3 is great. They all are up until 7.

I also (and I'm probably in the minority) thought series 1 & 2, possibly 3 as well, were a bit rubbish. I think the writing wasn't so great and they did look a bit low-budget and nasty. Series 4, 5 and 6 were utterly excellent though.

I don't agree that the writing was rubbish, it just changed. 1 and 2 had this odd couple thing going on, it was the Lister and Rimmer show, with Cat and Holly peripheral characters. And it was very funny watching these two idiots living in a tiny room together on a giant spaceship, just driving each other crazy. But that would have become boring after a while, and series 3 onwards had a larger budget, allowing them to expand its scope. Cat and Kryten became main characters had they had these great sci-fi plots, while still retaining the humour.

And personally I adore the low-budget look of it. It's very charming, and timeless compared to more modern effect-heavy sci-fi shows. Watch Babylon 5, for example, and its effects now look far worse compared to early RD. It's the uncanny valley thing, easier to suspend your disbelief for a wonky model on a string and sets made out of fish tank lids, than for a shiny CG animation.

They did remaster some of the stuff didn't they? Mostly exterior shots of Starbug/Blue Midget, maybe even Red Dwarf.

The series 7-8 stuff is CG due to the fact that the RD model was damaged in storage.

Hated the CG to be honest, it looked too clean and too clever.

Seasons 1-3 are the best IMHO. Kryten worked for one season but then became a parody of himself and I soon got bored with the endless "Space Corp directive" jokes. It started off as a sci-fi/comedy and ended up as a comedy/sci-fi if that makes sense.

Aah but the red alert bulb gag FTUW :)

Yeah, including some horrendus bits like sticking in CGI scutters and whatnot. Even George Lucas would have been ashamed.

Was there some drama behind the reason for Rob Grant leaving?

If by 'damaged in storage' you mean 'blown up for an effects shot' then yes, yes it was. :)

Ah, I just checked Wikipedia. They did all the CGI for the first three series so they could be more easily sold to other countries. They then used that CGI for series 7 and 8.

Nothing concrete was ever stated. Numerous rumours abound about it though.

    Tired of the partnership
Wanted to be known for things other than RD
    Creative differences

    Take your pick.

    There were two models
The one was blown up and the other damaged in storage.

    Great news...

Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules, Robert Llewellyn and Chloe Annett will appear in four 30-minute specials that will combine new material with classic footage of the cult BBC Two sitcom.

    Digital Spy

    ...it's a clip show! Can't possibly fail!

Chloe Annett is in it, which is awesome, because everything she touches turns to shit.

    That's Quarantine.

I watched that episode last night on UK Gold, first episode of Red Dwarf I've seen in at least 4 years.

    It's like a black hole

DNA is my favorite for the scene where Lister looks at the photo of what happened to Kryton when he saw a picture of a washing machine.

    'Is that normal?'

'what? taking pictures of it and showing your mates? no it isn't!'

Surely that's hinting that instead of old clips they'll be acting out classic moments.
