I'm still Trying to complete the first one on 3DS. I hear 2 and 4 are the most popular though!
So, the Virtual Console gets it's least impressive update this week. Balloon Fight and Vegas Stakes. I only mention this as Balloon Fight is now a 'Modified European Edition' that matches the speed of the US version. I'm sure few people care, but I actually quite like Balloon Fight. Hopefully the 30p adopters will be able to download the modified version of the game for free.

It feels like the Wii U's virtual console is not going to be as expansive as the Wii's. I'm actually starting to wonder whether we'll even see N64, Mega Drive, Neo Geo games, let alone GC, Saturn and Dreamcast, as some have hoped.
I wonder if licensing, for the non-Nintendo IPs, is what's holding everything back.

The offerings are frankly pathetic. I like my Wii U, I got a premium for much cheapness 2nd hand, but it's strictly a 2nd or in my case 3rd console (5th after certain preorders roll in at the end of year!), I can't imagine what it'd be like as a one and only. Some really decent VC offerings would ease the pain.
When the feck is Earthbound finally coming anyway? Played it years ago via import (and moronically sold the cart , but would like to play it again.

This week USA get Pilotwings, Japan get Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy VI, we get Vegas Stakes poker
My girlfriend is giving this a go as week speak. The graphics are very charming. Has anybody on here played it before? How big a game is it?

Never played Earthbound. Heard all about it back in the day though. Not been on my Wii U for months so might pick this up soon.

Five Reasons Why You Should Pick Up Earthbound
1. It belongs in the "Best Writing in Games" thread. It deceptively looks like nothing more than a light-hearted sci-fi comedy, but it is much, much more than that. There is nothing that has been released since or before that compares to it in anyway. It is entirely unique and most comparable to an outstanding work of children's literature. Best of all, in something truly for videogames, all of this is rather subtle and featherlight. Earthbound won't hit you in the head with its ideas, it just gently suggests all sorts of ticklish and playful meaning.
2. It has the brilliant HP roll meter system. You've probably heard of both of these before, but they are both small, but excellent innovations. HP are displayed on something like a scoreboard ticker and they roll over to display lower numbers if you get hit. If you can win the battle before they stop rolling over, your HP will stop there and you will avoid taking the entire damage. You can even avoid dying if you come up with a quick plan and get off a cure spell or a win before your HP can entirely roll down, its a brilliant take on the idea that most wounds are not instantly fatal.
3. Similarly, the game uses a symbol encounter system, which despite what is said in Simon Parkin's highly inaccurate and badly written retrospective, was pretty common even back then. The difference was that Earthbound did something interesting in regards to experience. If you were many, many levels higher than other enemies and you ran into them, the swirl that initiates combat would activate, but instead of fading to the battle screen, a pop-up would be displayed showing the gold and EXP you get from the battle, because you were just going to win the battle anyway, so the game saves the time and omits it all together.
4. There are many brilliant touches scattered throughout the game that make it really stand out. To name a few, you can get and ride a bike through a park. There is a status effect called mushroom'd that plants a mushroom on your head and you have to go get it removed at the hospital. The main character Ness has an actual distant, but relevant relationship with his mother and father throughout the game on the phone. You can order in pizza in dungeons and use condiments like ketchup and soy sauce to enhance curative food. You can buy a decoy teddy bear for enemies to beat up instead of you until it bursts into stuffing. You will at one point fight a lieutenant made out of vomit. The game's just bursting with ideas. Don't let anyone tell you the modern setting is what sets it apart -- there are plenty of RPGs with modern day settings, both back then and now, another thing Parkin gets wrong. Its the slightly crooked, warped view on absolutely everything that sets the game apart. People who love subversive games will probably find a lot to like here. And its obnoxious, attention-whore, faux-artiste subversion either.
5. It is not work of satire over all, but there are many, shall we see, interesting comments of RPGs and modern culture. The great majority of these aren't the type of easy targets you would see in other games and something even more surprising it is that the game is more than 20 years old and there are no jokes or sly commentary that fail to be relevant even today. People complained about the monkeys in the desert years ago. People still complain about those damn monkeys even today. The reason they do annoy people remains just as much of an issue, if not moreso today. Its hilarious see how Earthbound's little digs get more and more prescient as time goes on. Really, its the sign of a true classic.
Not that i've even touched Earthbound yet, can anyone recommend Breath of Fire 2? I'm a massive fan of the third one, but wasn't as well taken in by the fourth. Never played the first two.

Is SMB the 'proper' version like on the 3DS or the same as the one on the Wii with the oddly sped up music?
So if you thought gettong Golf and Tennis was great, this week we get Urban Champion and Clu Clu Land. Now, although I kinda like Urban Champion, it really is a poor game, by todays standards. I've never played Clu Clu Land though. Is that any good?

This is probably the most disappointing part of the Wii U. It's a shame that A Link to the Past still isn't available.
I am wondering what else they have left to release before the bigger named games come out.
I watched some youtube footage of Clu Clu land and found it incomprehensible! But it actually looks quite fun, possibly a pacman hybrid type of game. On the Nintendo site it says:
Released in the early days of the NES, Clu Clu Land is a unique and fast-paced action-maze game.
Manoeuvre Bubbles around the stages by grabbing posts with her outstretched hands and swinging in your chosen direction. To win, explore the whole maze to uncover all of the gold bars.
But beware! Spiky sea urchins can pop Bubbles if she touches them. Luckily, Bubbles can defend herself with an electric wave to stun her enemies. Clu Clu Land can be played solo or with a friend in simultaneous two-player mode.
Please note: Clu Clu Land on Wii U Virtual Console is the US version of the game.
So I downloaded Clu Clu land, using some of the money that Nintendo very generously hands back to me after I buy full priced download games from their e-shop
Clu Clu Land is actually a pretty fun, if fairly difficult game. You control a pacman like figure and need to navigate a matrix/maze of dots and draw a picture by swinging/revolving between the dots. Controlling your character is where the skill and challenge of the game lies. You grab onto a post and your character starts to rotate around that point. Once you let go you will continue to travel in that direction until you swing onto another post.
If that wasn't difficult enough there's a couple of enemies that chase you around, differently shaped mazes, elastics that make you bounce around and fixed whirlpools that kill you on touch. You can gain bonus points by collecting fruit, just like pac man.
To my mind retro games that are still fun to play even today are so because they focus their gameplay on one or two simple to learn but difficult to master concepts. The fun of the game lies not in the graphics but in the neverending quest to get a little better at the game each time you.
Certainly worth a punt at Ł3.49 and plays very nicely on the game pad (d pad is the better control). 15140 is my top score. I'm rubbish at games.
I saw your reply on Miiverse, too. I think i'm going to pick it up. It does look quite interesting. We'll have to get a 'friendly' high score rivalry going!
We should get some high scores going for all the VC games on this thread and Miiverse too. I totally suck at most of the retro games as the difficulty level is generally high.
What games have you picked up for the VC so far? I've not got too many that focus on high scores at the mo. The ones I can think of are Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong, Excitebike and Gradius. I've actually posted up my Balloon Fight record to Miiverse, which was very quickly bettered.
Here's my current Balloon Fight record. Not massively impressive, but it's a tough game.
Donkey Kong, Wrecking Crew, a couple of Kirby games and some of the 30p games. Probably a few others I forgot. I have loads of Wii VC/Wiiware games but rarely play them due to having to jump into Wii mode. I wish everything was integrated into the main OS.
I need to pick up both of those two. Great games! For what it's worth, doesn't holding B laugh you Wii U into Wii mode from boot up? To make things slightly quicker (If you already know what you want to play).
I forgot about the Wii boot mode. I'll probably never play around half of the Wii stuff again but there's still plenty of games I've yet to give a fair chance. I really prefer the gamepad for VC stuff, even if having to pay again is a bit of a rip off.
I think that I'll download all my Wiiware/VC stuff tonight and then decide what's permanently out and what should be on my play list. Some of the C64 stuff hasn't aged at all well. Guess that's nostalgia for you.
The only C64 I really wanted was Impossible Mission. Does that hold up well at all?

Haven't played that one but I have fond memories of it back in the day. I think I'll leave those memories where they belong.
Fair enough Curiosity might get the better of me at some point.
Super Castlvania 4 hits the eShop on Thursday. Just in time for Halloween. Do yourself a favour and get it! It's a great game that fixes the stiffness of the originals, but much like the originals has some of the best video game music of all time. It's bloomin' epic!
