    Hi,

I'm looking for a game similar to the old Baldur's Gate and Fallout games. Tactical sort of turn based games where you control a party.

The only similar thing I have played 'recently' is the Dragon Age game (I only played the first one as I heard negative things about the second).

    Any recommendations?

Dragon Age and its' successors are more or less the heirs to this genre. They're not perfect games, but actually not bad either - there's a lot of moaning about various aspects of the series, but they're still enjoyable.

At a push, you might include something like Mass Effect, though it's probably not what you're after as it's half RPG and half shooter. XCOM enemy unknown also is great, but not an RPG.

It's old, but have you had a crack at Planescape: Torment? If not, you would absolutely love that game if Baldur's Gate type stuff is what you're after...

re Planescape: Will it run ok on modern computers? I had problems with Baldurs Gate.

I played ME and thought it was ok. I might check out the Dragon Age sequel(s), I did enjoy the first one.

The King's Bounty games are pretty good, although they're slightly different in style to the games you mentioned. They generally get wheeled out for every Steam sale too.

If you get Planescape from Gog then it should run fine. It's regularly on sale there as well.

All the Spiderweb RPGs (Avadon, Avernum etc) are supposed to be pretty old skool turn-based affairs.

Also the new Xcom is rather good.

Controversially, I actually think Planescape is head and shoulder better than the Baldur's Gate series.

I cannot wait for the new one to come out!

If it doesn't necessarily have to be an RPG, the new Xcom game is full of turn-based tactical goodness.

I have the new XCom game and I love it. I'm looking for somehting a bit more RPGish though as I love levelling characters and fiddling around with loadouts and inventories (I like playing games when I'm high).

You should try it when you're sober - they're even better then ;)

Give Planescape a go - it should be cheap enough and you'll be able to sink hours into that bad boy.

Have you played Drakensang? Had a few annoyances, but all in all I thought it was quite enjoyable, and it has turn-based party combat. There's also an add-on/sequel, which I haven't played though. I am pretty sure there also was a demo.

@twelveways If you haven't already purchased Drakensang you could get the current Groupees bundle including Drakensang and Blood Bowl amongst others. http://groupees.com/bm8

Have to recommend the Icewind Dale games, too - also available on GOG. Think of them as Baldur's Gate with less of a focus on story and characters (You create a party of up to six from scratch), and more of a lean towards combat and exploring dungeons.

Should be ideal based on your request!
