel outstayed its welcome at all.

    >I thought most of the levels were cleverly designed around the unique abilities of each of the 'characters', playing to their individual strengths to work together in order to complete each level. However, I can't really say I found the game particularly challenging apart from the odd level here and there and the overall variety and look of the levels wasn't hugely different either.

    >I really liked the simplistic graphics and art style; the way each 'character' cast a shadow across the levels was a really nice touch!

    >The excellent ambient music playing in the background of each level was very relaxing and hugely added to the experience.
*As an aside, one thing I really like about the rise of the indie game in the last few years is the interconnected re-emergence of some truly brilliant and evocative game music compositions, like the one for TwA and also the tracks from games like FEZ and Hotline Miami. They really remind me of some of the truly superb work done in this field during the C64/Amiga era where so many tracks became so memorable and have, in some cases, transcended the games they were linked to.*

    >I enjoyed the narration by Danny Wallace.

    >Team Jump! :D

Overall then, I thought Thomas was Alone was a solid and enjoyable experience with some excellent music, but may have benefited from some slightly more difficult puzzles and a bit more variety in the level designs.

I'm giving it an old EG favourite: 8/10.

Nostalgia on DS. Wonderfully old school JRPG played over a very shrunken down world map of the planet Earth, you play as an adventurer based out of London and explore the world and its dungeons, many based on the wonders of the world , travelling in a heavy armed airship. Dungeon crawling aplenty and a lot of airship combat, all turn based. Great game, 44 hours playtime to completion.

    Tomb Raider on PS3.
Loved most of it, hated the QTEs, but they got a lot easier once you realised they were mostly the same patterns. Occasional frustrating gameplay more than made up for in the vast island given to you to explore.
    Brilliant acting.

    Psychonauts.

Tons of fun, very funny and lots of clever ideas. But some wonky controls and a last level than encampulates EVERY weakness of the game drags it down again. (Seriously, an escort mission with precision platforming? Fuck that).

Agreed. Throttling that guy with just one arm was epic and visceral, and overall the whole 'determined cripple' thing made the last episode much more emotional.
