I may well pick that deal up. How does tropico compare to SimCity games?
Different enough. You build different houses etc instead of zoning. The politics part seems to actually be the most interesting part as you maintain relations with the US and USSR, and deal with rebels etc.

I had a good time with Anno 2070 after getting it in the Steam sale at Christmas. It has crappy Ubisoft DRM though, so if that's a reason you don't want the new Sim City it might not be much better for you.

This could be the cure to those SimCity pains - Civitas. It's a Kickstart project being developed by some of the ex. THQ devs who, obviously, needed something new to do. Could be a winner. Could be a pile of shit though. I'm hoping for the former....

Well thanks to the new Sim City I have rediscovered the excellence of Sim City 4, and found although Tropico 4 isn't a massive improvement on 3, there's still a lot of cool stuff to do.

Although I was gutted when this happened :(

Why wasn't this thread created years ago? I love management games.

Pharaohs great as well, did anyone mention Pharaoh?

My other half is always going on about that, prefers it to Caesar. I think it is on GOG, may treat her to it as a present.

I have Anno 2070 but only got as far as booting it up, realising the font was ridiculous on my front room TV and noticing that I couldn't just casually jump in and faff about.

    Anno 1404!
So very much yes, it's annoying that it's not available on steam but you can find it relatively easily elsewhere. IMO it's quite a bit better than 2070, not that the new one is a bad game, 1404 is just great. I'm tempted to re-install 1404 but it'd be a very bad idea, I still cringe at remembering the "you have been playing for 4 hours, you should take a break" messages, it's management crack.

I've plonked down $50 to Civitas. It sounds interesting, the tech sounds nice, and I'm all for supporting anyone that puts up the middle finger to DRM, and it's not as though the genre is exactly over-saturated atm.

That logo is very Maxis-looking though.

I've bought Zeus. That's the newer one (2000/2001) vs Cleopatra (1999). And Caesar was 1998 for anyone that cares. Newer still is Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom (or "Caesar goes to China") which is 2002, but that's not on GOG. Think it has a big fanbase though.

By the way just over 3 hours left in the sale.

Edit: Just bought Zeus as well. For 3.46 would be mad not too. Good for teaching kids these games too (or that's my excuse anyway).

Now to find out none of it runs on my hillbilly combination of machines. Even though it ran perfectly fine 10 years ago.
I've got a whole heap of unplayable Steam/Humble Bundle games. (They're so cheap I can never resist! I'm like a penniless crack whore, with trousers full of crack and no functioning pipe...ahem).

You guys might be interested in hearing about here that show off the building grammar at work.

Here's a neat one showing a Pompeii reconstruction.

You can run a city over a time period and let it be affected by transportation and demographic data though that's a little hard to do right now i'm led to believe. The idea is based upon zoning building parcels get redeveloped over time leading to skyscrapers etc.

I know it's not strictly according to the thread but I wanted a good RTS game. My laptop is fairly new but not very powerful.

I had Shogun years ago and wanted to redownload that but it's not on Steam. Can I get it anywhere else? Not really wanting to get a pirate version. Tried Shogun 2 but my laptop chugged like a bastard. So either where can I get Shogun 1, or is there a good game like it you can recommend? Used to love Command and Conquer so anything like that is fine.

Not in UK so it has to be a download.

Anno 2070 is pretty good, aside from all the uplay bullocks. Think the drm has now been removed.

Thank You thread, you have reminded me that i have Tropico sat somewhere in my bloated steam library.

I think just the perfect thing in between stressful Rift raiding and even more stressful Starcraft matches.

Known as 'Sharzam' in 98.5% of games

Have to say tropico 4 is a lot more fun than the 3rd one which I got annoyed at rather quickly and definitely scratches that city building itch I had. That said it is rather easy to make money, build factory click on allow imports on the factory screen, money is made.

Is this a whole different "thing" to Civ 5? Tempted by the Tropico 4 bundle but I just bought, but haven't started Civ yet. I wouldn't want anything too similar.

In Tropico you are the leader of a banana republic on a Caribbean island. Dealing with ungrateful gits who can't see that El Presidente is doing everything for the betterment of his people, even the syphoning of funds to his Swiss bank account is for everyone's benefit. Well his. It's played in real time.

Civilization you're running an empire on a, usually randomly generated, world map from ancient times until the nearish future, it's turn based.

Other than they're both strategy games they're really not that similar in anyway.

    This space left intentionally blank.

I would actually liken Tropico more to Theme Park as you place buildings (rides, shops in TP) and try to keep your citizens (visitors) happy in the face of a limited budget and crazy events.
