but there is indeed an actual taboo (in UK) of horse-eating.
So what does that have to do with your thread title?

If the rat had been subject to the same health and safety regulations as a packet of tesco chicken, by all means get moving on those rat burgers.

Is the point sinking in yet?

Oh I'm not. I'm just wondering why there is a gulf between:

Your thread title and your opening post.

Your opening post and the real problem with the horsemeat scandal.

Your opening post and your following musings on deer.

Your thread title and your responses to me.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Funnily enough (or not), I read today that an alarming amount of curry has beef rather than lamb in it because its cheaper. Obviously not ideal for curry loving hindus.
Why, is beef some kind of sacred cow to Hindus?

The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

Can't remember who said it, but my favourite quote on this topic is "If we weren't supposed to eat animals, why are they made out of meat?"

    Is it poisonous?

If the answer is 'no' then it's fit for consumption.

    @anthonypappa

What exactly was proven and by whom? We still don't know where the meat is from, what the animals original purpose was and to what extent the contamination of mass produced food of mystery meat the there has been - and for how long it's been in the system.

Questions are still unanswered so nothing's been proven no matter what Murdoch's news machine tells you to think.

because of the horsemeat scandal, and another forum, where dogs are on the menu, i thought of this soul searching topic.

i have narrowed it down to:

an animal cannot be eaten if, it:

seems to have a soul; connects with human beings.
    is magnificent, like a horse
is too cute, like a koala bear.

and everything else is fair game it seems!

We should start eating Panda to annoy the Chinese who eat fucking anything with no interest in sustainability or how they slaughter them in horrible ways. Pandas don't seem to give a fuck about surviving either.

Dog is actually pretty nice, I've tried plenty of 'strange' meats/foods, mostly just for the novelty but sometimes because that is just what was widely available. Donkey, Camel and Dog are probably my favourites after beef.

I live in China now so I take it for granted that when I order beef I am probably eating rat or cat but, to be honest, as long as it is cooked properly and tastes ok then I don't mind.

Weirdest food I ever tried is balut, Filippino unhatched chickens, you can order it depending on what stage of development you want, the oldest ones have feet and beaks. Probably won't try that again.

Anyway, my point is that what is considered as taboo varies wildly from society to society, many asians I meet are disgusted by the idea of black pudding.

You're all failing to address the bigget issue with this thread:
    What is the standard criterium...
    What are the standard criteria...

Unless you do it differently in English. If so you can ignore this post.

Should be "criterion" for English folk, although I'm wondering if AP is just trying to find a new ingredient for his crispy pancakes ;)

    3 Criteria

    1- is it non-poisonous
2- will eating it get you killed / sick in some other way ? (eg: Canibalism has a host of problems but I wouldn't class Human as poisonous...)
3- Does it actually taste good ? I'd eat a Panda burger, but it'd be a real shame to go to all that trouble if it tasted shit...
