    Howdy.

I've got a thumping headache and bowels teetering on the edge of forcing lasts nights wine back up again, so you'll excuse me, wont you, if I have to leave the thread rather suddenly.

I remember, back in the rosey days of the Commodore 64 and long, oh so long, loading times and the Last Ninja and Creatures, there was a game called something or other.

It was a side scrolling space shoot 'em up game. I'm sure that it was called F-Zero, however Vroom! is adamant that it never came out on the C64 so I've bet $1million that it did.......did it?

I remember this game because everytime you completed a level, you had to load the next one. And if you died, you had to re-load level 1, which sucked.

I remember giving up on it and playing Captain Blood and/or Platoon instead.

    Anyone remember?

    Blimey!

Don't remember anything like that unless it was Zynaps. I don't remember that being multiload though.

    Nowt on 64.com

Sure it wasn't Trailblazer or another title.

    Oh, sidescroller.

Don't remember any with zero in the title.

F-Zero most certainly did not come out for the C64.

No idea what the game you're talking about is, though. You want to ask Retroid or someone more '64ish'. :-)

Wait... are you sure you're not thinking of R-Type?

    That's a bit like F-Zero namewise, is a side-scrolling shoot-em-up, and featured horrific multi-load on the 8-bits.

And the Speccy version was better than the C64 version.

    :-D

    Edit: Linky

    R-Type!

    Damnit, that was the one.

Writing about the old C64 makes me want to get it out (the commodore, that is) and start playing with it (the commodore :-D)

Anyone here get the joystick thingy?

Well lookie here mister Bravo Golf seems to owe me a tasty sum of One Million Euro. :o)

    F-Zero on the C64, tsk.
Anyhow, tough luck old buddy. I take all major credit cards and will be happy to take payment in the form of coffee.

Funny, had you mentioned the sidescroller thing I could have told you it was R-type. Multiload it was called. Remember it well. Afterburner was the first game to have the system I think. I could be wrong.

Blerk, you're right the speccy version was way better.
Twas only in GamesTM last month I think.

There's a cool 128k hack with the multi-load taken out as well. 'tis the only way to play 8-bit R-Type in style. :-)

Good luck with your new-found millionaire status!

Did you know the 64 was the first home machine to have 8-way scrolling in a game?

Best home version of R-Type in my book anyway is the speccy one.
Best emulatable (is that a word?) version would be the Mame one of course.

The best computer version is for the Japanese X68000 - it's nigh-on arcade perfect. The best computer version aside from that is the Spectrum one, which I'll link here. And like Vroom! says, the best version of all is the arcade version via MAME.

Edit: and Vroom! beat me to it. :-)

dont any of you guys remember Super-Cobra on the 64?

side scrolling shooter, in a helicopter, i guess might have influenced Silkworm.

/ponders over memories of 1985 (The Goonies, BMXing, Nike trainers).... ah to be 12 again

Wasn't Super Cobra just a conversion of the arcade game of the same name? Sort of 'Scramble with Helicopters'?
