A thread for all your favourite hot off the press news bites and insightful commentary from EG's "night watchman" Jeffrey Matulef.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-07-29-20-cancelled-star-wars-games-revealed
A host of cancelled Star Wars games were revealed in the LucasArts tell-all book, Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts.

While published in 2008, the logos for 20 canned Star Wars projects is just now coming to light

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-07-25-call-of-duty-ghosts-confirmed-for-wii-u
While a Wii U version of the game had been hinted at, it was never confirmed until today when a picture of its box art recently popped up on Nintendo's official Wii U Facebook page.

I'm starting to lean towards the idea that Matulef is a character, a parody of games article writers. The frequent mistakes, first-person writing, some copy-pasted articles that are basically the game blurbs, advice to fund Kickstarters when he has no idea if they're any good so can't possibly be in a position to recommend them, and the repeated use of the word "whopping" for any number larger than one or any discount above 50% (three times in one article!). It makes much easier reading if you go in thinking that it's all intentional.

"I'm particular fond of the golden era noirish logo for Star Wars: Scum and Villainy, while you just know that Star Wars: Dark Jedi would have been that series' Shadow of Hedgehog."

    WTF is Shadow of Hedgehog?!

"Curiously, Disney has recently registered 40 domains for a new Star Wars project that isn't on this list, entitled Star Wars: Attack Squadrons"

Why is that curious? That list was made in 2008 and there's no telling how long ago the projects were cancelled before that!

"Listed under LucasFilm, these consist of StarWarsAttackSquadrons.com, SwAttackSquadrons.net, and SwAttackSquadrons.org. We don't know if Star Wars: Attack Squadrons is even a game, as it could very well be a show, movie, theme park ride, or breakfast cereal, but suspiciously EA has owned the domain to the similarly titled Attack Squadron since 2000. It won't expire until March either."

All of those domains will expire in March?! And that was three domains, not forty.

Oh, Jesus... that was just one article. :D

OK, put me on the list of robots that enjoy Matulef articles, for I am an Appreciaton.

    @PenguinJim

Well, they might expire, but they could also be renewed. It could also just be a simple pre-emptive move to prevent future cyber-squatters. Either way it's pretty meaningless until it's confirmed what, if anything Attack Squadrons is. Domains get registered all the damn time (and funnily enough, Logos get designed too, doesn't mean something was ever actually in development with that name, a lot of those titles struck me as simple ideas for a name for a single game - several of them look like different ideas for a Jedi Knight sequel name, and I'm fairly certain that Star Wars: Obi Wan was meant to be the first in a whole series of games focusing on different characters until it tanked harder than the titanic, which could explain at least three of the other names on the list.

Pretty pointless article, all told. But then, yeah, Matulef.

Also, you just know that kickstarter update on Liege is one of his as well.

I have a hunch that the Disney ones don't expire in March, and we're just the victims of Matulef's eccentric wording. :p

I stand corrected on the "whopping" issue. Apparently 49% is also "whopping".

For your delight and enjoyment: https://www.google.com/search?q=%22matulef%22+%22whopping%22

(Don't click that if you play the EG Drinking Game, as one of the "everybody drink" conditions is Matulef saying "whopping" )

    Edit: fucking close-parenthesis + close-bracket = winky-face bug. :champ:

Christ, he's just published another 2 in the space of about 30 seconds.

He must be feeling rather productive today.

Makes you wonder if he just has a bloody stockpile of these things already prepared and just sitting in a folder on his windows desktop.

I don't think I can comment on that Kickstarter one without sounding bitchy. :D

But I did notice yesterday that the Xbox One controller + charge kit was available to pre-order in the UK for 50, and I wasn't even looking for it.

It's not even particularly noteworthy. Official controllers have always been expensive. It's not as though the 360 controller or the DS3 is particularly cheap. If anything, it's more of a surprise that they're still as expensive as they are. You'd think that, along with the actual consoles themselves, the controllers would also get cheaper as production becomes more efficient. But you never see any journalists writing about that.

"While published in 2008, the logos for 20 canned Star Wars projects is just now coming to light (thanks, AllGamesBeta)"

If I want to be a dick, it should be "are just now", rather than "is just now."

But y'know, I read through EG and always see a load of mistakes, I just figure that they write them in a rush and then that's fair enough really.

    Get bent.

I much prefer his style (and EG in general) to something like IGN, though. I'm fine with the more colloquial and informal approach, we're talking about games, not politics.

Its probably quite difficult to bring your A game when you are being asked to report on such thrilling topics as Kickstarter Game #4598.

Also that article title is just misleading. Clicking through to the original link you see:
Concept logos for potential titles of some Star Wars projects

A logo does not equal a cancelled game.

I'm still not entirely convinced all of his articles get advance editorial oversight. I wouldn't be at all surprised if his position boiled down to "Can you stretch out anything to tenuously link enough things in gaming to pad out a GMT night-time? Good. You're hired."

Not that I think he is genuinely incapable of writing something acutally relevant (some of his Kickstarter articles have, at least, highlighted something that I overlooked during my regular browsing for interesting-looking games ideas) of course. I'm sure somewhere he's written something pretty damn good for EG and actually does have good experience. I'm just not so sure the job interviewer cared as much as Jeff might have hoped.

Dark Souls mod reimagines the game in first-person! Sounds interesting, maybe I could give that a g...

The mod doesn't appear to be available for public consumption, but that's okay as it looks almost entirely unplayable.
