Just stumbled across this, which is an annoying listen in a way but utterly brilliant in another.

John's guitar tracks off Blood Sugar Sex Magik

And for you young whippersnappers who don't know who he is and have nothing to do for the next while. It's sort of a tragic tale with a happy ending.

    Young and fresh

Fucked up with a serious drug problem

Pulled through to make some real gems thankfully.

Man's a genius. Check out Niandra Lades and usually just a T-shirt. Or any of his solo stuff.

This. This. This. The guy is my hero.

His solo records are incredible. Curtains is probably my favourite album ever. The will to death, to record water for ten days and sphere in the heart of silence come might close. I really like left-leftur as well.

I can remember discovering he had solo material for the first time in 2004, upon stumbling across shadows collide, in the mist of him releasing 6 records that year, and it yeah, going to sound corny, he was someone i had found , my dude, the artist that helped be become the person i was becoming.

I had been listening to a lot of hendrix, floyd and zeppelin in my 6 form days and upon hearing his solo stuff instantly clicked.

    /gushing over ;)

yes (I hope). Got about half way through that first link of his guitar track on Suger Sex Blood Magik. Long may he play on.

I also love the various clips on youtube from live concerts where he does a little solo performance halfway though their set. Usually some cover.
Best part is him going "Can I do something" and Kiedis's body language screaming "no you fucking twat! Why do you always do this! I'm the singer, we're a band. Stop breaking up our great set list with yout tripe!" whilst he shrugs and goes "Sure" and stands there looking petulant whilst John does his thing.

He is my absolute guitar idol.

Sure, some of the stuff RHCP have done has been absolute cack, and Keidis is a bit of a bell end, but there isn't a track recorded by them which features John that I don't like.

His solo work is very unique. I find it very heavy to listen to but I always enjoy it. The Past Recedes is such a simple but brilliant track, one of my favourites ever by any artist.

I also saw RHCP for their Stadium Arcadium tour just before John left. They were absolutely amazing live. John and Flea jamming for about 15 minutes was one of the highlights of my life so far.

I've managed to remain ignorant of his solo stuff but I just listened to To Record Only Water for Ten Days and it certainly is good, thanks for the thread!

I'd steered clear of his solo stuff for fear that the man's musical genius may translate into some sloppy, overindulgent and tedious solo efforts, but good lawd, I've been wrong all this time.

Also - speaking of tedious self-indulgent musical geniuses - I just discovered that the man teamed up with Thom Yorke for Atoms For Peace. A mixed bag, that one, but I was overjoyed to see the two names together

I've got this memory of seeing them (RHCP) in a small venue in Edinburgh..must have been before BSSM. But I'm just not sure whether I'm making it up... it may have been Jane's Addiction :)

    Feb 5th, 1990, Edinburgh Network! Can't remember a thing about it :(

With your bump I loaded up google music and was greeted by their "try all access" or whatever they call their spotify-alike for free for a month. So I did that. Listening to some JF now as well.

His music never gets old, i been listening to him for almost 10 years now(yikes!) and still not bored. The best thing about good musicians, i have a different favourite album of his on a regular basis.

Also, check out Ataxia - a side project with him, josh klingoffer, joe lally (fugazi) its great, theres two albums.

Just listened to the first, Automatic writing. Lovely stuff. AWII on now.
At the end of "The soldier" from AWII (around the 10' mark), the distorted lyrics reminded me a lot of Kurt Cobain.

Now I'm going to have to check them out too, I love a bit of Fugazi and they are 'on hiatus' for now. :(

It'll be interesting to see what this Ataxia malarkey is like.

I missed this thread when it started. Frusciante is my favourite musician, he's a genius. Been listening to his solo material for years and his albums never age.

Thanks for pointing out Ataxia. Sitting at work listening to it again. Very enjoyabel!

I made the mistake of looking at this guy doing a cover/play along of "murderers" whilst I was learning to play the guitar. Boggles my mind that jumping between picking the top and strumming the bottom strings.

I don't know if any of you listened to Attention from his Ataxia album Automatic writing II with headphones on.
I tend to have some music on at work whilst I'm sat at my pc. So naturally with headphones on.
Around the 4:25 mark, they do this thing where they are sending the guitar and bass between the left and right speaker. Such a headfuck. It feels almost physically unpleasant when they do it but it's a neat effect.
