    I'll start with something I hear and read all too often:

    "PS+ is great value, all these free games, for only 39.99".

    Yes, it's good value for money (albeit perhaps less so if you rent), but Sony aren't some lovable charitable company giving you something for nothing.

    Just sayin'.

    Sony not being a charity doesn't prevent PS+ being a bargain, which it is.

    I still think that long term PS+ is bad for the industry.

    It touches on the biggest gaming fallacy, which is that companies are in it purely for the love of games and to spread joy and wonder to all humanity. See: the random Nintendo defense of "they have millions in the bank they can just burn through to support the Wii U!"

    Buying an XBone 1 game...

    (Not really a fallacy but I think it is of the same theme).

    You're arguing against a point that doesn't exist, for some reason.

    Maybe I should emphasise it in my OP, it's the word "free" that I'm referring to as a fallacy.

    I even said PS+ is good value for money (i.e., a bargain) in that post, and I am a paying subscriber so am all for the service.

    I never believed it myself until I took the plunge, but it really is a deal in a league of its own. I've only been signed up for about 3 months and already I've had my money's worth tenfold and have more to play than I know what to do with. They aren't stingy with what they put up either.

    Best feature of an online service this gen for me.

    Ok. Yes they're not free. In my head while reading it you put all the emphasis on the word value. I agree that nothing you pay a subscription for is free.

    I agree in part. I think it's bad for the money loving twattish portion of the industry.

    Sony has discovered that today you need to provide good service to keep/win customers. Microsoft still doesn't see that.

    I redeem my Nectar points for my PS+, so it's free for me Syrette.

    Sony might still disprove your theory by announcing their own DRM etc at E3. Hopefully not.

    @Syrette

    I'm far from convinced they'll have bad surprises for us. Given their current sacrosanct reputation, they can only disappoint. And if they should dominate the market again, they could do with us whatever they want again.

    Still, currently it looks a lot like they're concerned for some time now about providing better service, while MS seems to have gotten aware of the importance of service and satisfaction only after the XBone reveal backlash.

    It's going to make me buy PS4 and even a Vita though, so maybe not. And of course I'm still paying Sony 5 EUR a month.

    When people say 'emergent gameplay' they really mean 'non-fatal bugs we decided to leave in'.

    Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

    That there are no/few good or hardcore games on iOS. All I use my iPad for is games and I play it a hell of a lot more than I ever used my Vita and probably as much as my 360 or PS3 without ever resorting to tower defence, freemium, endless runners, angry birds or casual/social games in general.

    Sony got that idea from Microsoft and Live in the first place. They have picked up the ball and run with it, so to speak, while Microsoft have dropped theirs.

    @SparkyMarky81

    Perhaps, but the point remains. Currently Sony tries to convince players and developers with great service, Microsoft only tries to convince investors.

    No it's not. It just means that you paid for it in advance, as with all so-called "loyalty" schemes.

    You paid for it in advance as part of prior purchases, and you are additionally giving at least one marketing company a huge and steady flow of information about yourself.

    First law of physics and economics applies: "there's no such thing as a free lunch!" :)

    Perhaps you're paying subscription for the online game saves storage (or whatever other features PS+ bring) and you get the games for free.
