Thought he was deserving of his own thread.

Ah shit, really? Thought he wouldn't get out of hospital last time, but still, fuck.

Edit: Ah, he pretty much didn't. Great man, a hero of mine really.

Isn't his biopic film out soon? Wonder if they'll want to delay it a little.

President Zuma just announced it on live TV.

Not a surprise he's finally succumbed to his age and illness but at the same time it's a shock. RIP Nelson.

UK premiere was tonight, it came out in SA last week, it'll be interesting to see what the film studio does.

Edit: Hopefully they're a bit more considerate of the news than this idiot.

A great man, I honestly can't think of anyone who approaches his stature in present times. A real hero.

A great man, very sorry to heart about this. Twenty seven years and then Winnie to look forward to - about as committed as you can be !

It's pretty mind boggling to think of it, I'm guessing the average age of forum posters on here is about 25 - 35 so it's basically their lifetime.

What a life though, 95 years and everything he did, saw, fought for and went through. If we can achieve even half of that selflessness in our own lifetime then we'll be doing alright.

I remember seeing him in Leeds 12 years ago when he visited the city and made an honorary freeman. There was a huge crowd packed into a small space but everyone cheered as loud as they could when he stepped on stage and gave his speech. He was frail from age even back then but his natural charisma was still present and charmed the whole audience.

I'm still in shock. He was one of the most important men in history and I got to see and hear him live.

I can't believe they made him go to Leeds, after his prison sentence.

BBC coverage is really doing well. Great tribute. And very sad.

When I was 15 in South Africa and he was elected I remember the fear we as whites had of him. The fear of reprisals and revenge. I am sad I judged him like that. He turned out to be such an amazing man and an inspiration to millions all around the world. If any human had ever been deserving of sainthood it is him.

    RIP Madiba.

    :(

No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.

A truly great man, our beacon of hope in a desperate world. RIP Nelson Mandela.

"Thank you the people of Liverpool!" :D

    Slightly confused but utterly inspirational.
