Not much cop these days really.

Are the Japanese developers even relevant any more?

    Relevant to what?
I'll take The output of Nintendo, Platinum, Capcom, From Software, Namco etc. than Western shite like Call of Duty and Battlefield any day.

You keep pulling those games out like they're the only games the West has made, while in another thread:

Considering the population of Japan measured against the population of the rest of the game-making world, I think that Japan is disproportionately well represented. :)

They are also responsible for games that nobody else in the west can or wants to make... So... Yes! They are still relevant.

    Nope.

I don't think Japan has been relevant to the games industry since 2D sprite games kicked the bucket. No depth, no soul, no story that can't be bettered by a 12 year old girl, nothing to set one game apart from the next aside from genre, it's just an endless slew of souless, repetitive nonsense aimed at the gender confused, people with OCD or people who have never had a real friend. Pretty much Japan in a nutshell.

The west has soared ahead and while there are obviously some shit titles that are aimed squarely at the mainstream there's such a vast array of genres and styles that it's long since overtaken all else. While a lot of early Japanese gaming ideals remain such as playability, most have long since been bettered, while the quality of Japanese titles have dived into a ditch.

There's no flip flopping at all, there are amazing games from Japanese and Western developers.
What is tiring is the complete dominance of endless shooting in most big budget Western games these days.
Every game wants to be either a CoD, Gears or Uncharted clone.

Gears clone? Uncharted? CoD? Go on, name 5 for each or even any one if it's 'every game'.

Seems to me you just talk out of your arse constantly because you either haven't got a clue or you're simply trying to have a go for the sake of it. Either way, your opinion isn't worth a shit.

Meh, I lost interest in FPSes as soon as they introduced 'look up/down', and I've never seen the attraction of embedding gameplay in a sandbox, so about a quarter of my collection this gen is Japanese. Helps that I still like scrolling shooters (though I wish they made something other than bullet hell shooters these days).

Course, that's on my 360. My handheld library is a lot more Japanesey, I'd guess, though I've not checked. If I had a Wii/U that'd be too I suppose.

Gears- Inversion, Quantum theory, Mass Effect2, Dead Space 3, Space Marine
Uncharted - Tomb Raider, Enslaved, cantthinkofmore just now.
Cod - Homefront, Battlefield, crysis 2, Resistance 3, kill zone 3

You do get my point, to be a successful big budget Western game you have to involve endless bloody slaughter.

None of those are clones unless you're trying to suggest that genres are the same game over and over again. Battlefield is like cod? No. Mass effect is like gears?

    Desperate and superficial choices all.

War games in particular are a cultural thing, just like preteen upskirting games are in Japan.

Still think Bayonetta is one of the best games I've ever played. The rest of the Platinum games output is superb. He'll, I'd even consider buying a Wii U once they release a few games for it.

There are a few studios that can still do it.
Cave, Atlus, Grasshopper, Level 5, Team Ninja, Sony Japan, Capcom, From Software, Sega (sometimes) and probably a few others. Including Nintendo of course. That's just off the top of my head.

Yes they may turn out endless sequels but they are willing to take more risks and not fire the entire staff if the title doesn't sell 5 million copies. Even though I didn't like ICO and found SOTC a tad frustrating, these are the sort of games you'd never get made as Western titles. Say what you want about Capcom and their micro transactions but their fighting game engines are fucking superb.

If you're strictly talking Mario, Poke and Bollocks then to some degree yes. Never played a Poke and don't want to. The only Bollocks I've been anywhere near this gen is Ni No Kuni which is waiting to be played. As for Mario, I think if you take each franchise separately then they are some of the best games ever made. Although I hate the Wii with a vengeance, I found Galaxy 1 & 2 great fun to play.

Great games can come from anywhere and I think there are just as many good ones on all formats as there ever were. However, it does seem that quite a lot of the time, the best games are not hits.

The way things are console wise, Sony seem to be taking the most risks with new ips on the PS3. PC wise though where you have a lot more choice and more indie games etc then yes there's a lot more room for innovation.

Are Jap developers still relevant? Of course they are if they produce great games. Quick look through the top 50 games of all time on Metacritic shows that a vast majority of them are Western (would you expect anything different though?). They do also cross all kinds of different genres. iOS has changed a lot of things too.

However, Jap developers cater to their tastes and lifestyle. I couldn't imagine getting on a bus/train and getting my Vita out and playing Monster Hunter on it with some random stranger.

I still do enjoy playing Japanese games, particularly from the likes of Capcom and Platinum. But the real innovation is coming from western devs. Japanese titles tend to be more... traditional in their story and mechanics. Ironically I've noticed the only time they do try to change things up is when they try to westernise their games and avoid the stagnation of the Japanese games market. It speaks volumes that the best Japanese games are the ones doing just that.
