    AMENDED OPENING POST

Five EG Regulards are running the Adidas Thunder Run 2014
    in aid of SpecialEffect Charity.

SpecialEffect help people with physical disabilities to play video games.

The five EG Forum members are -

    AccidentProne
    ReGuRgIt8oR
    Rhythm
    SaucyGeoff
    Zomoniac

and together we are Team Eurogamer

The Thunder Run is a 24 hour relay race ran over a 10km cross country circuit where one team member has to be running on the course at all times. For 24 hours. Day and Night. We are aiming to try and complete 5 laps each (50km each).

It would be great if you were able to donate to our fund raising effort and help disabled people enjoy our favourite hobby.

You can also follow us on Twitter @TeamEurogamer

    ORIGINAL OPENING POST FOLLOWS

Ok team - entries open on Oct 15th at 23:59.

    A team of 5 will cost 280 - that's 56 each.

The provisional team (and peeps with first dibs on being in Team EG) are -

    Regurgit8or (me)
    Zomoniac
    AccidentProne
    SaucyGeoff
    Rhythm

    1st Backup Man is CharlieStCloud

As far as I can tell I will need to know your full name and D.O.B. to complete the team entry so if you are ok with this then please PM me before the 15th.
Edit - sometimes they ask for any affiliated running club details and t-shirt size so let me know those too.

I will try to enter as soon as the entries open (I.e. Midnight on 15th) so if you were able to be online at that time it may help if they need additional personal info for the entry. Or maybe you would consider giving me your mobile no. and I could text you with any queries.

Obviously there is a level of trust involved here. I would not abuse or misuse your details - hopefully I've got a decent enough reputation on here to back this promise up. I would also point out that I am also offering trust in that I will pay the fee up front and worry about your shares later.

So please post here if you are "All In" and that you think the above is ok.
If anyone else is interested please post in here to let us know. We can enter more than 5 but to go above 5 it has to be a mixed sex team (I think all 5 team members so far are male).

Possibly we could do with a backup person who could be drafted in as a stand in should anyone need to drop out.

Fingers crossed we get in - I believe there will be a rush on it.

    Thanks Altitude.

I'm going to ask if EG would consider assisting/supporting us in some way.
Custom printed Eurogamer technical tees etc would be good.
Would hope one of us has access to a GoPro style camera to film some of it.

EG could use it as a way of showing how video games and active lifestyles can co-exist.

Massive respect to you guys from me. I'm only just getting to 10km runs!

What are you hoping for... about one lap an hour or something?

Carlo, sort of. A chap I know who ran it this year managed his first lap in 45 mins and fifth lap (and last) in 1:20 although the weather at that point was foul.

Sort of hope we can manage about the same ourselves and try to get 5 laps in each.

Messaged, sorry for the delay :-)

Should point out that EG PMs are banned here at work so the best way by far to get me is via email or mobile

More than 10k in any given month would probably prove fatal to me, so I am hugely impressed with you guys. *

Is it just for fame and glory, or are you raising cash for anyone?

If so, post your details and I'll chuck you some pennies.

*Assuming you actually do it. ;o)
I mean, I could say I'm doing it.
I could do it I suppose. I didn't see any rules about 'no taxis'.

A shame about the five people team.

... I would happily be the 'back up' guy if you wish?

I have done half a dozen half marathons in the past few years so, this would be fairly reasonable for me to pursue although I'd probably die at the end.

    Ok prospective Team members.

Thanks for all the PM's I've now got all your details.
Don't know what else they will ask for on the entry so fingers crossed for midnight tomorrow night.

I'd imagine I'll have to nominate a Team Leader.
There's a chance it will default to me as the lead entrant on the entry but if it doesn't who should be or how should we choose a Team Leader.

Gamerscore ? The Old EG User ID numbers ? Age ?
Random ? Most EG posts ? Longest registered EG member ?

Let me know what you think - (for the record I'm oldest in age and I think lowest user ID ergo longest registered EG'r of us).

    Also Team Name ?
    Something witty ? Team Eurogamer ? Team Eurogamer.net ?
    8/10 ?

My vote would be for Team Eurogamer.net as this advertises the EG site (if it's allowed by both the Thunder Run mob and EG).
My logic here is to then politely ask EG to help us out.
I'd like to try to get EG logo technical t-shirts to run in and maybe we could do it as a fund raiser for EG's chosen charity and get a bit of promotion from EG and sponsorship from the EG regulards ?

Plus EG could then deliver a next gen mobile gaming truck to the Thunder Run campsite to boost our morale when we're not the person running at the time ;)

So let me know your thoughts.

I'd say, due to time constraints, that unless I hear differently then I'll default to myself as leader and Team Eurogamer.net

Otherwise we should simply go with the majority vote out of the 5 of us.

You get my vote dude and yeah, Team Eurogamer.net works too.

I'll try and be online for midnight tomorrow, but will most likely be drunkenly passed out on the train home. Call / text if there are any problems.

You have got to call the team 8/10!

    : )

You should be the team leader by the way.

All that sounds fine, Gurg. Where do UIDs get held these days anyway? I've been here since 2003 but I can't find the UID count anymore :-)

Maybe you can't find UID's anymore. Used to be hover over the user name but it doesn't show them anymore.

    Think I was 21 or 26 :(

If it is okay for me to ask, have all five of you guys done a long-ish distance run before, or maybe you go running several times a week?

... I only just realised that you'd be doing a shy over THIRTY ONE miles each!

Done six half marathons myself, but two and a half of those in 24 hours is quite crazy for me.

    : )

I run 5x10km runs a week, either to or from work, alternating with cycling. Most I've done in 24 hours is 3x 10km (to work, back home, then back to work the next morning). I figure as long as I keep that up I should be fine

    You are all set then!

... I suppose you work a shy over six miles away from home, hey?

My weekly mileage varies depending on what I'm training for. Average around 30 miles I guess, peaking at 42 near the end of marathon training. I don't tend to run every day though, usually alternate run days with the gym.

Have run a couple of marathons now and a few half marathons too. I should hopefully be able to cope with the distance, I'm more worried about my lack of experience with trail running. Going to pick up some trail shoes and start heading out over the fields every now and then I reckon.

    Christ.

I am a 'casual' runner compared with you guys!

... I was just hoping to sign-up to this for fun and see how we all get on.

Trail running's a lot of fun and way more interesting than road. It's easier to find yourself further along than you thought simply because there's more to see and having to pay attention to what your feet are doing focuses you differently.

I've done a couple of marathons and done about 80 Half training runs.
Weekly mileage can be 30 to peak of 70 per week.
Only ever done 2 x 10k in one day but will work on making that 3 for a few times before next July.

My UID is somewhere around 8k. Regardless, I'd be happy to nominate Gurgy for the role, he's done a fine job already, more of this sort of thing. Would also be up for some EG branding/teamname.
