On a news topic, I asked pretty much the above. At the time I wondered if it was the right place for such a question, and having given it some thought, decided to ask it here. The question is:

If you had some magic power to demand the source code to a game, which game would you choose, and why?

There's no real right or wrong answer: I've chosen an old PC game, cos that's what tickles me, but you could equally say "the new Mario game, so I can play it on my NetBSD install" or whatever.

I'll kick off the proceedings with...

    game: Severance: Blade of Darkness
why: I'd like to see this game with decent controller support added in. The game itself is fairly deep with it's combos, but it had a bizarre approach to left and right (event then) so general moving around is cumbersome. The locations had the full fromage tang of films like Conan the Barbarian. It also had some decent graphics for the time, and some HD texture support would be neat.

Well, quite. That would be good. If nothing else, it'd be nice if hackers could update the animations, those always ram home the age of that game.

I'm sure if the source code for the sequel was released, fans could code out some of the more egregious aspects of that game.

    Master of Orion II.

Reason: Because I still play it, fifteen years since I purchased my copy.

My initial game to save was about adding in functionality I thought it should have, but you raise a really valid benefit of having access to the code: maintenance. And to that, I add...

No One Lives Forever. 1 & 2. Judas priest on a tricycle those can be finnicky things to reinstall.

All King's Field games (PS1-PS2 era).
Also Final Fantasy IV, V, VI. I mean full 3D engine, not prettier sprites.
