Presumably they'll be on this like a ton of bricks.

The last thing they want is publishers being scared they'd see even less of a return compared to consoles sold.

They've got automatic updates in place now and if the Wii and 3DS are anything to go by, all new games will come with the latest firmware, but it's not like the other two consoles aren't already is the same boat. My neighbours have a dodgy Xbox and my now-Canadian mate has practically every PS3 game in existence.

It's obviously going to look worse for Nintendo at this early stage, but piracy was a major issue with the last two consoles, so they've surely focused on it this time around.

The problem for Nintendo is - Half the parents in the land knows about R4 cards and don't give a shit about pirating, and the games dont have achievements (I dont think) or any reason for 'core' gamers to want to keep their machine online.

And nintendo being nintendo will take until the Wii 3 to patch it out.
  • Deleted user 30 April 2013 14:14:51
Apparently that's not even an issue with the PS3. You can get trophies for pirated games, as long as you're not playing them online before actual release.

Edit - I'm an honest gamer though. If i'm not paying for it, i'm not playing it. You can't justify piracy.

I think people dont 'justify piracy' as much as 'dont care'.
  • Deleted user 30 April 2013 14:20:38
    Well either way...

That's not to say I haven't ever done it. But when I have, i've not really had that great an interest in what i've played.

Has the PS3 been cracked then? I didn't think it had.

So, how long before the big N manage to ban the sale of this?
  • Deleted user 30 April 2013 14:49:37
@brokenkey Sarcasm? Either way, somebody is trying to encourage me to get a PS3 for the very reason, but i've got enough to play through already.

One of the main reasons the DS sold as well as it did was that R4 cards and the like made it the easiest system to get pirated games for since the Amiga.

Might be the only thing that'll get the install base up high enough to save it.

@Popzeus I think the fact, as I say, that a LOT of parents etc now know how to pirate, and that developers are already very tentative about making
WiiU games means this piracy isnt going to 'save' the WiiU, just put the nails in.

Quite how you think piracy on a console so early in its life, with games costing millions of pounds to make, is going to save it is beyond me... please explain? You mean they'll sell of considerable more of the consoles?
  • Deleted user 1 May 2013 07:20:41
They can hack it all they want. It's got nothing worth playing on anyway...

If they hacked it so I could play wii games or GameCube games on the pad I would be all of that like a bad rash. Hell, even just the ability to us the pro controller on games!

Wii games that use the classic controller obviously, not waggle games.

No, not sarcasm. Genuine question - has the PS3 been hacked?

I think there is a distinction between downloading music/films and games. I can only see a tiny percentage of parents torrenting and burning games for their kids.
  • Deleted user 1 May 2013 09:45:54
@brokenkey Yeah. It has. My old mate is building up his trophy collection and still able to play online. He's using his PS3 as a base console for all PS1, PS2 and PS3 games I believe. Not my cup of tea though. I've held on to my old consoles for a reason.

It's not just about pirating games (although it mostly is) it's so you can install XBMC and have yet another box that runs XBMC in your living room. Except it'll have the ability to take the controller with you so you don't miss that vital action while you're taking a shit.

Have they backed this up in any meaningful way yet? I see they've posted some hexidecimal numbers on their page as evidence but I've no idea what they mean in that context. Can someone who knows about that stuff explain please?
