You kill them in order to carve bits from them - hides, claws, tusks etc.|
Those materials can then be used to craft better weapons and armour which then allow you to face tougher monsters.
I played through it on Wii and really got into it once I got the idea of understanding the strengths and weaknesses of differing monsters, and knowing what items were needed to craft various weapons and armour - there's a great wiki that has all the charts and tables.
Online play was also great fun - teaming up with more advanced EGers to take down a Deviljho, or to go hunting a Jhen Moran in a special event.

Hoping it breathes new life into the group too! 'Twas fun back in the day
I'm resisting the urge to jump back into Freedom Unite at the moment so this feels nice and fresh.
I just couldn't get into MHFU on PSP.
Thanks for that explanation, I'll have another go at the demo again tonight to see if it clicks. Also having read on the previous page that you can "lock on" to monsters should help my camera problems
Btw, did anyone else notice the typo in the thread title?
Don't you mean the thead title?
Thead one yeah
Ah, fixed. Nice!

We are watching you.
I'm getting more into the demo but hoping that the issues I have with it will be ironed out for release.
It's mainly the lock on I keep hearing about that just doesn't work for me. I get the symbol on the touchscreen but nothing happens upon pressing L.
The map looks a lot easier to use from the EG stream so that's a non issue now.

Does the 3DS have online MP? Cross play with the WiiU version too?
How is the online stuff on the 3DS in general? Might be the game worth buying one to play as my Wii was with MH3 first time round.
No online on 3DS, but yes on cross platform play. It's a shame they didn't make online play a priority, though understandable given they sequel has it. They do have a plan for routing play through a Wii U, much like PS3 can do for some PSP games, but it seems silly given you can just buy the Wii U one.

So I'm thinking of going halves with my girlfriend on a 3ds MH bundle and the I'm going to buy the WiiU game.
Can we both play online together or does the 3ds involvement scupper connectivity?
We're both really into the demo so this could be a good game to play together, albeit expensive.
I'd rather 2 gamepad support co-op for the WiiU edition although I have wanted to get a 3ds at some point.

@AdamAsunder You would both be able to play together but not online.
Boo. Ah well, two player it shall have to be then.
You can play local multiplayer with 2 3DSs. Why don't you both get the 3DS bundle, then you could play anywhere! (together )

Because that would be close to £400!
I think buying one 3ds bundle and the WiiU game is pricey enough.
Oh I see, i misunderstood, you already have the wii-u!
Reviews are starting to come in.

EG Review is up on the front page.
Aye, I've been at work so couldn't update further.
Needless to say, I'll be grabbing myself a copy and maybe a MH3ds with the better half.

Well, i've decided to pick this up on the WiiU, despite not knowing anything about the series at all.
I tried the demo and had absolutely no idea what was going on, hopefully the full game will have a decent tutorial or at least a hefty manual.
There should be no worries there, MH Tri had a pretty decent starting section that eases you in slowly. Indeed, that seem to be a complaint for existing players who end up having to do the tutorial stuff twice.

Dipped into this on the Wii U this evening, still in the tutorials but it's already explained more than the last MH game I played.
If anyone else gets it on Wii U hit me up, my tag is Aphex666.
Played about 9 hours of this yesterday. Still absolutely glorious. We'll have to get the old MH3 Wii gang back together for some online action.
It's also the type of game miiverse was created for.
Bloody hell. Zavvi got it to me for release day!
Picked it up on 3DS at lunch time. All the memories came flooding back.very impressive and now I just need some 3DS owning friends to go hunting with.
My copy from Amazon has been a no-show so far.

My copy is on its merry way.
I am looking forward to play with the EG crowd again. I have had dozens of hours of great hunts with you people.
P.S. is it just me or is it impossible now to join any groups. While I can access and see all the ones I am already in, I can't find any of the other groups anymore, much less request to join it.

Torn over getting this on Wii U or 3DS. The other half will get it on 3DS. I played the 3DS demo this morning and I had cramp in my left hand by the end. But I rather like the idea of having it portable.

Got this and loving it so far. Played a fair bit on wii already, but not sure how to join a group with folk from EG who know what they are doing more than me. Does anyone know what the wii u online ID is so I can put it on here and join up with you guys?
@Agent_Llama Hmmm. Put in about 5 hours so far and not had any problems with cramp in my hands on the 3DS.
