@monkman76 In all seriousness you and mowgli do have a point about those terms. I would be in support of a ban as they do get bandied around far too much.
Don't band me in with mowgli, he's one of the worst offenders!

Can we have a list of words that gets you permanently banned?

Although I assume posting hardcore porn in threads for kids is fine as ecosse is still here.

@craigy Great. Can this also be extended to insults that are derogatory to the disabled? Spaz, mong etc.

Oh no that's right, far too many of the old guard use them so no one can speak out against it.
He does make a good point, Craig. Seems a bit selective.
    Hm.... did someone mention hypocrisy?

edit: I should retract this, you're not actually saying you don't use those terms. Are you?

I won't use it again. It's an issue to me because dark brought it up and at the same time managed to use the word moron in hilariously hypocritical fashion.

Actually Syrette brought it up and afterwards a few other people mentioned they though it wasn't on.

Maybe you shouldn't use the way you and your social circle talk as a yard stick for how the English language as a whole has or hasn't evolved.

It would be nice to know what is and isn't okay. As I only used the word fag (again, in relation to r/atheism and I imagine a lot of the offence is because I'm taking the piss out of r/atheism and not my use of word) because I thought it was okay on EG. It is in my circles and excuse the black-friends line but I have a lot of gay friends. Also as so many other disgusting and vulgar insults are (again, as long as they aren't targeted, like the way the word fag wasn't). There are much more offensive terms than fag used by mods so you can't blame users for not being sure of the line. We now know fag is not acceptable. What else?

First the came for the racists,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a racist.

Then the came for the posters of hardcore homosexual porn,
and I didn't speak out because I didn't post hardcore homosexual porn.

Then they came for people who called people fag,
and I didn't speak out because I didn't call people fag.

Then they came for the people that call people mongs,
    And I was well fucked.

    Called it

Well at least you're honest. I just don't see why it's ignored or accepted unlike the other stuff.

    Racism =ok
Attacks on region and religious people =ok
The use of the word 'fag' = lifetime ban.

Can everyone stop spazzing up the thread like a bunch of fags and get back to ill-informed ragging on Muslims please.

I can say ragging and Muslims together, right?

@Aargh. Presumably you're talking about craigy's assertion, because any sign of racism is quite rightly jumped on by the vast majority of posters as soon as it appears.

This is patently not the case with prejudice against the disabled.

I love how right now it's still being discussed by mods whether to ban me despite saying I'll stop using the term as I didn't know it was sacred.

I find that offensive, and a gross over simplification of who I am and what I represent.

That's because no one on here has a go at disabled people as a general group, just specific individuals.

Although I thought we were on about the term fag, not disableds unless you mean gay people need our help.

You said racism=ok, which generally on these forums it absolutely isn't. I'm just making the point that the same admirable attitude doesn't apply to all forms of prejudice.

I prefer the racists to be debated with as a ban doesn't really teach them anything. In fact I suspect it's more likely to vindicate their views. I'd like to think the likes of Goodfella talk from ignorance rather than pure hatred and can be talked into understanding. Of course if it gets too bad we'd have to step in.

Likewise I would hope we wouldn't actually have to ban for use of fag/mong etc. I would much rather someone, be it you, me or whomever, would say "hey please don't use that word" and let peer pressure do its job.

    I totally called it.

See this is my point, the word fag wasn't used against gay people as a general group. It actually had nothing to do with gay people in the context it was used. Which makes it less specifically offensive and targeted than retard/mong/moron etc.

Oh and mods please don't lock the thread, there is a half decent discussion going on and pretending it isn't happening solves nothing.

This thread has lost its purpose. Why not set a new one up asking what words you can and cant use?

I agree that banning isn't the answer to any of this.

Unfortunately peer pressure doesn't work in the case of terms like spaz and mong, because the strongest pressure on EG tends to come from those who've been here longest and who tend to back each other up, and these are some of the worst offenders. (Not really referring to mowgli here of course!)
