    Killzone Shadowfall

    I can't quite make my mind up on this one. On one hand I enjoyed nearly all of my play through but on the other prescriptive and even a little repetive levels really let it down. There are also few sections where the objective is poorly explained.

    If you were being very charitable you could say the story was satire, but I think it's just shoddy, you end up hating both sides and everyone involved. It's hard to really get into a game when you don't really care what you are doing. There's a good story to be had in the killzone universe, this just isn't it.

    Having said all that, I did enjoy the shooting mechanics, it's a good blend of Killzone 2's weight and 3's accuracy. The guns feels meaty and powerful and the OWL was superb. The visuals too, woah man, they go long way to papering over the cracks. It never failed to wow, stopping at staring at the spectacle is part of a good launch game for me and it delivered in spades.

    Uncharted 3

    Whilst the formula is wearing very thin now, I actually preferred it to uncharted 2. The set pieces were better, as were the locations. It looks gorgeous too. Just a shame that the gameplay is so formulaic. The plot is ridiculous as well; and, again, fits the uncharted formula to a t.

    Really poor entry for PS Plus this month. The game seems unfinished and in need of a lot of polish.

    The shadow merge idea is kinda interesting but it never really does anything with it. It all comes down to making platforms to jump upon.

    The platforming itself feels very floaty and imprecise. The world itself is empty and doesn't reward exploration.

    The story is ok but the voice acting feels flat. Overall though, it's a fairly inoffensive game. I never hated it but as soon as I complete it, I deleted it from my system and will never go back to it again.

    The Stanley Parable

    Maybe.

    It's a wonderful game. Full of very dry humour and quite a lashing of pathos in places.

    Ghost Trick (iPad)

    The first iPad game that actually held my attention for more than a couple of hours (yes I know it's a DS game originally, but I never had a DS). The bite size puzzles, the animation, the goofy story - it pulls it all off in a way that seems effortless but is probably really hard to do!

    9/10

    Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon (360)

    This felt like FC3 revisited for the older, dare I say more discerning, player. A shorter campaign, a proper action hero, and enemies that glow in the dark for those of us whose eyesight isn't what it used to be... Oh and lots of in jokes for those of us who remember the golden age of cinema (and games).

    On the downside the blood dragons themselves were rather dull to fight, and like FC3 the campaign missions can be tedious when you're forced to fight waves of enemies. When you're in the open world it's great, just like FC3. I do miss that lovely jungle though.

    Splinter Cell (360 B/C)

    I played conviction a couple of weeks ago and its lack of Splinter Cell gameplay made me want to go back and play the originals.

    It has aged well and it still looks great (particularly the lighting and shadows) but character models are a bit blocky by modern standards.

    It is challenging and unforgiving but usually fair apart from a couple of difficulty spikes. The level design is varied and each section is its own little puzzle. Its very rewarding clearing areas without detection.

    I'd give it an 8/10 even by modern standards. The difficulty spikes and sometimes dodgey AI are the only things letting it down.

    Complete Rain there the other day. What a disappointment. I think that the game would have been twice as good if you'd been allowed to hunt for memories on your first play-through, as opposed to picking them up on chapter select later.

    That game is just so boring. So few rewarding puzzles, so slow, so uninteresting. I wasn't expecting all that much, but still... -_-

    Assassin's Creed 3

    A big step back for the series. Not as good as any of the previous games.

    The controls are still awful, with Connor randomly climbing anything he wants. It's buggy, with some awful screen tear on top. And when did the game completely give up on being about stealth assassinations? Ubisoft are so focussed on pointless padding (hunting, chasing feathers, the utterly pointless economy) that they seem to forget what the game was originally about.

    The pacing is awful too, with the game broken up into too many little bits between the cut scenes and wandering.

    And yet, there are some good moments. The Desmond sections are enjoyable, the odd Connor mission is good, and the combat seemed better than ever (I especially liked the various finishing moves, which had a good variety). And hats off to the writers for the final cinematic, which I thought was very clever religious commentary.

    So, a very good franchise let down with typical modern-day committee-based design flaws. Overall it wasn't a bad game, but looking back at EG's 9/10 review, I have to wonder what planet they are on sometimes.

    Just completed Silent Hill: Downpour on 360, before I head into Christmas playing a couple of new PS3 games. It's as flawed as the reviews made out tbh.

    +Good atmosphere on the whole
    +The story is alright, one of the better ones in the series
    +Nice mixture of free, open areas and linear, claustrophobic sections
    +The nightmare sections have some tense chases and interesting design

    -With the change of composer the iconic SH music and sound design has gone
    -Clunky controls
    -Poor graphics
    -UI/menu system is a mess
    -Atrocious frame rate drops
    -The checkpoint system and slow loading times cause frustrations, especially in the nightmare segments

    It's a shame because they had some good ideas in this and clearly put the effort in but I think the developer was lacking in talent and funds.

    @coomber Yeah, and having scratched your head at that 9/10, you then wonder if you should just discount anything that say about titles like AC4 - fearing more of the same.

    @Dombat I thought it was more an 8 myself. Weirdly I had no framerate drops. Likewise the music and sound I thought was ace.

    Not about to tell you what to like though! Shame you didn't enjoy it more. Yours matches the general consensus.

    Just finally finished Ni no Kuni. Magical. 50 hours, everyone level 70, all sidequests and bountyhunts done. Almost worth it alone for the song finally with lyrics at the end.

    It'll stay with me, like the Ghibli films. Enjoyed it immensely.

    2 weeks off for Chrimbo means it's attempted backlog clearing time!

    COD: Ghosts (PS4) - 7/10

    Predictable as usual, but still a solid campaign with some great set pieces and satisfying gunplay. Story is continuing in the absurd mould but it at least throws up some pretty interesting sections, and the dog is a novel addition. Disappointing though that the whole guerrilla army idea isn't realised whatsoever; you still go into battle tooled up better than the enemy. Looks decent on PS4 but a shame there's not more than improved visuals from the last gen versions.

    However the formula is very stale now and the restrictive vehicle sections don't really add anything to it. Time to mix it up and give the player more freedom in how they approach stuff rather than holding them by the hand from beginning to end. Then again I guess the MP is the main attraction and money maker so there's a lack of incentive.

    Grand Theft Auto V (360) - 9/10

    Quite how R* managed to create a world of this size that looks this good on 8 year old hardware I do not know, but it is an incredible technical achievement.

    The multiple character approach is a great innovation and it added more variety to proceedings, even if I didn't really notice what difference the stats/specialisms made. Main characters are kinda unlikeable (especially Trevor) and the story isn't great but the missions were largely entertaining, with some definite stand outs. The heists were great too.

    The whole range of content outside the main story missions is also very impressive, and I've only done a small amount of the extra stuff so will dip back in at some point. I hope the property stuff provides more than just the odd mission, though I suspect it may not.

    Brothers: a tale of two sons

    The level design was good and some of the puzzles were fun too. The story is quite simple but tragic. The characters felt a bit shallow which made it a bit difficult to really care for what was going on, but it was still fun. I got it in the steam sale, but I don't think id be that happy if had paid full price for it...

    Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow

    very much like the original, holds up well but the last couple of levels can become frustrating. In fact the last two levels probably account for 50% of my total playtime.

    The gameplay is pretty much unchanged but the production values, level design and level variety are much improved. The train level is brilliant!

    Fisher is still capable of missing a perfectly lined up headshot from near point blank range.

    8/10

    Thought Pandora was the better game overall, the first halve of chaos theory however, is better.

    I just did not like the second halve and completed it with difficulty back then on the xbox.

    I think the first halves of Splinter Cell and Pandora Tomorrow were better as well. Probably because the difficulty was about right and not too frustrating like the last couple of levels un both games.

    I've managed to track down a copy of the original Xbox version of Double Agent which no one ever seems to know or talk about.

    Bioshock 2 - Minerva's Den
    A very solid add on to Bioshock 2, interesting locations etc but nothing ground breaking. The story was fairly plodding, until right to the end - I certainly didn't see the twist coming, and it suddenly made everything fall into place.

    Certainly a high water mark in this gen DLC.

    ... the ending is genuinely stunning.

    The Thinker was no Andrew Ryan, but his motives are far more compelling.

    Nobody talks about Double agent for a good reason, it has many mechanics that don't work well, sneaking is usually frustating with a narrow path you are forced to follow(prison sequence for example)

    He's talking about the Xbox version, which from what I've heard is a completely different game to the 360/PS3 versions which were outsourced to a different Ubisoft team.

    I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on Xbox Double Agent, Rodney.  Particularly if you have played 360/PS3 Double Agent a lot, so you can tell us how it's different!

    Bioshock Infinite (360)

    Good game with an interesting story. Figured out most of what was happening before the end.

    Found the difficulty a little uneven and occasionally got caught on furniture / railings.

    Spluenky on the PS Vita

    I'm still not sure how. A bad start that transformed half way through when I bought a jet pack. I bought it for the XBox last year but made much better progress with the Vita version - it's perfect for on the go (and Christmas stuck at home).

    Brilliant game that I'll carry on playing (plus I only beat the normal game - there's a much harder way to complete it as well)

    Assassins Creed 4

    +Ships, Ships and more Ships
    +Massive world
    +Tons of gameplay
    +Looks fantastic even on the Wii U
    +Parkour gameplay still as competent as ever
    +Likable characters
    +More Pirates of the carribean the assassins creed
    +Neat little touches throughout the game
    +Side activities are pleasant

    -Story takes a while to develop
    -Parkour gameplay is still as annoying as ever
    -Sheer size of the world can be very overwhelming
    -Those annoying missions are still there
    -Definately some framerate issues on the Wii U

    This is without doubt one of the best games ive played this year, sitting right behind mario 3d world, its a massive return to form from last years version, which nearly put me off picking this up and that would have been a mistake. A game that never lets up, with a lengthy quest, an absolute massive amount of side quests and lastly, sailing the seas is brilliant and a joy in itself.

    Guacamelee (Vita)

    Very hard in places but enjoyable game. Plays very well and the biggest gymnastic workout my fingers have had for a very long time. Even though I found it difficult it was rarely frustrating. (Except one boss).
