Is anyone else utterly sick of Game announcements composed entirely of CGI clips and not a glimpse of any gameplay whatsoever?

Why can't we have announcements when they have at least something to show you what the game actually plays like?
Is it because all we give a shit about now is cinematics?

Or because the prerendered stuff looks better graphically and more dramatic in the framing and direction.

I also would like in game footage mind. I am a gamer after all.

Apart from the rather large chunks of The Crew and The Division that were gameplay. I was actually surprised just how much gameplay there was, though I will admit I'd love to have seen a bit more of Watch Dogs in-game.

I'd kick the living daylights out of the producers of Tipping Point - Ghandi

"A bit more" - Did you see any?

If you were pleasantly surprised that shows how low the bar has been set.
The Division looked gorgeous visually but was scripted to fuck.

The two repsonse to every E3 reveal:

"Mmmmurggh it's just a CGI trailer! Why don't they show some gameplay?!"

    Or...

"Grrruggh this gameplay looks so scripted! What's the point?!"

    Bunch of miserable cunts.

I'll never get my Orc looking the same again.

You appear to be getting yourself worked up by anyone that dares to say that anything they are being shown at E3 isn't totally the awesome.

I have news for you, it isn't. Or am I just being churlish too?

I believe ecosse is talking out his arse, even Trials had in game footage.

    You better watch out.
    You better beware.

"Even Trials" - it's a sequel to an XBLA game, who the fuck cares about more CGI for it, people want to see the game in action, of which we saw a few seconds worth among the CGI.
Watchdogs - We've already seen several CGI trailers, no gameplay shown.
South Park - Cut scene, No Gameplay
    AC4 - CGI, no Gameplay
    Splinter Cell: Blacklist - CGI

He is right though it is tiresome but it's not just the lack of footage it's the drip drip drip they do now. An announcement of an announcement of a teaser of a CGI trailer and all that nonsense.

Just tell us a game is coming and show it to people when it's done. RPS make me laugh now though, they have taken to posting these trailers and just saying don't bother watching as it shows you nothing :)

I suspect it's partly because the focus of console game makers is increasingly on towards people who mainly watch movies, and care more about the cinematic qualities of a game than sophisticated gameplay... who want their games to be like their action movies. All that cutscene/on-rails/QTE garbage suggests that imo. Ryse is a woeful example of that, it's like watching 300 with "press button shown on screen", erm, interactivity.

I think the games industry in general has a weird legacy issue with CGI.

When I was a kid CGI was relatively unusual, and any film that had CGI in it was a real talking point, and things like Tron were a massive deal because of their use of it.

And this filtered across to games, and the CGI bits in games like Final Fantasy VII were real highlights, and a big deal.

But now CGI is completely commonplace and you see adverts for bingo that have better SGI than a lot of games do. It's nothing special at all, and yet games companies are still using CGI sequences in a similar way, as if it still has the same impact. And it really doesn't.

I think CGI has its place in games/trailers, but it's counter-productive if the CGI trailer looks conceptually like the game footage, just significantly better. Current example: I made the mistake of watching the CGI trailer to The Crew before I saw the gameplay footage.

It's one thing to try and sell, say, a top-down RTS game with a CGI trailer where everyone knows it's just to set the mood, it's another thing to produce a CGI trailer that makes your actual game look like it's lagging two generations behind.

If all CGI was a good as the opening CGI of the Witcher 2, then I wouldn't mind with it's overuse.

    But it isn't.
