    Hi !

I'm curious to know what do you guys think about the partial switch to Google services most recently.

To be honest i'm not the most dedicated EG.net reader ever for obvious reasons (the fact that i'm french and so is the news i'm usually looking at) but i noticed some recent changes, a bit unusual but definitly benefecial to the overall quality of the content despite of some exceptions to say the least.

So on one aspect there was the switch to YouTube for to upload EGTV and DF content, now i'm not that great of a buisness guy, but wouldn't it be better if they kept the stuff locally and gained direct ad revenues from ? For the sheer content quality (when talking about bitrates) i understand that YT has usually better offering in this regard but... yeah, may the members, mods or yet one of EG Staff members clarify this decision for me.

And on the other side and very recently i believe, Searching for content now relies on Google search...it's more ergonomic, less painful to spot what you're looking for, but in my opinion it lacks the accuracy and the effenciency that the old method used to deliver, it may be just be and i gotta learn how to better use it but for the moment it's not that great.

So, what's your whole general opinion about all of this ?

Are you perchance searching for "ass temps"?

A map is like comparing velocity and speed.

What is he on about? Ah wait he's French.
Can you indulge us in a somewhat personal question?
Do you pee in the shower?

Depends. Would you do it after sports in a communal shower?
I personally prefer to pee before I shower. The combination of pee and hot water isn't that much fun. It just makes the whole thing reek of urine. I prefer to just stand in the shower for 5 minutes to slowly wake up rather than doing it by hotboxing myself with pee smell.

Communal shower peeing just makes me think of gay porn.

Otherwise it's time efficient and you can get your feet to smell of something different for the day. What's not to like?

Possibly the biggest insult the world of IT has ever seen.

    Take that, Google!

This is easily the most bizarre thing I've ever read on EG, Craigy is a great bloke and the site is mostly awesome but he's not too useful at search engine creation and I'm sure he'd agree.

Almost every post is OT, incredible.

1- I did not criticize Google as a whole.

2- I'm """"""""""""""ONLY"""""""""""""""" targeting the custom search that Eurogamer utilises.

3- Read the whole thing before you reply.

I'm not saying it's bad, but it lacks some of the precision the old one had, before i used to click one and here i am, where i should be.

Now i have to go through more clicks to get where i want, i didn't say it's inaccurat, i said it lacked accuracy.

(Side note : It's completely insane how some people just try to reply as a... yeah i'm gonna get banned for that, so i better not say it.)

And this topic was supposed to be a place where you post your opinions, but it turned out that some trolls didn't want so...

The old search was TERRIBLE. I often just used Google to find threads rather than the site search it was that bad. It was a running joke on the forum that it was useless.

Now if I'm looking for a thread on a subject I can use the search function on the website.

    Before that was utterly impossible.

You know theres different tabs on the search? So you can select the 'forum' tab to only be shown forum threads and not news posts etc?

For general stuff, it works, the type of search i'm doing is more specific, and for that matter, it didn't help that much.

After all, it's a personal opinion, based on a my personal observation, was a bit surprised when i got flamed & bashed so hard for it, i'm not generalising or anything like that.

And BTW, when i'm on the forums, it's marked "Search Forum", but yet it searchs all, if it could go straight to that tab it would've been nice.

Also, do someone know why the switch to YT ? Lot of sites refuse to do it to gain access to direct ad revenues, why going full YT then ? I'm a bit curious to know. :|

(For those who are determined to burn my face again, take the time to actually READ the whole thing.)

It's pretty straight forward really. It makes more sense to have all your content in one place where it's easily controlled and available to a wider audience.

I'm sure that's worth it over 50p of google ad revenue every 6 months.

    Good morning,

It's interesting that you've taken note of our switchover to a few different Google services. The reasoning is pretty straightforward and boils down to:

    - Our internal team can build a video player, but it won't ever compete with YouTube's in terms of features or build quality. Our decision was made even easier by YouTube's recent support of 60fps video and even higher bitrates. Switching to their player also means we don't have to manage the infrastructural burden of a video encoding platform, which is a maintenance headache all of its own.

    - The same goes for search -- we don't really want to maintain an internal search engine when it won't be as accurate or fast as one that is offered by a specialist company. I'm sure many people are relieved to see us switch over to Google!

Having to maintain these extras really dilutes the focus of our team and means we get to spend less time thinking about our core offering -- great gaming journalism.

That being said, I do like the idea that we can do it all on our own, and don't like to cede control to third parties for features, as to me it feels like a defeat. But it's a reality that we can only juggle so many balls before the quality of our sites starts to suffer.

Yeah. As has been said before; the old site search was beyond awful. The video player was a bit ropey too. Now they get a bit more traffic via youtube and everything breaks less.

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

@craigy Thanks for the reply, much appreciated, it's nothing but logic indeed, the reality of it is that i appreciated the switch to the YT Player, it sure made things easier for your users and the bandwith requirements that this will necessitate over time, after using the Google search more... it seems fine, it'll probably help the average user more than what the old engine would've done, but i still things could be done even better on the search aspect of the website.

Anyway, once again, thanks and have a great day.

For the UK Gamer, yes, it's mostly humour around here, there's rarely serious replies when you bring up honest personal opinions, or it'll just be a stupid little detail that people will rant about for like 10 to 20 posts...

I sometimes wish that rules would be more severe, but i guess... i'll just have to deal with it. :/

@Lyserberg, I can honestly see that I've rarely ever seen such a strange (and entirely unnecessary) overreaction to a perceived injustice outside of an Ecosse thread. Bravo.

As for making the rules more severe, I'm sure I read something in the moderator rules about "humourless Frenchies" but I'd have to run a Google search to be sure...

I do like the idea that in every other version of EG around Europe, people are having serious discussions about stuff in every thread, but here as soon as someone posts anything vaguely on topic everyone just starts shouting nonsense.

Q: what do you all think of the new search func-

A: DO YOU PEE IN THE SHOWER?!?!?!
