Cheers, thought that might be the case. It's a charming game, quite unlike Grandia 3 which I've just come from. Love the monster animations - especially the dance curse. :D

Heheh, no? I've seen it lick its face, and lick the enemy. I also like the pepper kebabs. :D

I suspect I'll have trouble maintaining interest, it looks a bit too open-ended. I like my RPGs like my women, short and on rails.

I think you get fewer skill points at higher levels, so it'll be hard maxing anything out to get top abilities if you spread 'm all around...

don't forget to build up knives and staves skill for Jessica!
How can you *not* put everything available on Jessica's sex appeal??

I've been distracted from this by the World Cup, summer, and just plain life. Hoping to go back to it at some point.

So having previously decided I really couldn't be assed with random battle rpg's any more, I put this on the shelf after only getting an hour into it.

However, having had another bash, I am now, against all odds, loving it :) I do however have a couple of questions regarding specialisation in skill points.

Basically, what would those who have played it recommend I specialise in. At the moment I've got the main character specialising in boomerang, purely because its awsome to be able to take out 5 monsters at once. Yangus i'm still specialsing in Clubs, purely because I havn't seen a reason to start on the others, still very early on in the game, only just got to Alexandria so I havn't got any of the other characters in the party yet but there you go.

So thoughts people, am I going to miss a fantastically useful battlefield skill by not specialising in swords with my main character, or by not using axes with Yangus etc etc ?

Oh, and roughly how long is the game ? I've just got back from the tower mission in Alexandria and the game clock reads at about 4 hours. So judging by that, how long should I take to complete it ?

It can be anywhere from 50-70 hours depending on how you play. I'm at the final castle clocking around 60 odd hours - I did a lot of levelling and faffing about though.

It's a great game. Better than Blue Dragon. ;)

I'd say around that too; my clock said pretty much 70 hours exactly. I took my time with it too so you could conceivably finish it even sooner than that.

I'm quite curious about this... I'm doing the same thing... so can anybody please answer this one?

Go over to GameFAQs and look at their Dragon Quest 8 forum. There's a rather excellent stickied post at the top of the forum which tells you everything you need to know about skills and lets you decide up-front which weapons paths to follow.

I didnt do Axes at all with Yangus, I did Scythes - then started doing Axes late on when I had fully maxed Scythes. It didnt make the game harder but I still felt I missed out a bit. I would do swords with the main geezer though.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realise half of them are stupider than that

Another question :) So far i'm finding it somewhat easy, I've just left the Abbey after Dhoulmagus kills the abbot so not sure how far that is in, but i'm finding none of the bosses so far have really bothered me ? Am I just out levelling the game, or am I about to get my ass handed to me ?

Edit - Oh.. and another thing, I'm trying to use the alchemy pot to make stuff, but even when I have a receipe giving me hints, I still can barely make anything. I'm tempted to buy one of every damn weapon to try and make the advanced boomerang thing since aparently I need "something pointy" but its quite costly to do that, only to find you cant even use that particular weapon in the pot !

So.. long story short, is there a way of telling if an item is useable in the alchemy pot before you buy it ?

There are two boss battles in the main game which I found pretty tricky at first, but the rest are fairly straight-forward. Interestingly, neither of these two bosses are the final one. ^_^

Oh and so far I'm on about 85 hours, and I haven't visited some of the towns (one on the west continent on the bridge you see heading to the small chapel) as the guards won't let me pass. So I'm thinking maybe another 10-15 hours till I finish it. I think the only other game I've spent 100 hours on is Oblivion and it's expansions.

    0.o

    85 hours at that stage?!

The Dark Ruins fight is a real bitch. I think some careful play making sure Jessica and the poofy guy both had ressurection type magic.

God, I've completely forgotten everything I knew about this game. :(

As has been pointed out earlier in the thread, get Angelo to 30 and he gets Multiheal. Makes the Dhoulmagus fight pretty easy.

If you're only up to the dhoulmagus fight in the dark ruins then no you are no where near done, how the hell has it taken 85 hours to get to that far?!

Think again. You're about half way, maybe a little less.

Mr. Psycho, how have you failed to beat Dhoulmagus at that massively over-levelled, eh, level. You pwn him with that kind of level. I think I finished the game, and barely beat the first 'extra boss' at a level in the low thirties...

I've just reached a castle in which is a bereaved king I have to help. How far in is that, percentage wise.. just out of interest ?

Great game. No harm in getting your ass handed to you, you'll be stronger next time you fight him, and only lose half of your money if memory serves. Fight the good fight!!! :)
