    iOS 7 is brilliant.

Feels enjoyable to pick up my iPad now.

Very fresh and is exactly what was needed.

    ... the true multi-tasking is a Godsend!

Not sure true multitasking will work very well on my ipad mini with its 512mb of RAM

    Fingers crossed, hey?

You'll likely pass on (or sell) your iPad mini for the new one come December anyway!

... I still have a strong feeling that we won't see a Retina screen on the mini this year.

The battery inside the iPad covers the whole blooming device and it just about manages eight or nine hours under steady and non-excessive usage. A smaller device with a smaller battery and a Retina screen is surely a tall ask?

    We shall see.

What's this "true multi-tasking" stuff? I thought it's still exactly the same, you switch between apps, but the switcher just looks a bit fancier now?

Any Netflix library in the world for a couple of quid a month? Gimme!

I think the idea is that stuff can actually stay open in the background and do proper things like download whilst you are in another app.

I'm so getting a new ipad mini in December :-)

But stuff can already stay open in the background (as long as it's one of the permitted kinds of application anyway). I thought it was just an improved switcher too!

Has the horror of Maps been improved at all?

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

The browser is still a ballache. No way of making a webapp go fullscreen. No... good way, at least.

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

? I quite like the Maps interface. What's wrong with it? If you mean the issues with the actual map data themselves, they've been steadily improving them since Maps came out - since the data isn't stored on the device, this isn't tied into a new release of iOS. Anyway, google still has some issues here in Geneva - in many ways Maps was better! It really depends where you are ...

Edit: Maps is still utter gash at search - maybe that's what you meant? It drives me nuts when I search for something in Geneva, and the top results are in the US.

    Yup.

... since beta 6 landed upon the doorstep a few days ago, it has been blissfully wonderful.

For those who are still on iOS 6, you are in for quite a nice treat indeed!

The 'true' multi-tasking is a Godsend.

Can someone please explain to me what the functional, practical difference is between the app-switching in 6 and the app-switching in 7?

I just don't see anything other than a cosmetic makeover - which is nice, don't get me wrong, but other than aesthetics in what way is it a godsend?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but 7 will allow more apps to run in the background, so as an example, you could load something up in YouTube then switch to your Facebook and the audio from YouTube will continue playing. Currently that isn't the case.

I know a lot of apps stop working when they are they not active on iOS so I imagine with 7 that will change allowing for apps to update in the background without you needing to manually update.

Is there any tentative release date for 7 yet? A friend of mine at work got the beta from a friend and it looks lovely, can't wait to get my hands on it myself.

    TRUE MULTI-TASKING!

... meaning whatever you were presently doing on an open App, be it editing a document, viewing a website, doing a drawing or playing a game and so forth, it shall stay on the same place/point as you left it. Thus, no more reboots or refresh of said App; they stay in their natural state, which the 'multi-tasking' on iOS 6 was very hit and miss with, mostly miss.

    This explains your query?

Must be a limitation on the number though?

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

Youtube is not a good example, since it seems to be a conscious design decision to pause when you switch to something else - note how youtube replaces the music player in the bottom bar and you can unpause it from there, staying in the other application (it's so cumbersome it makes no sense, though).

But yes, the idea seems to be that apps may continue operating more or less normally when in the background, to the user's enjoyment and to the battery's faster depletion.

    @mrpon

Memory is the limitation. As before, apps will get unloaded as new ones are opened.

Yeah, same for me. iPhone 4 and iPad mini, I wonder how 7 will work on them.

Would think the GM will release on the 10th with the announcement of the new iPhone, then general release the week after probably.

Ooh, I skipped the betas so the GM is my first foray into iOS7! Me like! Home screen is as Fisher Price as I feared, but in all other regards it looks gorgeous and fresh.

As a beta user myself with no computer (at present) to use iTunes, can I just wait until the official iOS 7 day and download it wirelessly onto my iPad ... or am I still required to connect to I-blooming-Tunes?

    Ta.
