Smaller screens! I was coming in here to ask about that. When you see it next to a 3ds original they certainly look smaller. Kills it stone dead.

Seems a very odd place to have the circle pad. Playing with stuff hanging under your hand position seems like a horrid idea.

There's one obvious, and extremely simple, reason why the controls are so high on the 2DS: shoulder buttons.

Dunno, on all the handhelds prior to the GBA:SP, controls were alongside the screen. To me they're a bit too low on the 3DS.

I think the top screen looks smaller on the 2ds in that shot cause it's laid down, and further away than the screen on the other 3DSes. Not sure why the bottom screen looks smaller and a different aspect ratio but the specs are pretty solid.

    @yenrug

Those shoulder buttons could have gone underneath or maybe indents at the side could have allowed for them. I think other options were available in positioning. For smaller children's hands the gap between the main controls and the touch screen is even greater on this design if that is who it is aimed at.

I really hope this does better than I'm expecting. I'm tired of reading negative Nintendo news but this really looks horrible. I pity the parent who buys this for their child after they requested a 3DS for christmas.

@BonzoBanana I understand that, but the point of this system is to simplify production and make it as cheap as possible; shoulder buttons in other locations, whilst ergonomically better, would have complicated the design.

This is pretty much a moot point though, for us, as who amongst us is realistically going to consider one of these as their main handheld? There was a good suggestion in the US Gamer site, though, with the lower price point it makes this a more viable option as an import system; admittedly, their viewpoint was for buying a Japanese one, but it becomes a possible option for us to buy a US one and allow us to import things like Atlus' output rather than relying on a slim chance of an EU localisation.

It looks alright to me. I mean, I won't get one - already have an xl - but I can totally see the sort of person who would.

The original DS was hardly beautiful.

And it's not like Nintendo are doing this just for kicks. They have focus groups and stuff to consult. Why would they design something like this if they didn't think anyone would buy it? It's cheap, and probably good for parents whose kids want their Pokemans for Christmas.

It's not for me, but Nintendo mostly have a pretty stellar track record when it comes to handhelds.

I'm not convinced Nintendo do much pre-market research as that would announce much of the details about these products. What would they say 'How do you feel about a wii with almost all decent features stripped out producing a poor quality composite image in a basic fisher price style case in red?' or 'How about a new portable 2D games console that uses 3D game software but only shows 2D and isn't very portable anymore at a slightly reduced price?' or 'How do you feel about a games console that matches competitor's consoles performance that were launched in 2005 with a new game controller with a resistance touch screen but no hard drive. We will price it close to next gen prices despite having very little software and dated performance?'.

I personally think Nintendo are making their own decisions but these seem massively influenced by manufacturing costs rather than consumer interests. There is a delicate balance between designing a popular desirable product and costing it correctly. Some compromises have to be made but Nintendo seem currently incapable of doing that job with any competence.

I was wrong about the wii I thought that would fail based on a its terrible specification and inflated price and hopefully I will be wrong about the 2DS. Not that the 2DS is a major product, if it doesn't sell enough it will just gradually disappear. Nintendo don't actually need it in their line up. A new and improved 2DS type product could easily replace it next year if necessary.

Yeah, the launch video shows plenty of lifestyle shots of people playing it, where you can see most of the back of it. It's got a weird stripe where the hinge ought to be, emphasising the fact it doesn't fold there. Very odd.

It looks pretty comfortable to hold to me. The one thing I don't get is that they seem to be aiming this at kids, and the kid in the video couldn't reach the triggers with his fingers. Doubly odd.
    Baby got back.

Yeah, the stripe is to indicate where the stylus is, something I didn't realise when I wrote that. And the triggers hinge at the inside top, I think, which should mean you get even more leverage on them if you hit them on the sides, since they curve all the way round.

Bit odd that in the Polygon review they point out how big it is, but in the Destructoid one they highlight how small it is.

I didn't realise they actually had that as a philosophy. That is really interesting. It explains why they set the wii u performance level so low. Clearly they felt the gamepad was enough to drive sales.

Seems daft the bottom screen has to be smaller than the top one.

Does look odd but that's how the 3DS screens were originally designed, they can't exactly stretch out the bottom screen now.

No, it doesn't, the bottom screen is still narrower than the top screen.

If I see the red and white 2DS going for Ł99 (come on Amazon, I have Ł50 worth of your vouchers!), I may buy it for my good friends sons 7th Birthday at the end of October. He is a big Pokemon fan as well.

... encouraging news that after the main unveiling, the 2DS is quite light and comfortable to hold. I just hope the screen is not a downgrade from the two 3DS models because that'll be a bit rubbish to be honest.

You know, I actually quite like it. From what I have read it is designed for children and is quite hardy I would have no problem getting my niece's and nephew's for their bday if it wasn't for the fact that I have 5 of the buggers

Budget console? I bought my brand new 3ds xl for cheaper than the rrp of this. Also, it doesn't look very trousers pocket friendly.

I thought the hoo-ha over 3D was a fringe thing for Daily Mail readers, until today in a game shop a woman told her kids, quite loudly, that they weren't getting a 3DS as she "don't want your eyes fallin' out yer head".

Maybe this 2DS will be a big seller.

That's pretty cool :) Almost everything seems to be using the resources from the real Nintendo site to keep it looking as genuine as possible.
