@CompetitiveDad Thanks a lot, most helpful. When I do decide which phone to get, I plan to get a sim-free one as I've not been on a contract for years now (so shouldn't get any network operator bloatware), stick to rolling monthly ones (12/month Virgin). I think I'm going to hold out a couple of months to see how the new iPhone turns out, and will decide between it, M8 and Nexus 5. Perhaps a Z2 compact if Sony releases one by then. Whatever happens, I definitely need to switch up from this 4 year old phone.

@BurnoutJunkie you only get operator/carrier bloatware of you get the phone from them directly.

If you use a reseller like carphone warehouse/phones4u they offer handsets across most networks. The easiest way for them to do that is to offer unlocked handsets. I don't buy outright always get a contract but I only get handsets from resellers. No bloatware that way.

I have a note 3 at the moment same as a colleague at work. He has so much extra 02 related crap on it and also gets a stupid NFC icon on his status bar. I did however get a fuckton of Samsung related shit.

However I quickly rooted, backed all that shit up and then binned it off.

Looking for a budget phone (100 or less) for my daughter. Is there anything better than a Moto G (3G, 8gb version) for around the same money ?

Also, she has moved back to the UK and I'm trying to set up her up on a cheap mobile plan, either PAYG or a 10 month contract. In France we have a 2/month contract with unlimited texts and 2 hours of calls, plus a small amount of data. Don't suppose there is anything like that is there? Are there any operators/contracts to seek out or avoid ?

Well, if you want to just put in a little more, apparently Tesco are doing a 10% off deal tonight during the WC final - you can get the new Moto G (with 4G and expandable mem slot) for 134.

Also, check out giffgaff goodybags for decent PAYG/contracts (O2 is the operator)

Do Giffgaff do 4G though? There's no mention of it on any of their tariffs.

    Cheers Sport

I'm not going to tell her about 4G - she's used to 1.5G here so she'll be in luxury with 3G :) she'll be on campus most of the time and will have wi-fi. And I'm struggling to think why the SD card is useful if you don't want a load of video stored on your phone (she watches videos on a tablet) - suppose you'd have to shift photos and music around more frequently.

    Morning chaps
Im looking to update my Sony X arc S, does anyone have any thoughts on the Sony X SP ?
I have very limited knowledge of mobile phones, just want a sub 200 payg/sim free. I have had Sony's for years as I love(d) the Walkman phones.
Any help from the Hivemind would be appreciated
    :)

I upgraded from that phone to a Lumia 925. Apart from when I was initially getting used to the changes between Android and Windows, I have had no regrets.

I was also a huge Sony fan but didn't like their latest models (at the time).

The SP should be a safe bet, but if you don't mind ditching Sony you can probably get more for the money, or the same for less. I'm always quick to recommend the Moto G (ideally the 4G version) to anyone looking for a phone between 100-200 and I'd advise that over the SP.

Switching to the 925 as twelveways suggests would be a rather bigger change but actually that's a pretty great phone and under 200 now so worth considering. Depends what you want from your phone though, if you like having a lot of apps / customisation Windows Phone is not for you, but if you just want the standard smartphone features then it's a slick option.

Really fancy a Sony Z2 Compact. Anyone had a iPhone 5S and moved to that like I'm thinking of?
Might seem a bit odd but I want a change after six years of iPhone and iOS

    Get a One PlusOne
My colleague has one and it's glorious in every way.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.
