What amazed me was how easy it is to distinguish between system just by listening to the sound effects and digitised music.

The Master System and Amiga especially.

It's funny, as realistic and as amazing as games are now, they had so much more charm back in the old days.

The only thing that bugged me about SWOS, and it was so tiny, was that the value of all your players apart from the ones who scored the goals went down too easily.

Can't believe there was no footage of Fever Pitch Soccer on the SNES in there.

Sensible World of Soccer is the most fun football game ever. The early Pro Evo's were great too.

I did love ISS Deluxe, for me, the first proper game where passing and moving was rewarded. Can't beat the arcade styles of Striker and SWOS though. I watched this on full screen on Tivo the other weekend, some very good memories :)

I haven't watched the video, but I seem to remember Manchester United Europe being reasonably good fun considering it was a Man U game.

Interesting to see the ball physics evolve. It also felt like the whole genre went back to square one when polygons got involved.
ISS still looks damn good, compare that to actual soccer and it looks laughable now.

Saying that I owned both and at the time my younger self was amazed.

Ivor Kolyvanov in SWOS is still the best 1m you could spend in any footie game.

ISS Pro was an almighty game though.

Retee 2! and Manchester Utd: The Double on the Amiga were also ace.

Tony Daley was a monster in MU:TD.

I lost a generation of games by never having owned an Amiga or Atari ST. :(

It's a great video, but it spends too long on each of the recent ones (ie it gets to 2004 about halfway through), and has some glaring omissions. No Sega Worldwide Soccer 97 on Saturn, which was quite impressive at the time. No Virtua Striker 2, which I wasted too much money on in arcades. No UEFA Striker, where you could score from every corner by bending it in. No Three Lions with its bizarre targetting system. No Adidas Power Soccer with the mental Predator shots.

And a complete absence of what is unquestionably the greatest football game of all time:

You know a surprisingly good football game that I spent a long time on:

Tengen World Cup Soccer on the Game Gear.

I used to just boot up BBC Micro Match Day and listen to the music, then reboot. Such a slow game if you actually try to play it.

I'd love a decent arcadey footie game that doesn't require 27 million button combinations and 30 hours of play before you're able to score.

The shop I worked at had 3 copies of this, I don't think we ever sold them.
