As a dedicated user, I was surprised to hear that AOL are axing off Winamp.

Not that it will matter to me - I'm still using the old version, complete with classic base skin - but reading on various sites, they seem to be surprised that people still even use it!

So, what the hell do people use to play their music?!

Installing Winamp on a fresh Windows install and hearing the "really whips the llama's ass" is an instituation.

Nullsoft shouldn't have sold out all those years ago, it was their baby. Legendary and most reliable program ever. Hasn't crashed in over a decade... and the memories!!

It was synonymous with the rise of MP3, and stuff like Napster. The end of an era indeed.

    I am saddened.

I used to love Winamp when I was still using Windows. I guess until there was a media player in the system, people would download and install something else. Since there is one, they'll just use whatever comes bundled in.

Hearing it whip the Llama's ass after installing Windows 98 for the first time. Good times.

Winamp 2 was absolutely terrific -- when I moved away from PC to Mac it was the only thing I missed.

    Sad times!

I still use Winamp. I really like it, and I never do anything 'AOL' with it.

Whaaa...? I've been using it for the last couple of years and love it.
I only started using it after hearing so many people rave about how good it was and how far it had come since the early days.

I've got a skin I love and some plugins I couldn't live without.

People often ask what was the best day of your life. Birth of a child, wedding, day you graduated. For me it was that rainy Sunday in the late 90s when I discovered visualisation plugins.

    RIP in peace.

@Moot_Point Winamp is free. There was a pro version, but I don't know what it does. You're best getting the classic version.

Also - visualisation were awesome indeed. Lights out, volume up

Infact there was a ton of mental plug-ins that did almost anything you wanted, there was a great mod community.

    @Sir_Walter_Rally

MusicBee has been my music player of choice for a good while now, ahead of Winamp too.

No one is looking for a replacement, this thread is about the death of the greatest MP3 player ever.

I feel like they really missed a trick by not making their own MP3 players, they would have beaten the ipod to market and mopped up if even a quarter of the people who used winamp bought one.

It was one of those things that came a little too early/late and got embroiled in the venture capitalism idiocy.

If the right people had bought them, im sure winamp would be a household name.

I had no idea people still used Winamp. I guess they probably still have Real player installed as well.
