Apologies if the thread exists elsewhere as the EG search function has failed me yet again.

Does anybody know when the review embargo lifts as I am very interested in the game but has the possibility of either being truly great or truly poor. With the various pre-order offers I want to get in before Friday!

It can't be awful! If it were awful why would they be adding the entire XCOM back catalogue including the recent Enemy Unknown as a pre-order incentive.... wait a minute!

I imagine it will be quite good.

Not great, not awful, but quite good.

I like the telly advert for this.

It's essentially Mass Effect in the 50s XCOM universe apparently. How could that possibly go wrong? Hmm?

Can I sleep with a Sectoid?

If you can then I'm sure the EG review will have three paragraphs on this disgusting objectification of Sectoids.

I'm hoping to be a keynote speaker on the issue of Mutons in the Invasion Industry at the EG Expo.

I thought this had ditched the shooter approach and gone for a more squad-based real-time tactics title?

Not sounding good from the first reviews...

Mostly 7s isn't too bad. might be worth a punt in a few weeks when it gets cheaper. Price'll probably drop pretty quickly too, given the fact that they don't appear to have actually advertised or promoted it anywhere.

@Blerk Decision made, I concur! I will wait out for the inevitable steam sale this Christmas.

Me too. I was thinking of taking a punt on it but the dodgy AI sounds annoying. Like Garrus in ME, always trying to be a hero and then crying for help!

What are the reviews saying about length?

A little disappointed by the reviews - saying that, with Splinter Cell, Wonderful 101 AND Saint Row IV all coming out on the same day, i actually dont mind picking this one up in a month or two when its cheap.

Oddly Destructoid says it's 8 hours while IGN says 15 hours.

Apparently its not very well optimised for the PC either. Read earlier on neogaf that a i7 3770k @ 4.4ghz with a Geforce 780 and it runs awful (as in noticeable stuttering). Thankgod I didn't preorder this.

I played the first few hours last night, unfortunately the reviews are right - it's just not very interesting. At all. It feels like the bare minimum they could have done to create a squad-based shooter with a thin coat of XCOM paint over the top.

And as mentioned the PC version runs like boiled arse.

Slight update, one setting makes the game run like arse. Surprisingly its not PhysX. If you switch off Screen Space Reflections Its actually very smooth with high FPS.

So it does, cheers! Miles better now.

I'm actually quite enjoying it now that my agents are levelled up a bit and don't need to be revived every 15 seconds...

Its ok but 7 is a bit generous (4.5 is a bit harsh). Once you get some powers it becomes a bit more tactical but its hardly a focused tactical game. Its a 3rd person shooter with squad commands slapped on

Later on the enemies love grenade spam (your fellow ai can't use grenades or have a 2nd weapons and tend to not avoid enemy grenades)

worth a rent, its just a mish mash of games but does not doing anything that well

Has anyone actually played this yet? I just wondered if there's a day one patch. It's a 2K game, so I'm guessing yes.

    Ed: 360 version btw.

Really struggling to enjoy this. Played about 4 hours so far, it's just dull and irritating, like the shooting bits in Mass Effect 3 but with crapper AI, bullet sponge enemies, boring weapons and barely any special abilities.
Plot is hammy, characters are shallow cliches, there are some conversation choice type things and mini-missions but they seem to make bugger all difference.
Going to play for another couple of hours and if it doesn't improve, I'm uninstalling.

there has been no day 1 patch on 360 so far.

It does take a while for your squad to get some useful abilities to use, they can be ranked to lvl 5. Also Jim robinsons voice is fucking annoying, he really phoned in half asleep. Giant bombs review is spot on

Playing this at the moment, and it's alright to be honest.

The combat is fun enough, but it does feel a little low budget and perhaps even the result of a troubled development.

It's very linear, and level-focused, and now I'm craving finishing this and getting stuck into the far more freeform Saints Row 4.

I've only really played introductory mission but I rather enjoyed that once I got the hang of it. I think it looks really nice on the PC, especially the characters.

I like the look of the game but hopefully it will be in the Christmas steam sale.  For those interested giantbomb has a quick look up for the game to help you make your mind up.
