Yeah, has been for a week or two. Gallingly cheaper than the Kickstarter price. :-/

I kind of disapproved of cdkeys in the past - or didn't know/still don't know how legit they are.

But these days, I am more inclined to think the fuckers all wanted the digital revolution and globalisation, now it's not really my problem.

Still would like to see a serious journalistic attempt to explain these super-cheap key sites.

CDKeys aren't "super cheap" I think? There are other, far more dubious, suppliers that are silly prices. CDKeys are, to the best of my knowledge, entirely legit? Perhaps that wasn't always the case.

Or, to put it another way, I've bought PC stuff for myself, and console stuff as gifts for people, for the last two or three years from them and nothing has been revoked.

@Phattso Could be that there are cheaper ones, I never really looked into it. I'd still say they are often extremely cheap though, with brand new games often costing less than 50% of what they cost on Steam (RE7 currently, for example).

    edit:
RE7 is a bad example, it "only" costs 50 EUR on Steam, not 60. Still, 28 on cdkeys.

You could just as easily ask how companies can afford to to 50% sales and the like. It's all imaginary money, innit. I'd imagine CDKeys or whomever buy a bulk package of keys for a set price. Publisher gets effectively a bunch of preorders, without paying Valve 30%, and PC gamers potentially get cheaper games.

The usual sequence with CDKeys is for a game to be available to preorder a few months from release for £25-27, which creeps up to a more standard £32-35 as release approaches. It's not just magically super-cheap all the time. If a game flops, like Mafia 3, then CDKeys usually discount heavily to at least recoup some of their loss on that. Mafia 3 followed the same price (25-35) around release, and then dropped down to £15 after it bombed.

    Just like retail, really.

Also, let's be honest, Steam prices for brand new games are among the highest. I wouldn't use that as a benchmark.

@Phattso Yeah, maybe. I actually have used them a few weeks back to buy the latest Lego Star Wars for the nephew/niece. What surprised me is that I got a code that was obviously scanned, so I thought they buy boxed copies en masse in cheaper countries?

It's pretty much the standard price in Germany. You don't really save money, whether you buy in a multimedia store, on amazon, or an indie shop.

That's a good game to use as an example then - because when I first got this new PC last March I bought that game from CDKeys and it cost me £20. Today it's £4. So, as I say, not always automatically super cheap. :)

Some appear to be code scans, others not. It's possible they did buy them en masse from another territory. If that were in Europe it's not a problem, I'd say? And if it were from Russia, or something like that, you'd imagine Valve would revoke them?

If they're from another country in the European Union, then it is indeed not a problem, no. It gets fishy when they're from outside though, because that means they/you as a customer are running in all kinds of legal trouble, in theory.

What I have noticed is that some key sellers - gamesplanet.com, for example - call themselves "authorised key sellers", but their discounts are significant smaller than those of cdkeys.com and the like.

And as far as Playstation games are concerned, they seem to sell accounts rather than games?

It's all a bit confusing and exactly why I'd like to read a well-researched article. :)

Aye, it'd be interesting to know where it's coming from also. My own confidence comes from the fact that Valve aren't a charity, and they do revoke keys, so the fact they haven't revoked mine gives me a certain amount of confidence that the keys aren't legally dubious.

@UncleLou To briefly change subject, any chance of a title fix?

Oh. Mild spoiler alert (I say mild because they are apparently a cameo more than part of the story): there is a recurring character from Planescape who crops up.

Unfortunately, it's not Morte. I did ask.

Oh, I also asked if there are Monty Python and the Holy Grail jokes, given that Colin was the lead on Fallout 2. Apparently there are "way too many".

I appear to be the last person in the Kingdom of Kickstarter to realise that even my standard backer pledge has gotten me access to the beta, which I could've been playing for a while now. D'oh! Fired it up at the weekend, and it's an interesting opening.

I'm more at home with this, it being built on the Pillars of Eternity tech, than I thought I would. Everything is different, but also pleasingly familiar in the hands. Clickety-click.

Not sure how much to play of the beta, as a lone post by some random on the Steam forums says that save games won't transfer over. Given how much reading is involved in the game - and holy cow, if I thought Pillars was wordy this is on another level - it might grate a second time through in such quick succession.

Anyone else spent time in the beta?

@Phattso I only found that out myself a week or two ago catching up on the backer updates.

To be honest I'd rather just wait to play the full game, especially this close to release.

I was like a kid at Christmas, just couldn't wait! :D

After wrapping up Pillars of Eternity I tried to move on to Wasteland 2 but couldn't quite get into it - wanted a preview of Torment to see if it tickled my fancy any more, and it absolutely did, so Wasteland 2 - nice as it was - is back on the pile for now.

Yeah, I've also not given Wasteland 2 a go yet but want to play Torment and other games first. I also really want Tyranny.

Too many RPGs and not enough time!

I am trying to get Tyranny finished ready for this. Should be doable. Been enjoying the backer novellas to get a feel for the flavour of the new setting. (Tyranny's weren't too bad too and most of those are free on their official website). Only dabbled a little with the beta and like people have said at this stage I will wait for the full release.

Huzzah, the long wait will soon be over!

Got it pre-ordered on GoG so looking forward to 6pm tomorrow after work and diving in.

Not read anything personally other than promotional gumph, I'd have thought there would be review copies floating around so fingers crossed some reputable publication will put something out sooner rather than later.
