    Link

True or not this isn't exactly out of the blue, as as you can see.

Here's the video of the woman speaking at the ceremony with Kaufman's brother.

Bollocks or not? Probably bollocks, TBH. :(

I hope so - it would brighten up the entire century. Sceptical, though.

The stuff with Jerry 'The King' Lawler still has me rolling to this day.

While it's sad he died (if he did), I think that I prefer the idea that his legacy after death was to have a longterm plan in place to keep the myth running that he faked his death. That's romantic and fits in with my perception of him.

The idea that he would actually do it, and do that to people he loved, and then having done that let people know he did it, is a bit dickish to say the least.

The letter to his brother in 1999 is the most intriguing thing to me. The woman could easily be written off as some mega-fan.

Like someone in the article says, if it is a hoax I'm not sure his brother is in on it.

It's all very interesting and I'd love it if it was real. There certainly seems to be a lot of strength behind the story as well. I don't think it's completely unreal to believe that he could have lived a life as a stay at home dad in some rural part of America,

It doesn't take a genius to see from her body language and facial expressions that she's clearly bullshitting and after a bit of attention.

Is it a crime to fake your own death?

There was that canoe guy wasn't there, but I think they'd claimed his life insurance

Elvis lives in a retirement home with JFK fighting ancient Egyptian mummies.

This is true. I've seen footage. JFK has been died black 'n' all.

Just because, I've often tried to think about how to do this. Obviously, dunno what the law was like in the US in the 80s, but anyway.

I genuinely don't know what checks exist for verifying a death certificate. When someone dies in the UK, you need to take the death certificate that a doctor filled out to the registry office. I've wondered what happens if you just nick a blank one and fill it in. I don't think anyone checks that the person that filled it in is who they say they are.

The "problem" arises around the body. If there is a cremation, there are a lot more checks in place, and multiple people get involved. If it's a burial, then you need a body. A dead human isn't exactly easy to come by, as people tend to be quite interested in what happens when someone dies and what happens to the body after. I guess the idea situation would be to state that you died at sea or something.

In Kaufman's case, there is a body. He was buried. So if he faked his death, then there is a corpse of a person there under false pretences. Somebody, somewhere, has either spectacularly fucked up, or must committed a crime by falsifying a legal document or stealing human remains. I'm sure the latter is illegal, even in America.

And yes, that is rather a lot I've written on a rather morbid subject. I am a strange boy.

He must have had a fair amount of money when he died. He could have paid the appropriate people off.

I don't think that happened though. He's dead.

Parinello, who met Kaufman when they were undergrads at Grahm Junior College in Boston, says he is convinced of the story's veracity, even though he attended Kaufman's funeral and saw his body with his own eyes.

"It was a closed casket," he recalls. "Only the family [and myself] actually saw the body." How then does he reconcile Monday's events? "Andy was an aficionado of meditation," he explains. "One of the things Andy was taught at the highest level was a process where one could slow down his breath to a point where you can literally fool anyone that you may be dead when in fact you are alive. So that's the one thing that Michael checked for."

He was also an expert of transcendental meditation which teaches you how to put your body into a state of what appears to be lifelessness. It would be incredibly cool if he did pull it off and is still alive today.

The Smoking Gun claims Kaufman's "daughter" is a New York actress whose dad is a Manhattan doctor

Not surprising, if true. Hard not to be slightly disappointed, but the idea that Kaufman left instructions for his family and friends to perpetuate the idea that he might still be alive is just as awesome (maybe even moreso because it removes the issue of the dodgy moral compass raised by an actual faked death).

Of course it's not true. But the fact that they went to all this trouble and that people really, really want to believe is testament to Kaufman's legacy.

I don't think I've ever seen a single thing he's done, not even an episode of Taxi, but I gather this would have right up his street, if not entirely orchestrated by him before his very real death as a prank for the future.

Any Netflix library in the world for a couple of quid a month? Gimme!

There's a fair amount of stuff on YouTube. I'd start with the HBO special from 1977 and the restaurant sketch on Fridays with Michael Richards (although the audience is really annoying on the latter).

I would love this to be true. Loved Taxi so much as a kid, even though most of the jokes (and drama) probably sailed over my head, Andy was always my favourite thing in it.
Man on the Moon was the first film Mr Local bought me, possibly Carey's finest film, he does a great job as Kaufman.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

If I was faking my death, I probably wouldn't mess around with corpse theft or anything like that. Not when I could have a waxwork made and put in a casket.

    I love a good conspiracy!

    I just read on the BBC that;
"Famously, after he played Carnegie Hall, he hired 24 buses and took the 2,800 audience members out for milk and cookies."

    Brilliant!
