One-time (first-time) DRM still in place i.e. Xbox One not fully offline capable

Microsoft have reversed most of the DRM crud, but left a critical (to them) hook in place in the form of the one-time DRM "patch" that the system requires for it to be truly and freely offline.

Surely this cannot really be considered a "patch"? After all, they have months left to jockey around the launch system firmware in order to dispense with this "one time" check-in if they so wished.

It seems plain to me that the intention is to have any new Xbox One, whether bought Christmas 2013, or Summer 2016 etc, require an internet validation with Microsoft's DRM/update servers.

As a console/computer collector (as well as a player, naturally), this has implications for the lifespan of the sealed Xbox One systems years down the road. It's at the mercy of Microsoft's authentication servers still being active once the Xbox One is well and truly considered 'retro'. Now, I know, that is a minority consideration for most, but it still bugs me.

I hope there's an offline USB firmware upgrade option, though I doubt it - it would defeat the online system check, after all.

But what if you open a sealed Xbox One on a nuclear submarine off the coast of Zimbabwe in Summer 2016?!?

A map is like comparing velocity and speed.
