You've probably heard the alligations of price fixing by now, but I figured this needs it's own thread as it's revealed energy suppliers held back tanks full of gas during the UK shortage two months ago, leading to wholesale prices doubling.

As if this long winter's gas bill wasn't high enough!

We really need an EU wide crackdown on corruption in companies and banks. It'll be the end of us if it's not remedied soon, it's a friggin' wild west right now.

One remedy would be to hold these CEO's and responsible shareholders personally accountable. So, prison sentences, confiscate their funds and property etc.

Exactly and no they won't get nailed to the wall. There will be some government whitewash bollocks with a pantomine of ceos going in front of ministers. Then there will be the usual shoulder shrug and a "soweeeeeee" from the ceos and maybe a penny off our monthly bills and thayt will be that.

Out of all the things the EU needs to work on, an energy policy is probably the most important.

I did this Big Deal thingy. They came back offering a more expensive tariff. Bloody marketing ploy.

Which they do for actual corruption already, despite what it may seem.

Nothing will happen. It never does. Any fine or ruling will be loopholed and passed back to us. What we need is a government run supplier, but that will never happen again... So much for competition helping the customer.

Yes, that aspect of capitalism has proven to be utterly broken, competition doesn't drive down prices, mainly because big business an immoral cesspit.

So I finally decide to see if I can save any money on my energy bills. Either on this fixed rate bollocks or by switching supplier as we've been with EDF (dual energy) since before I can remember. Best quote I can find advertises that I'd be paying £9 quid more a month if I switch to them! :D

The wife tried this via the uswitch site but had a bit of trouble so eventually went straight to our provider (eon) and froze our account and lowered our direct debit on the phone, may only save £100 over the year but better than a stab in the eye!

It's being suggested at the moment that it may be worth paying more to get into a fixed tariff deal, as prices are expected to rise even further in the coming months/years. No idea how much that is true, and how much it's energy companies trying to get more money up-front though.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

I don't even understand why private enterprise is responsible for the energy in our country, it makes absolutely no sense that something so incredibly vital is left in the hands of people who are obligated to seek as much profit as possible.

Our bloody nuclear power stations are being built and managed by the French and Chinese!

I also don't get why they say they 'have' raise prices and how '85%' of their costs are out of their control. That is a hell of a lot of profit from the remaining 15%

Ain't that the truth. Necessary public services should be delivered by the Government at cost. There's no point is considering that will ever become the case again though.

Was checking my energy usage earlier today. Apparently I'm using 50% less than this time last year (haven't put the heating on yet). I bet my fucking bill won't reflect that!

no threatening, they offered to freeze and take 1p off whatever measurements they charge which turned out to be £90-100 saving.

didn't get any more details sorry

I haven't turned on my central heating since April and when I recently sent a meter reading to N Power they wrote back saying the readings didn't reflect their 'estimates' and sent one of their lackeys over to double check.
