So, is it generally accepted that what we see at E3 is not representative of how graphics will look on XB1/PS4? I wasn't into gaming very much during the change over to PS3/360.

Are the presentations always running on more powerful devkits?

So, what's the deal? Will we see downgrades across the board?

Not generally accepted? I'd guess stuff will only get better.

I've just read a few rumblings such as, "those games are running on devkits/PC's that have simialr specs, they won't look that good on the actual hardware".

Wondered if that was the case.

Depends I suppose. Some will work to a spec and downgrade, some may upgrade as they get more proficient at the hardware.

I thought Watchdogs was a good representation of next gen graphics but yeah a lot of it was just CGI shite and not very representative of anything, but saying that Uncharted 2 is a stunning looking game and obviously that is this gen so /shrugs.

Is it supposed to be like this?

I'd have though devkits made before the specs have been actually finalised, which probably includes a few of them running at E3 will likely be a bit more powerful than what's actually released, given devkits don't need to worry about power consumption, cost and not sounding so much like an A380 on take-off. Bit tricky designing a devkit when the specs are down to the marketing department.

Same visuals as current gen but with the ability to display multiple snazzy effects. According to the Killzone devs.

Give yourself £5 or ½ gig, you're worth it.

    That's quite disappointing.

That's pretty much how it's been even since the Dreamcast, no?

For me the best thing about the next gen (and also the videos of WiiU MK) is how much better and atmospheric the lighting is.

I've always loved the marketing phrases like in engine and in game. Because it doesn’t necessarily mean on hardware.

@Razz true, but at least if its in-game it is somewhere approximating the expected output of the game. Albeit in some (bf4) cases the expected output on PC.

True. But come to think of it, I recall some devs saying their games are running out the next generation hardware

Given what we saw achieved with the current gen machines I'd say that right now we can barely imagine what they'll be doing with these monsters in 5 years time.

It's all bullshots and target renders. Will get much worse. This has always been the case. Why would it change this gen?

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

Because the visuals on show now are the lvel already enjoyed by PC owners. This was not the case with the original Killzone / Motorstorm debacle.

Will there be differences, probably, but the gulf in visual fidelity seen with the last round of console launch footage will not be anywhere near as pronounced if present at all.

Yeah, it all seemed very "doable".

I was really impressed with the MGS trailer though, I'd say that goes beyond what we currently see on PCs.

God I wish they'd reboot MGS with all the gameplay and none of the rubbish.

Sadly yes. They go as far as to defend that bollocks.

Kojima needs to stay the fuck away from stories and characters.

From @aegies on Twitter (multiple tweets stitched together):

"thing: every website out there right now is failing at showing its readers exactly what next-gen games look like. including ours (Polygon). that's also including publishers. it's not our fault, necessarily. but video streaming and broadband are behind where it should be. what you're generally seeing is like comparing a decent youtube 720p stream to a well-mastered blu-ray disc."

Basically, the issue is that web video isn't up to a good enough standard to really see what next gen really looks like. The compression on YouTube is pretty high, and as such is utterly terrible at representing what these games look like for real. He even put up the thumbnail for some Fuse video capture he did: 4 1/2 minutes at 720p, 60FPS - 28GB.

Gamersyde has pretty much the highest quality vids available from E3. Some stuff was stunning.

Gamersyde has always been amazing for that, even back in the early days when their coverage was separate sites for each console.

To be honest, I haven't seen any games from E3 that looked better than Crysis 3.

No... at this stage (6 months before release) you expect most, if not all, games to run on dev kits (Sony and MS). Just because it is easier for the devs to do. There will probably not be downgrades... probably only upgrades.
