The best "Sim City" game that isn't Sim City

So reading all about Sim City has given me that itch. No, not that itch, the itch to play a town/city/country building game.

Problem being is that between the always on issues, the city size issue and the price EA are asking for the game I've been put right off.

I have Sim City 4 and Tropico 3, but what would YOU guys recommend?

    Not Cities XL

It has that annoying feeling of having all the right ideas, but being a degree out on the execution of all of them.

Stick to Sim City 1 to 4. Two maybe the most interesting stylistically. Cities XL is passable but didn't hold my attention for more than a week.

I liked Caesar 3, old but great fun and an excellent soundtrack. Can get it on GOG.

Have a look through this list:

Not strictly a city builder but Transport Tycoon (or rather OpenTTD). It's very satisfying to see cities grow thanks to the transport network you created. Also, Anno 2070 is apparently quite good.

On that note actually, anyone got anything good to say about Cities In Motion? And the Anno games for that matter...

Another vote for Caesar 3. I'll also throw in Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom but heaven knows where you'll get that now

Zeus: Master of Olympus was brilliant (made by the same guys who did Caesar, Pharoah, etc). It took the city-building gameplay of the others in the Impressions series but added in things such as worshipping the Greek gods to gain their favour, completing mythical quests (such as the Labours of Hercules), etc.

    Caesar 3 is my favourite.

What's up with SimCity Societies? I think that's the title...

IIRC it's meant to be a bit crap. It moves the focus from building cities to managing social policies.

It's very simplified compared to what you expect of Sim City.

Cities in Motion was quite good. Made my Mac grind a bit. but was fun. More a transport sim than a city sim though. A more polished OpenTTD

    Seconded for open TTD.

Tropico 4 was fun (though apparently not too different to 3 which I've never played). A little shallow in places but with a good heart.

SC4 with mods is a whole different game to vanilla these days.

I've got to be honest, I just loaded up Sim City 4 again. It's still good.

I do have cities in motion if you have some questions about it however it's not a city builder it's a public transport game, Sim City 4 is still the one I'd go for.

It's not particularly a city-builder, but I rather liked Startopia - building a space station to ensure you were meeting the needs of the various alien species on board was always fun, and it had a good sense of humour.

Seeing as CiM was touted (and yes, it's fun) if the transport angle floats your boat may also be worth considering A-Train 8.

I may well pick that deal up. How does tropico compare to SimCity games?

Great topic! Caesar 3 was brilliant. I remember it came with a thick manual (used to love them) and in one of the stats tables at the back was the typo "What the fuck is all this shit". Ha ha awesome!

So recommend that. Also Openttd is pretty perfect with ECS mods/newgrfx files installed (hard with those mods though, but they greatly expand the depth). They have to be installed in a particular order so check the openttd wiki (worth it though).

Fancy looking into the olympus game thingy mentioned. But i'm stuck with either a weak W7 acer one netbook, or a better i3 notebook with Ubuntu. Hard to get anything to work on either of them though.
