Here's another vote for a subscription model.

I get a lot of joy out of EG; it's my main go-to site for just about everything. I certainly wouldn't mind paying an annual (or one-off) subscription to remove all ads from my time here.

I'd rather pay freakybun for his superb unofficial no-ads Android app.

Give yourself £5 or ½ gig, you're worth it.

It depends which of the site's journalists has written the advert. Oh yeah, that's right, I am talking about the previews and reviews ;) BOOOOM! amirite?

In all seriousness, no, I just use Adblock (like all sensible surfers should), and a tinfoil hat for good measure (just to be on the safe side).

Why would someone want to pay rather than use adblock?

Adblock should have a feature that 'clicks' the adverts it hides randomly in a hidden browser window then silent closes it at a random time.

The sites get their click through anyway, and you don't get bothered with the ads.

The only losers are the marketers until they realise this model is shit and stop doing it.

No, but at this rate, I would gladly pay for the return of portable view.

    ... remember that, anyone?

Thats actually a really good idea. Compassionate adblocking. Im sure you could call the advert but not actually render it.

I visit EG via iphone and am getting fucking fed up with the fucking ads for shit casinos that fill the whole fucking screen and block the menus. I mean what sort of cunt uses online casinos anyway? What a load of shite.

The majority of the cost for the site will be staff I expect and since they have almost nothing to do with the forum (other than removing the good features and breaking others) then no I wouldn't pay as I don't visit the front page.

Historically the 'content' I've come to EG for has come from the forum rather than the front page, a small minority of the articles are worth reading and don't get me started on the reviews.

If EG was a paywalled site shouldn't the forum members be getting the lion's share of the subscription then?

Though, forumites would have to pull their socks way, way up. There hasn't been much decent discussion in the last few years, the mods would have to be neutered of course to allow the foul primordial soup of shit threads and offensive posting to start brewing up again.

Is this to do with the EG tweet yesterday?

Looks like it's been removed now after this thread was created, but I got a screenshot.

There is literally nothing on any entertainment news/reviews/forum website worth paying £60 for tbh.

If there was an EG paywall I wouldn't stick around. I've been here for a long time but i'd get over it pretty quickly. In the past i've thought about stumping the cash for a premium Giant Bomb account but at least they have the extra content. I'll keep on using AdBlock for EG.

I just don't see the problem with 99.5% of the ads. They're there but they don't get in the way of anything.

I know I alone don't really make much of a difference to what this site makes, but for the amount of time I use Eurogamer I'd feel a bit guilty if I started blocking their ads. I use freakybun's Android app a lot with that said, which is ad-free.

The staff are happy to look at/remove intrusive ads anyway, as long as they're told about them.

Wouldn't pay for ad removal, no. I pay for a Giant Bomb subscription because of all the unique subscriber content. Wouldn't even do that for Eurogamer tbh, since the staff aren't really on-screen personalities in the same way the GB crew are.

The ad-free EG idea is mooted every year or so; I think it's a good idea, especially for those of you who truly hate ads, but I don't know what premium content we would be able to offer alongside an ad-free experience.

@craigy Even if you packaged portable mode into the sub, I wouldn't subscribe. ;)

I don't mind ads, but I think EG's ads are amongst the most intrusive on the net.

But, they are not pop up ads. Which are what annoys me. I don't recall pop ups on EG. Unless I am doing something wrong?
