Good times! You'll almost forget there is a games drought on the Wii U. Almost. 80 hours in and apparently i'm not even half way through the quest.

Nice one Binks. It's a great game. I'd love to do an EG hunt or two now that a few have got the game now.

There was quite an MHTRi community here a few years ago. It was brilliant.

I'd definitely be up for some MH U.

Yeah I'd be up for a bit of online fun once I've learned (some of) the ropes. I'm a bit of a late night gamer though - family commitments and what not - so I don't tend to get on until after 21.30 of an evening. Is it the sort of game you can just drop into online, or do you have to be there from the quest start?

    Couple of noob questions -

How do I empty my bags of junk before each quest & where?

Where can I buy potions & herbs from?

I just played through the demo on the 3DS.
Quite liked it, but the demo itself is pretty sparse. If I hadn't played MHTri for >200hrs I wouldn't have had a clue what to do.

Not sure whether to get this on the 3DS though. Will the Circle Pad Pro make a difference? The lack of online play puts me off a bit, and I'm not sure that I will be picking up a WiiU anytime soon...

I can see why you wouldn't like the 3DS demo - it pretty much just dumps you into a hunt with no direction on what to do.
I failed the first time (ran out of time), but managed it the second. This was the giant rabbit hunt.
I could feel the old skills and frustrations coming back. The sound effects evoke many memories as well.

Is there someone out there who is playing this on 3DS who can comment on what the full game is like?

Hey Alastair, good to see you, luckyjim and Cid from our old hunting team on here!

I find it really good- the city has a better layout than the Wii version, and the lock-camera-on-monster, combined with centreing camera behind me commands, makes it simple enough- after an hour or so I was hunting as usual. Am contemplating getting a pro XL circle pad though, and would live to hear from anyone that uses one.

Lack of online play makes it tough for beginners to the series though- playing with others is the best way to learn, and also to improve, and while I put 200+ hours into tri online, I put only about 40 into offline, as I loved the humour and sense of achievement/failure that came with quest results, and watching people prance around showing off their new armour and weapons etc.

Obviously, I still think it's a great game, but I understand if it seems mystifying to beginners- online play really teaches you how to hunt effectively, cuts quest time down, shows how to get good resources quickly etc, its a much lower learning curve and alleviates a lot of frustration. By the end, I loved showing newbies what to do too- watching them charge into the water after Gobul while we laid half a dozen traps by the side of the lake, and threw a fishing line with a frog down into the water instead! Good times. Really looking forward to MH4, hopefully we get that next year.

All in all, it's a good monster hunter fix, with lots more single player content and less repetition than Tri, so if you only really play offline, it's good stuff.

Cheers for the heads-up redcrayon. :)

I played the SP through to defeating the big white thingy in the water cavern... But as you say learning online (mainly from Cid!) really helped a lot. Also, some of the internet resources like that wiki page that explained the armour and weapon trees, plus the elemental powers really made a difference.

From your short write up it sounds like I would enjoy this, so maybe I'll suggest it for Father's day/birthday. ;)
I can always get a Circle Pad later.

MH4 you say?? If that's on WiiU then that really could be the thing that makes me get one - I guess the price will be lower by then.

@Wolves1877 To answer each of you questions. You should have a chest in your hut, which you can access from the centre of town. It's just at the bottom of the steps that lead up to the blacksmith.

You can buy herbs at the shop that appears below the Guild Quest counter and left of the fishing lady.

And to make Goldenfish bait you need both Snakebee Larva and Mega Fishing Fly

You can. You need to download a particular app from at least the 3DS eShop. Maybe the Wii U one as well. I'm sure there's a manual for doing it, but you can definately take your 3DS game online through the Wii U.

You're after the package relay app from the Wii U eshop.

To answer the lock-to monster query you first need to allocate the command to your touch screen via the customise panel when you bring up your menu.

I have a dpad on the right of my touch screen which is a fairly reliable software solution to the lack of second stick.

Hello everyone - I have a question for those that have tried (or know about) the Wii U / 3DS link up stuff for this.

I know you can play your Wii U game on the 3ds, carry on, then transfer back and so on.
I also know that you can have someone join you on a quest with 3DS and Wii U linked. (right?)

Well, can I do BOTH these things? As in, if I wanted to have a character on my Wii U and then continue that on the 3DS, but also if I wanted the mrs to join me in a game can she have her own save slot on just the 3DS?

    Cheers in advance.

You need two sd cards for your 3ds with the game downloaded to both (or the gamecard).

Me and my fiance play together so I had initially written off trasferring my save to the 3ds as she was using that.

I needed to buy a bigger sd card for DKCR ad ended up redownloading everything to it. I since discovered we could transfer our games from WiiU to 3ds.

I haven't encountered any problems so far so I reckon it's legit.

Interesting. So other than swapping out an SD card, there's no undue faff involved?

So I just started the first guild quest (collect 3 mushrooms) but I cant see where they are on the map, or use the map I was given?

Also I tried the panel customisation thingy to get the target lock thing on the screen, can you only add panels where the existing four are because it looks on the tutorial bit like you can have four button along the top. how the hell am I supposed to get rid of my items, map, controls or health sections to replace them with a target lock thing?

There are gathering spots in each area...once you get to know them then similar stuff always appears there.
There are maps available online to indicate where all the gathering spots are if you don't want to seek them out for yourself.

You don't open it. Rather the full area will be mapped out on screen whilst you have it in your pouch.

@JiveHound Just a thought - have you ever tried putting the Wii U SD card into a 3DS? Wondering if I could just play my MH save game that way, or is that too simple to hope for?

If you use the gunlace, do you end up using a standard ammo, or is it somehow reloading something you are carrying. If the latter, how do you choose which ammo to use when you've got two types?
