I really like the look of this- it's like a cross between Zelda 2, Castlevania and Megaman. They are aiming for a September release by the look of it. Out on PC and WiiU too, if you pledge, you get to choose which download code you want on release, but it's $15 for the 3DS/WiiU rather than a minimum of $10 for PC due to licensing. Seems reasonable.|
Nearly halfway funded too, with 27 days left to go.
It's the only Kickstarter I've ever chipped into, its made by ex-Wayforward staff and they made some of my favourite games of recent years, so I'm looking forward to seeing what Yacht Club games can do- there is some great artwork, music and gameplay videos available already.
Bonus points for Shoveller quotes from Mystery Men
Anyway, whatever you think of Kickstarter, I think this is one of the most interesting eshop projects I've seen for a while.

Shovel Knight- Kickstarter project by ex-WayForward staff, now on 3DS!
Pageof 2 First / Last
Manami Matsumae, original composer of Mega Man, is now working on this!
This is probably the game I'm looking forward to most this year.
I'm interested, but not completely sold. It does sound rather good though. Hasn't it reached it's goal now?
This was the first kick starter I've ever pledged to, I'm really looking forward to it. I'm glad it's at least got the new game +, everything after that's a bonus.
Yeah, it's gone ballistic- it'll probably hit twice it's goal, there's still a week to go. Currently it's digging through the stretch goals- playable boss knight etc.
20 minute preview of the demo from PAX
I love the nods to previous 8-bit games, while still retaining an identity of it's own- rather than living on nostalgia (like 3D Dot Game Heroes) this appears to be going out of it's way to update and streamline 8-bit mechanics. For example, you don't have lives, but you lose half your gold when you die. You need gold to buy upgrades, but they aren't mandatory at all. Nice and simple, while updating the '3 lives' anachronism. Looks like there's lots of hidden treasure in the levels too.
Sony has also contacted them now- it's looking like it's going to be on PSN and XBL as well as 3DS, PC and WiiU.
The Yacht Club Games team are the old Wayforward guys that made Contra 4 and Double Dragon Neon, so they've got a good pedigree for this kinda stuff.

Thanks to some promotion from internet gaming celebrities, Shovel Knight passed it $180,000 stretch goal and will now have a challenge mode. It's looking very likely it will pass the $200,000 goal for a 4-player battle mode as well. Past that, who knows?
I hope this comes to Japan. We haven't been very lucky with WayForward's games, so here's hoping Yacht Club finds a way to get it over here.
It looks like they guaranteed EU and US release on their Kickstarter page. Why not ask them? They seem like a friendly bunch and reply to questions often.
I already did and received a reply saying they couldn't promise anything, but it was great to hear from fans in Japan and they'd see what they could do. It was a long and detailed e-mail. I was so surprised that someone took the time to reply to me in that much detail.
Now you know how most of us feel when you reply on here
Bloody hell they are up to $230,000 with 3 days to go!

And they made it, $300,000 and all stretch goals met!
This looks like its been delayed to winter rather than September now. Bit of a shame but if it lets them polish it before release, that has to be a good thing.
I'm sure it'll be worth the wait. It's looking mighty good.
This is out today on steam and wii u and 3ds. Still looks great and ign gave it at 9 but the review read like a 7

@BeebleB Only on steam in the UK however... Only out on 3DS and Wii U in the states currently.
Posted this elsewhere:
Nintendo Life (Wii U) 9/10
Nintendo Life (3DS) 9/10
Kotaku: Highly Positive
Hardcore Gamer: 4.5/5
PC version for me then, well done Nintendo once again, nicely diverting funds away from your platform. Would have bought the Wii U version ideally, heyho.
What's Nintendo done?
Just seen this on steam. It's £10.99 :/
played half an hour and its awesome..lots of secrets, hard boss fights and the music...
10 pounds seems steep for a NES game but if it encourages them to make more games like this then I'm down.

$14.99 on GOG.com, which should work out to under £10 at the moment.

It's just I'd like to buy the Wii U version, but as so often happens with a lot of things on Nintendo's platform there seems to be an interminable wait for everything. They've probably got little/zip to do with Shovel Knight's release, but I wish they'd whip up some momentum where the eshop is concerned.

Ah, right. I thought they had screwed up lol.
No, just me being whingy upon realising I wouldn't be getting the Wii U version, heh, sorry!

When the heck is this out in the EU?
It's on Steam but come on, this is a console game!
They did a blog post a short while ago stating what situation they were in with the European release. From the sounds of it, it'll be a little way off yet.

I was wondering what happened to the EU release of this last night.
I had a kickstarter update from Yacht Club Games this morning: EU/Aus release of Shovel Knight will be in November, but they don't have an exact day yet.
Presumably there are only so many dates it could be if they are bound to the usual eshop update schedule.
Nintendo seem to have loosened up their strict release schedule on the eShop. At least in North America, anyway. Over there you can now release a game on any weekday, it would seem. Although for familiarity's sake, you're probably going to attract a lot more attention if you're a part of the Thursday update.
this looks tits imo.
