Well, apparently they're considering shortening mens' grand slam matches to 3 sets. So drugs might not even be needed!

Cycling draws a lot of the "doping cheats" attention (especially now) but that shouldn't mean you should be so naive and think all other sports are clean. I strongly doubt top international tennis is.

It's a shame you can't get personality enhancing drug cos they could give them to Murray to improve his personality.

Probably goes on in all sports - Only highlighted in athletics and cycling as they have actual anti-doping processes in place to try and catch the culprits. The more this is stepped up the more will be found.

Yes, but I'd rather not go too far and let cynicism infect my enjoyment of watching... well, pretty much every sport I enjoy watching. I'd like to keep my naievity for now.

Maybe I should try watching lawn bowls.

But seriously, I always thought the most important aspect of Tennis was racket skill and foot work, rather than endurance, so performance enhancing drugs can't give a shit Tennis player the kind of boost it gives a weak Cyclist.

Racket skill, footwork and increasingly over the last decades, power.
And to play the kind of power tennis that Nadal plays for several hours you're going to need some endurance. I think Chang proved that in '89. :-)

When you've got two players like Murray and Djoko, evenly matched skills wise and hard to see where any improvement will come from to get the edge, the one with endurance assistance drugs will win.

That looks like serious weight-lifting muscle. Surely that would just slow you down? If that is steroids well she took the wrong ones.

Edit: obligatory 'don't know how sports work' tag.

Im starting to feel a bit suspicious about the use of performance enhancing drugs in tennis.

There has been a few whispers about this recently in the press and insinuations that the doctors involved in the cycling scandal were also helping tennis players.

I guess Djokovic is the most glaring example. In his early twenties he was notorious for pulling out of big matches with various ailments, heat exhaustion etc.. Now he seems superhuman which I think he puts down to switching to a ‘gluten free diet’. Can this really make such a drastic change?

Some of the marathon grand slam finals we have seen recently – I mean Im just not sure if I can believe what Im seeing anymore. At least Murray has the decency to look knackered – Djokovic and Nadal seem to come from another planet.

    Opinions?
You're referring to the Fuentes trial going on in Madrid at the moment I'm assuming?

Drugs have been in tennis for years but in the main it's been mainly recreational drugs such as coke, amphetimines etc. They were pretty rampent in the 70's and 80's with players such as Borg, Wilander rumoured to have been users. These drugs won't really give players the sorts of benefits you can get from the serious stuff such as testosterone, blood transfusions etc. There have been a handful of cases of more serious PED's such as steriods, especially nandrolone with a few south american players getting caught (mainly Argentina).

Nadal has always been linked to the Spanish doping Fuentes but it's never been more than rumours. The court case going on at the moment will probably not release any sports stars names linked outside of cycling and they have already mentioned he has worked with others such as tennis, football etc. Some big Spanish football teams have been linked.

I've been following the Fuentes case since he was originally busted back in 2006 (Operation Puerto) when his lab was raided. They found all sorts of PED's, over 200 blood bags, EPO, Growth Hormones etc. Files linking cyclists and other sports stars. The court case going on now is based on the 2006 raid.

My guy feeling is perhaps some of the tennis players linked were previous Spanish names such as Barasetegi, Serg Brugara etc. Nadal is the obvious one some suspect but I'm not sure.

Football is way more corrupt and I suspect epo and blood doping is a much bigger problem in football, more money involved and dodgy FA chiefs. Slightly less in tennis, the odd case etc. It's not that sort of sport.

Spain has had a long history of turning a blind eye to drugs in sport, and one of the worst in Europe. It wasn't even illegal to use EPO until the 2006 Operation Puerto raid. Why do you think Lance Armstrong based himself there for training (Girona). In France they'd throw you in jail, as what happen to the British cyclist David Millar.

Spain is massively corrupt so I wouldn't be suprised if the Government put a lot of pressure on the courts not to name the sports stars involved outside of the cyclists.

Tennis isn't perfect and doesn't do much blood doping, but it does have a pretty strict whereabouts system. Fed and Murray have been very critical of the testing procedures of late and have asked for them to be more stringent. I also don't suspect Djokovic one bit.

Training rides are usually around 60-80 miles, and competed in all the big Sportive events in the UK and done the biggest one in Europe last year (Marmotte) in the French Alps. 4 major mountain passes and can take anything from 7 hrs to 14. I did it last year in 10hrs 20. Aiming for a gold time this year, hopefully under 9 hrs. Then in 2014 I'm doing a simiar one in Italy called the Maratona.

Events are 100 miles minimum and very hilly.
