I've just bought a new laptop. And I could do with a good printer. Nothing massively expensive but one that is quick, good quality and can scan etc. Any thoughts?

Are you going to pay for it?

Printers are ALL bastards. But I've used two HP's that weren't bad. Two epsom's that looked good but kept bugging, and a xerox that made me want to burn the office just to kill it

I'm sure almost anything from the usual suspects that's cheap right now because the next best thing has just been released will be absolutely fine. Honestly.

Any Netflix library in the world for a couple of quid a month? Gimme!

From the PC Pro A-List: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/printers/372037/canon-pixma-mg6250

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

Yeah I'm paying for it. I've rarely been all that happy with the printers that I've had hence this thread. Also I've not looked into printer buying for several years.

Buy a mediocre printer, then replace the printer with a similar model when the ink runs out; this is cheaper than buying new ink cartridges.

What about them makes you unhappy? How often will you use it, what sort of stuff do you print?

I mean to be honest my printer is a bit crap too, it leaks ink at times, doesn't at others, has a pretty inexact paper intake guide thingy, is noisy, is bulky, etc. I bought it about 5 years ago when the new model came out - I just needed to print stuff occasionally so I live with it.

Hmm. I think I spend about 40 buying a new black and a new colour cartridge together for my Canon PIXMA thingy. Can't remember how much I spent on the printer but it was under a hundred.

The "a new printer is cheaper than ink" thing is a bit of a misnomer. It's true for a few brands and models, but not for others, as most come with starter cartridges with a heavily reduced lifespan and capacity.

I'll put it this way - if it were true, the printer companies would make it so that it isn't.

If printing lots of colour stuff, go for one with separate colour cartridges, as you have to replace the whole block if one colour runs out otherwise.

Starter cartridges are shit, look for the running costs of a printer then buy one you can afford to keep going.

Separate colour cartridges are a must and ones that have individual colour print heads as well can end up getting pricey.

I have a Samsung laser printer/scanner. It wasn't expensive but wasn't cheap either. To
Get it to copy ata scale, or scan to computer is a total bastard and the image print quality ain't great.

The first cartridge started to go last week, the cyan, now the yellow this week. Looking online they are each about 50-60 bucks.

Dunno what I will do next - lots of Cash to spend on toner, and with the laser there are other bits that can go too.

What makes me unhappy about them is that something tends to go wrong. With our current one I have to disconnect and reinstall it every now and then. And it only prints from Word some things.

Get a Brother. Canon, HP and the rest are a rip-off. Brother printers don't use chipped cartridges so you can buy big packs of ink off Amazon and other third parties for a fraction of the price of the official inks.

Ok, EG Hive Mind. I need a cheap(ish) reliable and easy to use printer. Mainly B/W printing, but the occasional photo thrown in. Wifi would be really useful too.

Ideally looking to come in at about 50

    Go!

I want a b&w laser printer, just for docs and pdfs. I'm paying for it, so as cheap as possible.

I think laser is the way to go, if I can get 5,000 prints from one cartridge, then that is pretty much me for the rest of my life!

    So any ideas guys? Guys...?

Actually this thread is most helpful in this regard Small Printers
