i want to get a really good offline racing game for ps3. Got Gran Turismo 5 and ive been playing it and though its an amazing driving Sim, its a boring racer in single player.
In gt5 there seems to be no real racing challenge as to beat a race all you have to do is buy a better car and you can beat everyone . It seems really unbalanced unless im missing something.

Anyone know any other racing games with great single player progression?

Shift 2 is decent, although I played it on PC and can't vouch for the PS3 version.

The F1 games have a great career mode, if its your thing.

Shift 2 is ace on PC But I found the low fps on the Xbox version made the handling tricky. Expect PS3 to be similar. Shift 2 does have amazing DLC track pack of historic circuits.

It's cheap as chips now though so worth a punt

I'm revisiting the original Dirt (on the PC mind) but it's heart-warming. It's got rally style levels. It's got no gymkahna. It's got mostly decent cars apart from stupid american buggies.

I'll run through Dirt 2 and then end up at lowest common denominator that is Dirt 3 & stupid showdown.

Best career game was toca race driver for the psp or geoff crammond's f1. play one of those.

I just dont understand on gt5 how i can enter races with an overpowered car and win all the events.
Where is the driving skill in that!!?? Is there no balancing. It feels pointless racing! Its all about which car you have rather than how u race! Are most other driving games like this? There shoukd be a car criteria for each race to stop this. Also upu can cut corners where ever you like with no penalty!

Only racing game I ever really go into was one on the Dreamcast where you drive around and trigger rces in the streets of a city.

Was bloody nails in places but it's the only one that has ever really grabbed me, can't remember what it was called.

Tokyo Racer, I think? Is that the one where you had to flash your lights on the highway to challenge cars to a race?

Grid is good, though be prepared to have to rewind or restart lots due to nudge happy ai.
On the plus side should be very cheap

If you restrain yourself and use cars that are slightly worse than the AI's ones, it's more of a challenge. GT4 rewarded you for that with some sort of GT points or whatever, I think you couldn't buy anything with that though.

But yes, it's a stupid system.

I still found it the best racing game, but the first DIRT wasn't half bad, even though it's pretty unrealistic. Dirt 2 and 3 sucked, but 1 was still more about rallying than showing off and fireworks.

@Shikasama Tokyo Highway Challenge/Tokyo Xtreme Racer/Shotoku Battle depending on whether you were in Europe/US/Japan. And what a fantastic game!

I'll second GRID, some awesome arcade racing, the AI feel crazy/realistic at the same time. Career progression is basic, but has some interesting twists like hiring a team-mate to race with you. Probably a fiver now, and Grid2 hits soon.
Edit - it still has the 'buy better car to win' thing.

Best single player racers by miles for me are PGR2, 3 and 4. Not played any racers at all on PS3 now I think about it...

    This post hasn't helped anyone.

Tokyo Highway Sledging. The flash to challenge mechanic was awesome. Every car weighing 75 tonnes and taking an hour to respond to steering input was less so.

MSR, PGR2, Forza Horizon, WipEout 2048.

Don't bother with GRID it's too old now and going back to it it feels very odd and unrealistic.

Shift 2 suffers from the car oscilating, however has some nice tracks.

The F1 games have decent AI and a good career but are of course only F1.

to be blunt there's an extreme lack of decent modern racing games.

I really hope GRID 2 is just as good. I think that's out end of the month too!

I still think the original Colin Mcrae rally games were all kinds of awesome. You really had to learn the courses and the handling was pretty damn good for its time. It was hard but it was fun at the same time.

    @andijames

Yes, they were among the best racing games of all back then, although I fear it's one of those cases of not having aged well if you go back to playing them.

I think Dirt 1 carried a bit of that spark over, but with Dirt 2 they lost it.

Richard Burns was an awesome rally simulation, although that of course meant it was ridiculously hard. Really for the hardcore.

I think Burns was an overrated game. Some of what made it hard was problems with the physics engine rather than accuracy.

The old McRae games were good. I remember the PC version of McRae 2 being particularly great.

I prefered Evo Studios WRC games though - WRC4 in particular was amazing. Such a shame we never got a PS3 game like that from them.

    @Maturin

Thinking about it, true, it wasn't 100% realistic, but I think no game is. I just liked that gravel and stuff was really slippery, and that you can't brake on it like it was dry tarmac.

WRC was good, I agree. Probably the best recent rally game series, despite its shortcomings.

I find it funny that even Gran Turismo replicates offroad driving so much better than very most actual offroad racers.

I cant believe how bad Gt5 is as a racing game. Its an amazing driving simulator but as a racer its shit! Weird!
Its all about buying and upgrading cars rather than driving skill. How can this not be mentioned in reviews?

Because few mainstream reviewers are really into racing games or understand them.

And GT5 is really lacking as a driving sim thanks to a lack of decent tire model. Polyphony has acknowledged this and GT6 will fix this.

@ltbobby it's been the case since the very first GT. it's only because forza has improved and things like pRace that's pushing them to rethink.

Can't comment on Supercar Challenge but Ferrari Challenge was superb with the AI on max difficulty, very lifelike. Good handling with the dualshock but the framerate wasn't great.

Arcade wise Motorstorm Pacific Rift still kicks ass, huge game with cheating bastard AI. Definitely not an easy game.

If you have even a crappy pc and want a sim then get GTR 2, it still holds up brilliantly today. Obviously the graphics are plain and the menu system is terrible but everything else still feels great. It was going for about 2 in the last Steam sale!

My recommendation is definitely NOT Motorstorm: Apocalypse.
