Played a bit earlier, the mix of 3D and 2D art looked really off in the intro, but once the game gets going it looks really nice, the Backgrounds are fantastic

Really enjoying the writing and humor too of course, a couple of laughs so far

    Oh, hello.

This worth a pop then? Might grab the Vita version if it's actually good.

I'd say yes. The story, characters and puzzles are all enjoyable. They've certainly captured the feel of the old Broken Sword games. The hand drawn artwork is brilliant too.

The aspect ratio went weird on mine, now shows in a letterbox and the game doesn't have any resolution options :(

Tried a few fixes people mentioned online, but no luck

Great review. Nice to see some different genres make a hit. From what I can gather, the games sold pretty well so far.

Cheers. It is a great game; but point and click veterans will find it rather easy, as I mentioned.

One thing to note since the review was published is that I was contacted by Revolution, who assured me that all spelling and grammatical errors will be rectified in a post-release patch. So that's something for the grammar pedants among you ;)

I'm interested to see the response from the veterans of this genre. I personally find a lot of the games that are considered classics of the genre suffer from poor puzzle design.

There's a differences between being difficult and being obscure and not fun. If clear direction is given to your long term goal and your immediate ones, I feel there wouldn't be an issue.

Interesting you should say that; I've been replaying the original Broken Sword recently and it's quite apparent these days just how illogical or otherwise frustrating some of the puzzles are.

I certainly remember at the time of its release that the Goat in Serbia (I think it was Serbia?) caused a lot of people trouble. And it could be finicky in the sense of hiding objects in strange places or giving them very small detection boxes.

Part of me does feel that the new title - bearing in mind it is only the introductory half - is on the easy side; but then I've played the crap out of the genre over the years, so I'm used to some pretty damn tough difficulty spikes and obtuse puzzles - Discworld 2: Missing Presumed... springs to mind :)

Discworld 2 deserves an award for its poor puzzle design lol.

Some parts of the older Broken Sword games are a bit off, but I think it made it a bit easier as you weren't thrown into a long list of items and too many scenes to explore.

Take the Monkey Island games for example. They're considered classics by many, but I personally had issues with them. Too much to explore and too many illogical puzzles for me. It easily became unfun and frustrating to me.

Escape from Monkey Island, for me, was the low point. I think Curse had the right idea in giving the option of two different difficulty settings.

Plus Curse had the Sea Shanty scene, which is one of all-time favorite gaming moments:

(god knows why, but the youtube link thing doesn't seem to be working right now... but there's the link)

Holding out for the Vita version myself, I never played a Broken Sword game until the first two were released on the iPhone and loved them.

Although the Discworld chat got me thinking of my favourite point and click game, Simon The Sorceror, and just seen it's on the App Store along with the second one! Sold!

@darkmorgado if you stick [ url ] at the start of your link and [ /url ] at the end, it should link it. I've only spaced them out so you can see them. They need to put as one word to work :) .

I never made it through the whole series of Monkey island. Played the first one and had issues with the exploration and puzzles. Some of them are good, but I found some of them a bit too poor to enjoy. Did you ever play Discworld Noir? That's pretty good.

@SG59 Discworld Noir was great :) Couple of frustrating puzzles, but it was a huge step up. Shame we never saw another in the series

Is the Vita version not on the store today? I was wondering how to get my download code...
  • Deleted user 18 December 2013 16:55:26
I don't think the kickstarter included a vita code.

I liked the style of Discworld noir. It really is a shame they didn't carry on. Think the company went into admin after its release :(

@InvisibleCrane There's a vita, IOS and PC version out at the moment. I know an andriod one is in the works too, but that's it.

I'd check the specs required for the PC version. These sort of games don't usually require anything special to run. A lot of people are running these type of games on notebooks.

I'm loving this. Great story so far, some interesting characters, music is good, art is amazing.

Currently at 16%, 3 hours and 32 mins in. Haven't been stuck too much yet, so I reckon it's going to last a bit longer than 8 hours.

Was that at 100%? Or is 100% when both episodes are completed? I was thinking that each individual episode would be 100%
  • Deleted user 9 February 2014 13:15:08
You only hit 50% in episode 1. Both episodes equals the whole game.
