Apologies for the newbie dumb question, I bought (slightly on impulse) a 12GB PS3 at Sainsburys at 125, I don't care about downloading games or saving any other online content to the hard drive just playing games off the disc.

So the question is have I made a major blunder and should return it unopened or will I still be able to play games OK?

I also recall that you can upgrade the hard drive albeit at a cost so maybe that's something I can do in the future if needs be I guess?

Depends how many games you want to play as most require mandatory installs. But yeah the option to upgrade the HDD is always there.

It'll be fine. You'll be able to fit two or three installs on there at a time, and a lot of games don't even require one (or it's optional).

OK, I would not expect to ever be playing more than one game at a time and I would expect to finish one and then play another, my first will be Uncharted 3. I'm an old git with a kid so do not get heavy playing session more maybe a couple of hours a week.

A lot of disc games take up install space, I've never seen an optional one. The flash memory takes ages to delete. If you juggle games it can be a fag.

I stuck a hd in mine today. For the free games on ps+.

You'll be fine then. Unless you plan to get GT5 which has a massive install file.

There are loads with optional installs. The 10GB GT5 one mentioned above is optional for example.

Sorry, not my kind of game. I understand GT5 was an interesting one.

    * Ahead of its time I mean.
I've looked for the option but never had it.
Dragon's Dogma slips 4gb in with no mention on the box.

I'm fairly sure that the super slim doesn't come with a drive tray, so you will need to factor that in as well. I think they're about £10

Yeah, Amazon charging just shy of a tenner for one.

Oddly, on Amazon the new blue PS3 500GB with twin pads is 40 quid cheaper than the plain black super slim 500GB. Although they're not matching that Sainsbury's price on the 12GB, so I dunno what they're charging for the 500GB in any colour.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Apologies I probably should have clarified the price at Sainsburys, it was on the shelf at 138 but I had a '14 off a 70 spend' voucher so ended up as 124.

Bargain price, I'd say keep it. You'll need some space for updates, but generally not too much. GT5 has an exceptionally large install, that's not the norm. As others have said, you can always put in an HD later if you want.

For the price you pay for a HDD these days it might be worth buying a 120GB or 250GB one and installing it so you know you'll never have to worry about space. My original 120GB disc filled pretty quick just with game installs but you should be ok with a 120GB disc.

Yeah I think 250 is adequate at this point in the generation.
My 6 year old 360 elite had 120 and it lasted. It's a wheezing old toy now though, given it to the kids.

I found with the 12gb is that only maybe 10 is usable. The way it doubles the download space makes it useless for me.

All good thank you gentlemen, a dive into the official PS3 FAQ - Ask all questions in here! thread and it seems for an extra 43 I'll have a 250odd GB PS3. So 167 all in which seems good too.

Right last question, I assume if I start playing a game without the additional hard drive and then fit the hard drive later on my game saves etc will still work OK?

A few years ago I would have known all this stuff but with the family/life getting in the way I just don't have the time to keep up with all this stuff nowadays.

When you plug it in, all data will transfer automatically from the Flash drive.

    @freddymercurystwin

According to the article that Digital Foundry did earlier in the year (have no direct experience of it myself), you can just stick in the new hard drive and it will automatically copy your info from flash storage and then disable it, so it should be a breeze if you decide on upgrading.

Uncharted 3 doesn't require an install (think it sneakily caches data when you boot it up, hence the long-ish load every time you start it), so the 12Gb will serve you well for a few titles at least.

    Happy gaming! :D

Edit - what Trafford says, I went to check on the Sunday dinner while I was typing!

Take back a brand new console and buy a used one? Are you mental?
